Sometimes the best form of escapism from the strange times we live in is to immerse yourself in other people’s weirdness. And Louis Theroux is undoubtedly the master of, gently and politely, uncovering the strange obsessions and beliefs that other people have. America is a breeding ground of opportunity for him: the series LA Stories, Dark States and Altered States are all set in the USA(as well as some episodes in other series)and our hero casts his quizzical, courteous eye over LA’s dog world.(Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends is available on Netflix)

Yan’an is known to most people     1     an old, important revolutionary base, but this mountainous city in Northwest China’s Shaanxi has other things to offer than its     2     (rich) in revolutionary history and spirits-the sweet and juicy Luochuan apples that so far     3     (gain) fame and are sold to some 20 countries and regions worldwide.

Luochuan is a county of Yan’an,     4     has become a model again in the nation’s latest strategy toward rural revitalization (振兴). Arriving in early August, the Global Times reporter saw numerous colored bags     5     (hang) on short trees in fields alongside the village roads. But the reporter also noticed     6     strange thing—there were white fishnet-like objects attached to poles in the trees.

Exploring Florence on Foot

Travelling on foot, as opposed to a bicycle or bus (most of the center is closed off to cars),     3     a pace that opens your eyes to various hidden treasures that you would not have seen otherwise. I always love learning about a city and seeing the sights by walking from one place to the next (when they are in a reasonable distance) while making short detours down     4     streets that catch my attention.

I like to get started early when walking in the city center because it is clear of tourist crowds, AND it is much cooler AND the morning light is stunning (great for photos)!
