The most wonderful thing that has come into my life is a Golden Retriever called Bonny. Bonny has been trained by an organization called Assistance Dogs for Independence, so she could help me become independent. I often rely on other people in my life, and it even keeps me from making my own decisions in most situations. Why? Because when you have to depend on others, the decision does not become totally yours.

I developed Cerebral Palsy(脑瘫) at the age of twelve months as a result of food poisoning(中毒). That made me physically disabled, making me totally rely on others. Because of that, I often felt sad. I considered myself to be useless and was often in a low mood.

My recent visit to the Spastic Centre with Bonny caused the therapists(治疗师) to notice the change in my attitude and mood. They always tried to help me become positive, but they said it was Bonny that had made such a difference. They were so impressed that they invited me to talk to Assistance Dogs for Independence about such dogs because they were sure that other people like me would also need the assistance of such a dog.

I totally agreed with them and decided to do that. The costs of carers who are paid to help people like me are very high. And family members have to spend a lot of time taking care of such people as me. With such a dog as Bonny, things could be much easier.

However, I will still need the carers’ help in areas where a dog can’t help. I just want to say such a dog is really helpful to such people as me.

1. Why can’t the author make his own decisions sometimes? (no more than 10 words)

____________________________________________________________

2. How did the author develop Cerebral Palsy? (no more than 10 words)

3. What does the underlined word “assistance” in Paragraph 3 mean? (1 word)

5. What do you think of such dogs as Bonny after reading the text? Why? (no more than 20 words)

3 . Pre-school children who spend time together take on one another's personalities, a new research has found. The study shows that environment plays a key role in shaping people's personalities. While genetics still forms the central part of the human psyche (心理), the research finds that personality traits (特征) are "contagious" (传染的) among children. "Our finding flies in the face of common assumptions that personality can't be changed," said Dr. Jennifer Neal, co-author of the study.

The researchers studied the personalities and social networks of two pre-school classes for a full school year. One of the classes was a set of three-year-olds, and the other a set of four-year-olds. Children whose friends were hard-working or outgoing gradually took on these personality traits over time. Psychology expert Dr. Emily Dublin said kids are having a far bigger effect on each other than people may realize.

The new study is not the first to explore the contagious effects of personality traits. A 2015 psychology study found that rudeness at work can be contagious as it travels from person to person "like a disease". The study found that seeing a boss being rude to an employee was enough to cause people to be rude to those around them.

The researchers questioned 6,000 people on the social "climate" in their workplaces, which included offices, hotels and restaurants. They found 75 percent of those who took part said they had been treated rudely at least once in the past year. And the study also suggests that merely seeing other people being subjected to rudeness made it more likely that a person would treat their colleagues in the same way. Rudeness could include leaving someone off an invite to a company event, sending unkind emails, finding fault with others or failing to give praise.

Dr. Torkelson believes companies need to be more aware of the harm that rudeness in the workplace can do as it can damage the working environment. She said better training could help to fight against the problem.

1. What does the underlined part "flies in the face of" in Paragraph1mean?
A.Leads to.B.Results from.

3. Which of the following is considered rude at the workplace?
A.Ignoring the faults of co-workers.
B.Not sending emails to workmates.
C.Seeking praise from colleagues and bosses.
D.Not inviting a colleague to a company party.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.One's personality is hard to change.
B.One's personality is shaped by genes.
C.One's personality traits can spread to others.
D.One's personality traits can change overnight.
5. This passage is most probably taken from ________.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了野火正变得越来越频繁、危害越来越大。

4 . A wildfire in New Mexico, a state in the southwestern US, has burned for nearly two months, consuming more than 315, 000 acres of land--an area about the size of the city of Los Angeles.

“With climate change, it seems like the dominoes are beginning to fall,” NASA hydrologist JT Reager told the BBC. “We get warmer temperatures, we get less rain and snow. The reservoirs(水库) start drying up, then in a place like the West of the US, we get wildfires.”

In recent years, wildfires have wreaked havoc across countries including the US and Australia.

These fires destroy homes and businesses, claim lives and also negatively impact the environment. As climate change worsens, global temperatures increase and so does the risk of wildfires. A recent report from the United Nations Environment Programme and GRID—Arendal, a partner organization in Norway, reveals that wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe.

This is harmful to people around the globe. According to the joint UN report, it is estimated that the yearly “economic burden from wildfire for the United States is between $7. 1 billion and $347. 8 billion”.

Another article published in Nature journal on April 19 found that wildfires have created seasonal pollution patterns in the northwestern US. Between 2002 and 2018, carbon monoxide( 一氧化碳) levels increased every year for the month of August in the area.

In 2019 and 2020, Australian bushfires displaced millions, filled the air with deadly clouds of smoke and killed thousands of koalas.

Forest fires are common in China too. In the recent decade, the total number of forest fires in the country every year has increased to more than 2, 000 cases, according to The Paper.

Greater Hinggan Mountains( 大兴安岭) is one of the important forestry bases in China. The National Forestry and Grassland Administration adopted mountain watchtowers, forest cameras and aerial drones(无人机) to prevent forest fires in the summer.

1. The author quotes Reager’s words in the second paragraph to ________.
A.show the seriousness of the recent wildfire in the US
B.list some environmental problems caused by wildfires
C.explain how climate change contributes to wildfires
D.provide possible solutions to wildfires around the globe
2. What does the underlined phrase “wreaked havoc” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Created pollution.B.Been out of control.
C.Caused great damage.D.Drawn much attention.
3. How has wildfire affected the American Northwest according to the text?
A.Millions of people have been displaced.
B.It has caused seasonal patterns of pollution.
C.It has led to around $7. 1 billion economic loss annually.
D.Carbon monoxide levels have increased year on year.
4. What do we know about forest fires in China?
A.There has been over 2,000 cases in the last decade.
B.Greater Hinggan Mountains experienced the largest one.
C.They were not very common several decades ago.
D.Measures have been taken to prevent them from happening.

文章大意:本文是新闻报道。文章主要介绍韦布望远镜首次拍到系外行星HIP 65426b图像的事情。

6 . Telescope Searching for Space Treasure Unearths Giant Planet

A giant planet shrouded(遮盖)in clouds, in orbit(轨道)around a star 385 light years from our sun, has been captured by the James Webb Space Telescope in images described as a “_________ moment for astronomy.”

In observations led by a British astronomer, the pioneering telescope focused on a “gas giant” planet called HIP65426b. It captured images in infrared light(红外光), which allows astronomers to more _________ calculate the mass and temperature of “exoplanets”—the _________ for planets in orbit around other stars. It should ultimately allow them to detect clouds moving across their surface, _________ alien weather patterns on worlds hundreds of light years from our solar system. The images show the planet as “blobs(斑点) of light” in blue, purple, yellow and   red hues under various infrared wavelengths.

The planet is up to 12 times bigger than Jupiter and orbits about 100 times farther from its host star compared with the Earth’s distance from the sun, making it _________ for astronomers to separate the planet from its star when attempting to capture images of it. The planet is only 15 to 20 million years old, a fraction of the _________ of the Earth, which is 4.5 billion years old. Like Jupiter and Saturn, it has “no rocky surface and could not be _________,” NASA said.

The _________ of an exoplanet is usually detected when the light from a distant star appears to become less _________ at regular intervals, suggesting that a planet is passing across its face once per orbit like a tiny partial eclipse(日偏食). It is extremely difficult to capture a direct image of an exoplanet __________ they are thousands of times fainter than the stars they orbit.

James Webb used an instrument called a coronagraph to __________ light from HiP65426b’ s host star, which lies in the Centaurus constellation(半人马座), “Obtaining this image felt like __________ space treasure,” said Aarynn Carter, a researcher at the University of California. “At first, all I could see was light from the star, but with careful image processing, I was able to remove that light and uncover the planet.”

Analysis suggests that the planet has a red hue and a temperature of 1,300℃. The images could give a clue as to how Jupiter and Saturn looked in their __________ more than four billion years ago.

NASA said, “Webb’s view, at longer infrared wavelengths, shows new details that ground—based telescopes would not be able to detect __________ the intrinsic(本身的)infrared glow of Earth’s atmosphere.”

The telescope has already been used to analyze the __________ make—up of the atmosphere on another exoplanet, WASP—39b, detecting carbon dioxide by analyzing the spectrum(光谱) of light passing through its clouds.
