3 . The term ‘dark tourism’ is far newer than the practice, which long predates Pompeii’s emergence as a dark ________. Dr Philip Stone, perhaps the world’s leading academic expert on dark tourism, considers the Roman Coliseum to be one of the first dark tourist sites, where people travelled long distances to watch death as sport. Later, until the late 18th century, the appeal was ________ still in central London, where people paid money to sit in grandstands to watch mass hangings. Dealers would sell pies at the ________, which was roughly where Marble Arch stands today.

It was only in 1996 that ‘dark tourism’ entered the scholarly vocabulary when two academics in Glasgow ________ it while looking at sites associated with the murder of John F. Kennedy. Those who study dark tourism identify plenty of ________ for the growing phenomenon, including raised awareness of it as a(n) ________ thing. Access to sites has also improved with the arrival of cheap ________ travel. It’s hard to imagine that the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum would now welcome more than two million visitors a year were it not for its ________ to Krakow’s international airport. Peter Hohenhaus, a widely travelled dark tourist based in Vienna, also ________ the broader rise in off-the-beaten track tourism, beyond the territory of popular guidebooks and TripAdvisor rankings. “A lot of people don’t want mainstream tourism and that often means engaging with places that have a more ________ history than, say, a Roman ruin,” he says. “You go to Sarajevo (萨拉热窝) and most people remember the war being in the news so it feels closer to one’s own life story.”

Auschwitz-Birkenau Marble Arch

Hohenhaus is also a fan of ‘beauty in ________’, the contemporary cultural movement in which urban ruins have become subject matter for expensive coffee-table books and a thousand Instagram accounts. The crossover (交叉风格) with death is clear. “I’ve always been drawn to ________ things, “the 54-year-old says. Nevertheless, like any tourism, dark tourism at its best is educational, the example of Grenfell Tower (many “tourists” flooded to a London tower block, destroyed by a fire in 2017 with 71 deaths) hints at the ________ felt at some sites. “I remember the Lonely Planet Bluelist book had a chapter about dark tourism a while ago and one of the ________ was ‘pay due respect’,” Hohenhaus says. “It’s big, it’s dramatic, it’s black and it’s a story you’ve followed in the news. I’ll be interested to see Grenfell Tower up close. I can see the attraction. But I would not stand in the street taking a selfie ________.”

Micro-tourism

Although the pandemic has prevented people from traveling far, there is a silver lining to that dark cloud: micro-tourism or mini-vacations,     1    has gained popularity in recent years.

Micro-tourism refers to short-distance travel in which people drive two or three hours to a nearby destination and spend two or three days. In contrast to a proper vacation, which usually involves careful plan, much long travel time, higher expenses and lasts over a week or more, micro-vacation needs little planning and time and is     2     (cheap) than long distance vacation.

Micro-tourism began catching on seven or eight years ago, but it has been increasingly popular since the COVID- 19 pandemic.     3    the pandemic prevention and control measures making long and distant trips less convenient, more and more Chinese people choose to take short trips instead, especially     4    who live in large and medium-sized cities, usually on weekends for relaxation.

Among many micro-tourism forms, the development of the camping market is particularly noticeable. The camping equipment     5     (sell)well on the Internet and in the physical stores. The number of urban youths and young families who see camping as a new way of socializing     6     (increase) significantly in the last two years.

China, where there are about 45,000 camping-related companies, definitely has a great market potential of micro-tourism. To fully realize its potential, more government guidance is needed on     7    we can improve industry standard, safety management, environmental protection, emergency rescue services and anti-pandemic measures. For example, in the camping sector, we     8     improve planning and construction, strengthen management and provide better service support     9     (make) sure the sector develops sustainably.

10    these problems are properly solved, micro-tourism will not only drive the recovery of the tourism industry in the short term, but also help diversify the tourism industry and promote the high-quality development in the long run.

Jiading--Centuries of History, Decades of Change

A book entitled “Jiading–Centuries of History, Decades of Change” by American writer Kate Baker has recently been published in Shanghai. New book launch was held last week at the Old China Hand Style, a major    1    of a series of walking guide books called “Beyond the Concession: Six Walks in Shanghai’s Other Districts.” And Baker’s “Jiading” runs the fourth among the six.

From a foreign point of view, the book has    2    the history of Jiading District back between the year Tang Dynasty(618-907) and the Song Dynasty(960-1279), when Jiading had been “a leading economic and intellectual influence in the region long before Shanghai became a major trading port,” as Bakeris     3    in her book.

Baker first landed in Shanghai in 2011 with her husband, an engineer with Ford, who was sent to work in Shanghai to prepare for the    4    of the Lincoln brand in China. “I and my husband have been traveling around the world in the past 20 years,” Baker said at a(n)    5    with Shanghai Daily. “Wherever I go, I would jump into the local history and culture quickly and deeply.”

Having taken a 15-month online course of Chinese with Harvard’s “ChinaX”, Baker started    6    out on her own. An occasional excursion into the north west of Shanghai, she “discovered” and fell in love with Jiading. Since then, she has visited Jiading    7    , bringing family, friends, and tour groups. At the end of 2013, the Jiading Tourism Bureau officially invited Baker to write a book on Jiading.

With up-to-date facts, useful information and    8    pictures, Baker’s “Jiading” is a well researched guide about interesting areas less than one hour from Shanghai. There are chapters on celebrating the seasonal and agricultural festivals that are unique to the region; stories of    9    figures living in Jiading; changes to the Nanxiang Old Town; tours to numerous gardens, museums and temples; and the development of outdoor recreational activities in Jiading’s Anting Town, such as the F1 car racing, horse riding and golf.

With good public    10    and enough green space, Baker sees Jiading a high growth district of Shanghai, which offers a quality of lifestyle and tourism. “I see a better-planned and forward-thinking of the district government. And I sincerely thank the people of Jiading who welcomed me to their community and trusted me with their narrative,” Baker says.

Skywell

A skywell, or “tian jin”, as it is commonly called, is a typical feature of a traditional home in southern and eastern China. Skywells were designed to reduce temperature in buildings well before air-conditioning existed. When wind blows above a skywell house, it can enter the indoor space through the opening. Because outdoor air is often cooler than indoor air, the incoming wind travels down the walls to the lower stories and creates    1    by replacing warmer indoor air, which rises and leaves through the opening.

The main purpose of a skywell is to allow in light, improve ventilation (通风) and harvest rainwater. In Huizhou, a skywell is small but tall, and the rooms around it    2    out sunlight on hot days, enabling the bottom of the skywell to stay cool. Meanwhile, hot air inside the house can rise and escape through the opening above the skywell.

Architects are now looking towards the    3    behind skywells while designing new buildings to save energy. One example is the National Heavy Vehicle Engineering Technology Research Centre in the eastern Chinese city of Jinan. The 18-storey glass-walled tower block has a giant inner skywell in the middle, which    4    from the fifth to the top floor. The elevators, toilets and meeting rooms are all situated around this channel, which helps improve the lighting and ventilation and    5    the overall energy consumption.

Ancient “green wisdom” such as skywells continue to inspire today’s climate adaptive design and innovations in methods that depend on design and technology to    6    a building without the use of power.

However, there are some    7    for bringing skywells into modern designs. The mechanisms of courtyards facilitating natural lighting, ventilation and rain collection are well known, but applying these methods needs to be    8    . Because traditional skywells had different shapes, sizes and features, which were    9    dependent on their natural surroundings, adding skywells into modern buildings requires designers to be    10    to their project’s context and situation, making it difficult to apply them as a universal solution.

As a(n) ________ space between indoor life and the outdoor environment, a skywell acts as an effective heat buffer(缓冲)to shield residents from the hot air outside. But the largest part of skywell's cooling effect actually comes when there are bodies of water in the enclosure.

Evaporated water cools hot air, a process known as evaporative cooling which is ________ in Huizhou skywells. In the past, Huizhou families collected rainwater in their skywells because they believed this could safeguard and boost their wealth. Skywells therefore have channels around them to ________ rainwater coming from the roofs.

Though existing in China for hundreds of years, in recent times they have often been forgotten by people who prefer modern________. Over the past two decades, however, due to a ________ of traditional Chinese architecture, skywell buildings have been making a comeback.
