1 . Facebook Is a Big Waster

During the first decade of the 21st century, a popular and new word has come into our vocabulary—Facebook. This is the most popular social networking website on the Internet.     1     You can send messages to your friend’s electronic wall, put up a status saying something like “Going to the mall, I need to get a new pair of shoes” or “it’s finally the weekend!”.

In spite of the benefit it does on common people, it is true that this social network is a big waster. There are about 350 million active users on this website and 67% of them are between the ages of 13-25. More than 35 million users update their status every day.     2    

The highest age group who use Facebook are teenagers. Most of them keep the website running whenever they are using the computer, if they aren’t in school or when they aren’t asleep. Facebook is just changing the new generation of youngsters unconsciously. The teenage life is one of the most important stages of life.     3     It is a distraction to their mind as well.

Facebook is also where people can see the gossip among their friends, virtual arguments, relationship status and updates, who is in whose “top friends”, you can become a fan of anything, join groups, post pictures and videos, play childish games, invite friends to parties or events and a lot more. Generally, all these would just disturb people into living life to the fullest. It’s not just teens who become addicted, even grown-ups do. An average person spends about 55 minutes on Facebook.     4     Technology might be taking over people’s life.

    5     This would make them think how life is like without saying what’s on their mind to all their friends on the Internet. A break would also make them more active, like socializing in person. This would finally help them focus better in school or in work. Although about 80% of people who take a break would come back to Facebook within days.

Today I went to a conference,     1     two students had a debate about the strengths and weaknesses of the Internet.

The first speaker talked about the positive     2     (affect) of the Internet on our lives. The first is its value for people who     3     (look) for information now. For example, with the touch of a button or the click of a mouse, a student will find enough information     4     his or her command. The second is our ability     5     (relate) to others through the Internet and it is especially important for disabled people     6     can’t leave their homes. The     7     (two) speaker talked about the negative effects of the Internet on our lives. For example, some experts think that the outcome of spending too much time on the Internet has difficulty in     8     (form) social bonds. They were also quite explicit (明确的) about how heavy Internet users spend     9     (much) time with their Internet friends than their real-life friends from school and work.

Both sides presented lots of statistics to support their arguments. My own judgment is that though the Internet is beneficial, we should use our     10    (intelligent) and not be a slave to it!

Nowadays, the Internet has influenced on our daily life far much significantly than any other technologies. However, whether the individual and social problems its causes outweigh the benefits remained a hot topic. I agree with the view which despite the harmful aspects, we cannot just avoid enter the brand new world. It is obviously that the online lifestyle has made our life definitely convenient. With a click of mouse, we can easily place a order in the online shop and wait for the deliver with ease. Therefore, more and more people, no matter what ages, tend rely on the Internet.

With the development of modern technology, people can stay     1     (connect) with their families and friends easily, however far apart they are from each other. WeChat is one of the most     2     (frequent) used means of communication in China. It is reported that the number of the WeChat users     3     (reach) over 1.1 billion so far.

Once joining the WeChat, people can find more and more people start to add them     4     friends. They don’t have to consider time     5     (zone) when communicating. Another reason why it is so popular is that it costs nothing. It’s also very convenient for people to immediately update     6     they are doing by WeChat.

However, addiction to WeChat will rob people of the time that should otherwise     7     (spend) on something more important. And the many so-called friends on it are not really friends at all, who simply want     8     (put) ads or sell items on Moments. Besides, people on the WeChat are more likely to compare     9     (they) with others, which will make them feel bad when finding some people seem to be     10     (success).

There is no doubt that cell phones play a important part in our daily life. However, be addicted to cell phones does a lot of harms to the users. First, staring at a cell phone screen for hours can lead to dry eyes or other eye diseases. Second, if you always overuse your cellphone, your head as well as your neck ache, which will have a bad effect to your daily life. Beside, on your way home or to school, with your attention fully focus on the cell phone, you may fail to notice the traffic around you, which will be a great danger to you. Therefore, I strong suggest that everyone would use our cell phone wisely.

6 . There’s a new AI bot: ChatGPT, and you’d better pay attention, even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence. The tool is an AI chat bot system that OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve.

ChatGPT remembers the thread of your dialogue, using previous questions and answers to inform its next responses. It derives its answers from huge volumes of information on the Internet. ChatGPT is built on top of the OpenAI GPT-3 family of large language models and is fine-tuned (a method of transfer learning) using both supervised and reinforcement learning (监督和强化学习).

You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative. A few days after its launch, more than I million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS analyst Lloyd Walmsley estimated in February 2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in January, accomplishing in 2 months what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two and a half years.

ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research phase. But when too many people hop onto the server, it overloads and can’t process your request. It just means you should try visiting the site at a later time when fewer people are trying to access it. If you want to skip the wait and have reliable access, there is an option for you. As of Feb. 1, 2023, OpenAI has aChatGPT pro plan, ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to have general access even during peak times. This service does come at a cost of $20/month.

However, ChatGPT can not replace Google. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence robot that provides solutions to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge due to its programming but Google has unlimited knowledge which is updated every day.
