1 . As a child I was one of the 125 people at our family gathering for New Year. These days we were a much smaller group in Belle Valley, Ohio. I insisted (坚持要求的) on acting as hostess and wanted to bring back the joy I’d felt at my childhood New Year that filled with love.

As family members arrived at the hall, I handed each one of them a numbered card and said, “Time for the alphabet game.” “What kind of game is that?” one of my great-grandchildren asked. “well,” I said, “who’s got number one?” A cousin raised her hand. “Tell us something you never forget,” I said. “Something that begins with the letter A.” My cousin smiled. “Apple pie!” she said. Great-granddaughter Mindy was next. “B,” she said. “I am impressed by Buckeye Country.” “Cookies!” Number 3 shouted.

Until Number 17, “The next one’s a challenge,” I said. “Who’s got 17?” Ryan, my son, slowly raised his hand. “Q,” he said. “Quaker City Carnival (嘉年华).” The room went silent.

“It’s one of the oldest traditions in Ohio,” Ryan said. “Grandma and Grandpa met there. That’s where they fell in love. That’s where this whole thing started. This whole family.” Ryan looked around the room, making eye contact with everyone. “We wouldn’t be here celebrating New Year together if it wasn’t for Quaker City Carnival.”

The room burst into laughter and was full of the love that had kept us connected to our Ohio traditions. “This is the best New Year we’ve ever had,” a great-grandson said to me secretly. Whatever their New Year would look like when they grew up, they’d remember this one. And for me, I had an unforgettable New Year to treasure   — a memory where love started with the letter Q.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。人们对一些过去的事件记忆犹新,这些记忆被称之为“闪光灯记忆”,文章陈述了影响“闪光灯记忆”的因素。

3 . It is very common for people to have very vivid memories of certain events.     1     , such as a graduation ceremony or the birth of a child. Or they may be things that they see or hear about in the news.     2    . Psychologists refer to them as flashbulb (闪光灯) memories.

As the name suggests, flashbulb memories are like “snapshots (快闪) ”of important moments that we take with our brains rather than a camera.     3    , either at the scene or on television. Take the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States as an example. Many people claim that they remember the disaster exactly even after 20 years.

According to psychologists, there are several factors that affect these types of memories. Among the most significant are the emotions a person may be feeling at the time, especially if it’s shocking.     4    . Receiving a very special and unexpected birthday gift, for instance, would have special significance for an individual but would be meaningless to others.

5     As time passes, people’s version of events can change. This may result from a number of influences, such as their other life experiences or being exposed to media coverage of an event. So, keep in mind that those clear memories that you have of an event may not be entirely accurate.

A.Flashbulb memories influence our life in many ways
B.They typically happen when we are watching something
C.These events may be things that happened to them personally
D.And the inspiring ones have greater chances to be remembered
E.There is also personal connection that a person may feel toward an event
F.Whatever the case may be, these memories stick out in our minds very clearly
G.However, studies have shown that flashbulb memories are often not as clear as people think.

I used to live in a small town with green trees all around it. The river, run through the town, had clean water in that fish could be seen swimming in groups. The houses, however, was small and simple, and the street wasn’t wide enough to run cars. People worked hard all the year round but still live a poor life.

Now great changes have been taken place there. You can see tall buildings, department store and factories everywhere. Cars and buses are running in broad streets. But as the development of industry, pollution is becoming more and more seriously. A lot of trees are gone, and fish have disappeared because the dirty water. 5 . We live in a technological society where most goods are mass-produced by unskilled labor. Because of this, most people think that craft(手艺) no longer exists.
One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to 100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability(持久性). “Homes in those days were well-built,” ____say. No doubt these homes were well-built, but what these people have done is mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.
Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, more people can no longer afford solid oak stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes. Nor can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter(木匠) to build the stairway. Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairways. And not only would these carpenters know how to build them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old.
One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools. Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precision cuts(精确切割)on the wood. Also, it is not uncommon any more to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a solid knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs.
The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty years ago, but only if given proper material.
1. Compared to the carpenters in the past, modern carpenters are__________.
A.more learnedB.more successful
C.more imaginativeD.more hardworking
2. What does the underlined word “they” (paragraph2) refer to?________
A.Carpenters who are fond of oak stairways.
B.Carpenters who have college degrees.
C.people who think that modern material is of low quality.
D.people who think highly of carpenters of old
3. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss? ________
A.People in the past preferred to use oak to build stairways.
B.It is now expensive to employ a carpenter.
C.Good carpenters still exist in modern times.
D.Modern houses last as long as the old one.
4. What would be the best title for the text? ________
A.Craft, Back to Life.
B.Is Craft Dead.
C.History of Craftsmanship
D.Carpenters Today and Yesterday
