In a house far from the city lived John and his mother. John’s only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breathtaking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school. Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died. Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John, really didn’t want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “The profession of artist can’t aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say. But as each day passed, John’s dream: became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury. John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice. He never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in — the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away. He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next four days.” He worked up the courage hoping to ask his mother if she could give him some more money so that he could participate in the competition, but finally, considering the family’s financial difficulties, he swallowed the words.

When 16-year-old Colin Moore is out on the football field, he is putting his heart into the game and looks just like any other teenage athlete out there. But what makes him different than the rest, is that he’s playing without part of his arm.
Moore was born without the lower part of his right arm, but he’s never let that stop him from achieving anything he’s put his mind to in his life, including football. “I’ve always had to have a mind of steel, heart of gold, and just move forward no matter what.” Moore said.
Although his arm difference has never got in the way of anything, it’s been a challenge for him. But in everything he does, he’s worked twice as hard as everyone else to make sure he would succeed. Moore’s goal is to be a starting center, which requires a lot of body strength. Even though he is missing an arm, he makes up for it with his fast movements and strength, making him the perfect choice for this position.
Moore looks up to the Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, and aims to be just like him one day. Moore’s hard work even got him noticed by his hero. After seeing a video of Moore playing football, Kelce sent him one back. Kelce told Moore that his perseverance is a great encouragement to him. He even invited Moore to join him and the Eagles at their training camp so they could meet him.
Moore’s coach Frank Holmes agrees with Kelce and compliments Moore’s perseverance. “The thing I can say about Colin is this: he was born with a challenging situation, but every day he has a positive attitude and focuses fully on whatever he does. He trains hard.”

5 . Most people who ran the marathon last month spent days before resting up and days after recovering. But not Jacky Hunt-Broersma. In total, she ran 104 marathons in 104 days. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢).
“Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. “I thought it would be a great way to inspire others to push their limits because I truly believe that we’re stronger than what we think. And I’ve been so pleasantly surprised that my body is held up, everything is held up and I’ve made it to 104.”
She actually did not pick up the sport until after she lost the lower part of her left leg in 2001 to a type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade (刀锋式跑步义肢). Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.
All together, Hunt-Broersma ran over 4, 385 kilometers. During that time she has had a lot of time to think and has learned a few things about herself. “It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing ... This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.”

6 . A 13-year-old California boy has set out for Nepal to realize his dream of becoming the youngest person to climb Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. Jordan Romero aims to reach the summits (顶峰) of the highest peaks on all seven continents. The idea came to the teenager in 2005 when he was 9 and saw a school poster of the seven summits.
“I just want to show kids can also challenge themselves by doing something impossible, and more importantly the experience will shape me into a stronger man without worrying about the unknown future, Romero said in a post on a website named after him.
Romero, a native of Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino County, stopped to visit friends near Los Angeles on Monday before boarding a flight bound for Hong Kong. He and his team members are expected to arrive in Asia on Tuesday. They will continue toward Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and from there set off for the Nepalese-Chinese border where the Himalayas are located.
Mainly with the assistance and support of his parents, Romero already has climbed five of the mountains on his list, including Alaska’s Mount McKinley. Besides, with the aid of his team members who had worked out a detailed plan, he became the youngest climber of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 5, 895 meters, at the age of 10.
After climbing Everest, which kills considerable climbers almost every year, Romero is to head to Antarctica this winter in an attempt to conquer Mount Vinson and complete his seven-summit project by the end of the year. But, his friends are all thinking that there is no need for him to do something irrelevant to school work.
Guides who have experience with Everest say Romero probably will be safe, as long as his team pay close attention to how his body is reacting to low-oxygen conditions near the peak. The current record holder for the youngest to climb Everest is Temba Tsheri of Nepal who was 16 and lost five fingers during his 2001 ascent (登高) due to frostbite (冻伤).

10 . I became bald (秃头的) at two due to a condition. At school I was bullied (欺凌) for it. Sports became my escape, and I was fortunate to have born athletic ability. I would race home every day and shoot basketball for hours. I put all my time and energy into basketball to become the best player I could be.
I had a great high-school career, breaking countless school records, and received a scholarship to play in college. It was a dream come true. However, I still rarely talked about my condition. I continued to wear my wig (假发) all the time, no matter the weather or what I was doing.
In my senior year of college, I wanted to run the marathon. During that 26.2-mile run, I felt strong, truly like Superwoman. I will never forget the feeling of crossing the finish line, and the way everyone celebrated me. I began running marathons all over the country. I loved the feeling I got from running and training. I looked forward to my runs in the morning when the rest of the world was still sleeping. This was my chance to reflect, dream big, and enjoy the sound of my feet on the pavement. The more I ran, the stronger and more confident I felt. I slowly started to talk about my condition to close friends.
Then one day, on a hot training run, I threw off my wig while tears welled up in my eyes. For the first time, I felt strong, beautiful, and brave. Getting home that day, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw someone kind, caring and full of joy. Two weeks later, I ran my first marathon wigless and was celebrated and loved during that entire race weekend. I was surrounded by such positivity and support that I didn’t even think of my wigless head. Tears welled in my eyes as I crossed that finish line in San Diego.
