I came out just like I went in, feet first and belly down. My legs were spread out like a bean-shooter stalk. Arms flailing the air, I     1     (快速钻出来)and up. I seemed to hang suspended in air at the peak of my climb. I could see the hard-packed ground far below. As I started down, I shut my eyes tight and     2     (咬紧牙关). This didn’t seem to help. With     3     (劈里啪啦声), I landed. I felt the air     4     (呼呼吹)between my teeth. I tried to scream, but had no wind left to make a sound. After bouncing a couple of times, I finally settled down to earth. I lay spread-eagled for a few seconds, and then slowly got to my knees.

One pup started my way. I held my breath. On he came until I felt a     5     (刺痒的小脚) on mine. The other pup followed. A warm puppy tongue    6    (抚摩)my sore foot. I     7    （跪下)and gathered them in my arms. I buried my face between their    8    (扭动着的身体)and cried. Rising with the two pups held close to my chest, I asked if I owed anything.

Between sobs, I heard the     9     (愉快的尖叫声)from my sisters as they fondled my pups.

I heard the     10     (绳子扯断的吧嗒声) and the rattle of paper. The oh’s and ah’s from my sisters were     11     (太好听了).

Mama     12     (飞奔出来) with my sisters right behind her. Papa was out by the bam harnessing his team. Mama yelled something to him about a snake. He dropped the harness,     13     (一跃跨过) the rail fence, and in a long lope started for me. Mama reached me first. She grabbed me and shouted, “where did it bite you?”

Mama just     14    (呻吟) way down deep and covered her face with her hands. Some big     15     (泪水涌出来) between her fingers. Almost in a whisper, I heard her say, “Thank God; I thought you were snake-bitten.”

One night a hotel caught a fire, and people in it ran out in their night clothes.

Two men stood o    2     and looked at the fire.

“You don’t know my work,” said the other.

“What is your work?”

“I’m a policeman.”

He says to them that his brush is only good for painting real life and he needs no colors. When Mills Godwin High School’s 11th grader Laasya Konidala isn’t studying, you’ll usually find her baking in the kitchen or doing a puzzle with her mother. For her, family is everything. But recently, her family received terrible news.

This past year her grandmother was diagnosed (诊断) with breast cancer. But she didn’t sit back and worry, she     1     (祈祷) for her grandmother and went to work.

“As someone who has a lot of natural curiosity and as a researcher, one of the first things I did was to d    2     into reading articles and papers as much as I can,” Konidala said.

Teaching herself to code (编码), she entered the MEDARVA Science Fair, presenting research that bridges the gap between predicting breast cancer sub-types with good classification models. And she won! It’s research that could help to     3     (发现) and treat breast cancer. As you can imagine, her grandmother is very proud.

“She knew I was into     4     (science) research, but she never expected me to do something directly related to her. She was at a loss for words,” she said.

Her mother, Rekha Rasineni is not. She tells you what a hard worker Laasya can be.

“Some days we tell her ‘You don’t need to be     5     (produce) and working all day. Take it easy.’ But she doesn’t like that. She likes to study and do puzzles and bake and maybe even save lives with her research.”

It was the final sprint (冲刺) of the Santa BarbaraXV Grand Prix cyclo-cross race in Spain. Fans lined the road to the finishing line, cheering on the     1    (运动员).

Ismael Esteban, in third place, was just ahead of another cyclist, Agustin Navarro, with only 300 metres to the finishing line. The two cyclists reached the finishing line with Esteban ahead by foot, Navarro just behind him. Navarro had let Esteban finish in third place, while he came fourth. The audience really     7    (钦佩) Navarro for his show of sportsmanship and cheered the cyclists. Navarro said,“I didn’t want to win that way.” Later, Esteban,who won the bronze m    8    tried to give it to Navarro. Mary has a daughter who has already been married and who lives in a city 300 kilometers away from her. Last month Mary received a call from her daughter asking her to move to live together. I used to be a lazy student who often fell asleep in class. Worse still, I associated with bad friends. As a result, I was     1    (落后的) in my studies.
