“Isn’t it strange? Melanie is dancing so well without any formal training!” the mother said.

“We must give her ballet lessons to help her improve her skills,” her father said.

The following day, Melanie’s parents took her to a local dance training school. The teacher asked Melanie to dance. The little girl was happy and showed some of her favorite dance steps. However, the teacher didn’t seem interested in her performance.

“That’s OK. You can leave now!”the teacher said.

Melanie was shocked to hear this. So were her parents. They couldn’t believe their ears.

“The girl is common. She does not have the possibility to become a ballerina, ”the dance teacher said. “Don’t let her waste her time dreaming of becoming a dancer.”

Disappointed, Melanie and her parents returned home. Tears rolled down Melanie’s face. Her dreams were broken within a matter of minutes. Without confidence, Melanie never attempted to dance again. She completed her studies and went on to become a teacher in school.Life was good and she kept herself busy with family and work. However, whenever she happened to pass the school’s ballet room, memories of childhood dreams danced before her eyes.

When Dylan was just seven years old, he moved to the United States with his mother, Khadine, and his twin younger brothers. The family hoped that their new home would allow them to start over and find success. However, their dream didn’t work out exactly as they imagined it would.

Life as a single mother supporting three kids is incredibly difficult, but Khadine had a particularly difficult time after her twin sons had been diagnosed with serious heart conditions. As a result, the boys suffered from dangerous symptoms and required 24-hour care. As Khadine had to work three jobs to support her family financially, it became Dylan’s responsibility to look after his young brothers. To relieve Mom’s stress, Dylan also found a part-time job at a recreation center.

While Dylan never considered his family to be a burden to him, seeing his mother and brothers become vulnerable (脆弱的) made him determined to plan his future out correctly. He believed education was the only way out of their struggle, so he made a promise to his mother that he would be the first one in the family to go to college.

For that promise, Dylan made use of each and every minute to study while taking care of his brothers. He soon became an honor student at Henry High School and took several advanced classes to keep his grades up. The College of New Jersey was his top choice. He was determined to put that admission letter in his mother’s hands.

However, weeks before Dylan’s college entrance exam, both his family and his determination were tested again when Khadine fell ill and was unable to work for a while. Soon, the bills became unmanageable and the landlord evicted (驱逐) Dylan’s family after Khadine couldn’t pay the rent. The family had no choice but to live in the shelter. The place wasn’t an ideal place to study. It was often noisy and crowded, and the lights would go out at a certain time after 11 p.m.

In her eyes, Normal meant dancing, so Sally did it in her wheelchair right alongside her nondisabled high school dance team. “Half of my body was taken away from me, and I have to move it with my hands,” Sally said. “It definitely took a lot of learning and patience.”

After graduation, Sally expanded her dance network to include women who had the same situation as her. She met people online who had suffered various spinal cord injuries (脊髓损伤), and invited them to dance with her by sharing her determination. “It was such an amazing experience.” Hoping to reach more people in a larger city, Sally moved to Los Angeles in 2016 and formed a team of dancers with disabilities called DREAM. “I want to show that dance is dance, whether you’re walking or you’re rolling.”

In Sally’s dancing team, there was a girl Ella aged 12, who had been feeling depressed since the terrible accident. Having known about the girl’s situation, Sally made efforts to seek every chance to help the little girl find back the confidence to live. Thanks to Sally’s continuous efforts, the little girl recovered physically and mentally day by day. The other day, an invitation to a national dancing competition arrived. After a heated discussion, they reached an agreement that they would recommend Ella to the competition on behalf of the team.

Become What You Want to Be

On September 7th, 1960, in Rome, Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win 3 gold medals in the Olympics. She won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and ran the anchor (最后一棒) on the 400-meter relay team. The achievement led her to become one of the most famous athletes of all time.

Wilma was born into a large family and she was the 20th of 22 children! Her parents were honest, hardworking, but were very poor. Wilma was born prematurely (早产地) and weighed only 4. 5 pounds. They couldn’t afford to take her to hospital, so Wilma’s mother spent the next several years nursing Wilma through one illness after another. When she was four, her mother found that her left leg and foot were becoming weak and not normal. Mrs. Rudolph was told she had polio (小儿麻痹症), a disease that had no cure. The doctor told Mrs. Rudolph that Wilma would never walk. But Mrs. Rudolph wouldn’t give up. She found out that she could be treated at Meharry Hospital. Though it was 50 miles away, Wilma’s mother took her twice a week for two years, until she was able to walk with the help of a metal leg brace. All of her brothers and sisters helped, too. They did everything to encourage her to be strong and work hard at getting well. Finally, by age 12, she could walk normally. It was then that she decided to become an athlete.

At age 13, she entered a race. She came in last. She entered every race in high school, and in every race she came in last. Everyone begged her to give up! However, one day, she came in next to last. And then there came a day when she won a race.

As a journalist, I have had the chance to meet some remarkable people in different fields, but no one has impressed me more than Austin Riley.

Austin Riley is a race car driver. He has been attracting crowds to the race track for years. But his claim to fame isn’t just being fast on the speedway. He is overcoming difficulties on the track for those with disabilities. Riley has autism (自闭症). Simple tasks like tying his shoes are extremely complicated for him, but when put in a race car—a complex, delicate piece of machine —he will take you by surprise.

I first met Riley and his father Jason in 2014, in Uxbridge, Ontario, at the local go-cart track. I still remember how excited Riley was to have me and my cameraman there filming his every move. He was a go-cart racer then. He could barely talk to me, let alone look at me. No matter how quiet and shy he was, I knew this kid was going to be something big.

The go-cart track is where Riley’s racing career began. His dad, Jason, just wanted to give him something to focus his energy on. Riley has always loved cars. He has been crazy about them since he was a very young child. He also loves speed. The minute he hit the gas, his mind began to move fast and everything felt in sync(同步).

Riley’s journey on the track soon took him from fast go-carts to really fast cars. He became the first person with autism in Canada to get his race car licence. It opened up the track for Riley to drive in the big leagues — the Radical Motorsports circuit. Riley is now racing across North America, putting him on the podium(领奖台) almost every time.

Jean felt a rush of the old enthusiasm (激情), and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream. But thinking of the questioning and ridicule (嘲讽) she had suffered before, she tore up (撕碎) the piece of paper full of “her Dream”. Jean finally wrote in his exercise book, “Sorry, teacher, I have nothing to do because I have no dream.”

The next day, after class, Mrs. Slaton stopped Jean and said, “Gene, come to my office.” She looked gently at Jean, “Jean, can you tell me why you say you don’t have a dream?” Gene said depressedly, “No one wants to believe that I can be a pilot. I have a dream. If I have the conditions you mentioned, I just want to try my best to be a female pilot.”

The next thing that Mrs. Slaton said changed the course of Jean’s life. The teacher leaned forward over her desk and said, “I have a little secret for you. You do have unlimited abilities and talents. When you leave school, if you don’t go for your dreams, no one will do it for you.”

When I moved to Dallas in the fourth grade, I noticed I was behind in my reading at Saint Michael’s School. Reading out loud, I had difficulty with half the sentences.

I was nervous every time she called on me to read aloud because, although I would try my hardest, she would always have to help me with the words. One morning, I went to hospital with my parents and met Dr. Waites. Before long, I began to take the test. The test made me feel uncomfortable, and I was frightened to answer the questions related to the test, in fear of facing failure. When the test ended, Dr. Waites said the test results showed that I had dyslexia, I was shocked and felt upset. Dr.Waites comforted (安慰) me, saying that his hospital had many other kids who had dyslexia. Then, he smiled and suggested ways to get over dyslexia.

According to him, I should often read books and understand what was read. And I should try to read aloud, and build a vocabulary of recognized and understood words. Besides, I should often do physical exercise. And he suggested I receive speech therapy (治疗) in his hospital every few days. As for my parents, Dr. Waites suggested they spare time to read aloud with me.

After returning home, I searched information on the Internet and further leaned about dyslexia. I found it was not easy for a person to get over dyslexia. I had little confidence that I could succeed in removing my dyslexia, and I was worried and frightened about my future. Noticing it, my parents tried to encourage me.
