There was once a troubled family. The parents spoiled their children. The son, John, loved to play video games all day long when summer vacation was around and he did not like to study. The daughter, Emily, on the other hand, loved studying without play. To her, video games were for foolish people who were unable to achieve anything useful. Life went on with parents complaining and not changing anything.
One day two new neighbors arrived in their neighborhood. One lived on the right side of John’s house while the other lived on the left side of John’s house. These two people were twins. They did not communicate with anyone other than themselves. John and his family felt uncomfortable living right between them. Strange sounds came from their houses every midnight until the afternoon. People heard and saw thunder and lightning coming from the house. After a couple of weeks of lightning flashing, machines roaring, this disturbed every household. Everyone could not help but wonder what their new neighbors were doing. It was whispered that they were inventing a time machine in secret.
People were beginning to dislike them. Every moment they heard these noises, they felt like something was going to explode soon. To deal with this problem John and Emily’s parents walked to both houses to speak with the owners. But on each door hung a sign that said, “DO NOT DISTURB!” They tried knocking the door and no one responded or came out from the house. The machine noise kept going but once in a while it did stop for a small break before it continued. They tried nearly every day to get the attention of their new neighbors. But in the end they gave up. They decided to send their kids to get their attention instead. So they made a plan and the kids successfully entered the neighbor’s houses.

Walter worked for a food store. He carried food to the homes that ordered it on the telephone. He wore the same clothes every day. He walked in a strange way. When we saw him coming down the street with the food, we would stop playing our games and follow him down the street, trying to walk as he did.
Walter did not bring food to our house. Mother was afraid of him. She went to a different store and brought the food home herself. When Grandmother came to live with us, things changed.
Grandmother liked all sorts of people. During her life, she had made friends with men who drank too much. women who ate too much, and people who were just very lonely.
Grandmother liked people for what they were. If she knew a man who drank too much, she would not tell him to stop drinking. She would tell him how to drink and still be a gentleman. The important thing to Grandmother was that things were done well in the right way and with control.
When Grandmother learned about Walter, she told my mother she wanted Walter to bring food to our house. Mother, of course, was strongly against it. But in vain.
The first time Walter came to our house, they became very close. He told Grandmother he wanted a real friend but did not know how to make friends. Grandmother seemed pleased, and she began to read books to Walter, a little from a book each time he came. The first book was called How to Dress When You Go out With a Friend. The next one was about the problems of early friendship and how to become better friends. Walter seemed to enjoy the readings. At least he listened.
Grandmother almost finished reading one day when Walter stopped her.
“Mrs. Gorman, I have a real friend,” he said. “I like her very much.”
“How wonderful!” Grandmother answered. “I hope you brush your hair and wear a coat when you see her. And you must promise me that you will always be a gentleman.”

In gift shops, it is likely that many tourists would pass by what may be a symbol of Portugal: swallows made of glass. In Portugal, people gift the birds for weddings, anniversaries, housewarmings and going-away gatherings.
Farewells were on my mind when I met Apolinario in February 2020. At the time I was well aware of my oldest child’s upcoming graduation and departure for university in a city far from home.
Ethan, my oldest child, has been away from me before. There have been camps and school trips, but each time I have rested easy in the knowledge that he would come home. He always comes home.
But this time I feel less certain.
The feeling was at its peak when I entered Apolinario’s gift shop that specialized in Portuguese souvenirs. I was aimlessly walking among the shelves when I noticed the abundance of glass swallows.
“The swallow is connected to a lot of things that are dear to us,’’ explained Apolinario who stood behind me. The birds’ qualities —they mate for life and raise their babies together—make it a nostalgic (怀旧的) symbol. “They don’t leave the nest until all of the babies do and they always return.”
Apolinario also told me that the swallow also marked an important time in the country’s history when the Portuguese sailed around the world. A lot of people missed their homeland and wanted to come back. The swallow represented that there was a nest somewhere in Portugal, although people were living all over the world.
“The concept is best described as the feeling of connection you get when you taste your grandmother’s cooking or a familiar smell that takes you back to your childhood. The swallow is thought to be the embodiment (体现) of that feeling. When you have one in or on your home, it carries those good memories with it,” he added. “When you’re giving this as a gift, you’re basically giving a part of yourself that stays there. You’re creating a connection.”

The wilderness was green and large, and it was a dangerous place. The temperature could reach nearly 0°C at night, and there were wolves and bears in the forests. So when 4-year-old Karina Chikitova went missing from her remote village, Olom, and after nine days no one had found her, everyone was worried.
Karina had run after her parents that morning, who had set out for another village where there had been working for many years. The family depended on their wages, so after a week's rest at home, they had to go back to work. Afraid of her parents’ scolding, she did not dare to follow them too closely, with the result that her parents did not notice that their little daughter was following them. Her grandmother thought Karina was with her father; her father thought Karina was with her grandmother!
In fact, after following her parents for more than one hour, Karina failed to see them no longer. She wandered aimlessly kilometres into the wilderness. Fortunately, Karina had left Olom with her dog, Naida, so Karina didn’t panic. Instead of going into the centre of the forest, she walked along the river. However, she had no idea how to get home, When night fell, she curled up with Naida for warmth though there were a lot of wet mud on his paws(爪子).
The villages in the wilderness didn’t have the Internet and they often didn't have phones, so it was four days before Karina's family and the villagers realized Karina and Naida were missing. They started searching for them everywhere. Helicopters were even used in the emergency rescue. But a small girl and her dog in that landscape were hard to find. Five more days passed. Little Karina was terrified by now, but at least Naida was with her to keep her warm in the cold nights. One day, though, she woke up and found that Naida wasn't there. Karina couldn’t believe that her dog had left her alone.

Carter Druse was born in Virginia. He loved his parents, his home and the south. But he loved his country, too. And in 1861, when the US was divided by a terrible war, Carter Druse, a southerner, decided to join the army of the north.
He told his father about his decision one morning at breakfast. The old man looked at his only son for a moment, too shocked to speak. Then he said, “Please don’t tell your mother about your decision. She is sick, and we both know she has only a few weeks to live. ”
Carter’s father paused, again looking deep into his son’s eyes. “Carter, ” he said, “No matter what happens, be sure that you always do what you think is your duty. ”
Both Carter Druse and his father left the table that morning with broken hearts. And Carter soon left his home and everyone he deeply loved behind.
One sunny afternoon, a few months later, Carter Druse was sent to guard a road which was only a few miles from an enemy’s base. It began in a forest, down in the valley, and climbed up the side of a huge rock. Anyone standing on the top of this high rock would be able to see down into the valley.
Hidden in the valley’s forest were thousands of Carter’s fellow soldiers. They had marched for thirty-six hours. Now they were resting.
Their plan was to attack by surprise their enemy on the other side of the valley. But if their enemy learned about the army hiding in the forest, the soldiers would find themselves in a trap with no escape. That was why Carter Druse had been sent to guard the road and it was his duty to be sure that no enemy soldier spied on the valley, where the army of the north was hiding.

10 . When I was in primary school, I was actually a little shy. One thing that really frightened me was speaking in front of many people, whether strangers or acquaintances (熟人). It was my sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Bamick, who helped me get past that. That year we had to make four oral (口头的) book reports in front of the class. Some of the kids were even glad to do it, but I was scared to death. Mr. Bamick recognized my fear, so be told me to do a report on a book that was about something that really interested me. So I did the first report on baseball.
When it came time for me to present it to the class, Mr. Bamick cut me some slack and let me read the report rather than give it from memory. Some of my classmates laughed at me, but Mr. Bamick defended (为……辩解) me. By the end of the year I had completed all four of the oral book reports. It wasn’t easy or comfortable for me, but I did it.
Years later I realized that Mr. Bamick did me a great favor in sixth grade. One of the chances I got when I won a tennis tournament (锦标赛) was to make comments to the fans who attended the match. Some of those were carried live on television and all of them were before thousands of people. It was still not one of my favorite things to do, but, with Mr. Bamick’s help, I got through it from time to time. Before long, I was asked to bring my favorite childhood teacher to a national event in Dallas. 1 was excited when Mr. Bamick joined me for the event. It meant a lot to me that he was there.
Mr. Bamick believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. It was he who helped me build the person I became.
