1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。续写词数应为150词左右。

Jack and his wife Tonya were sailing around Africa with their friends Max and Sasha. One day they saw a big fishing boat. It was moving fast. “Hello!” they shouted. The men on the boat looked at them angrily. Max looked carefully at the boat.

“Something’s wrong with their fishing net, “he said. They got nearer to the net. “What’s that?” said Tonya.   “There is something in the net. It’ alive.” Very slowly they moved nearer.

“I can see it now,” said Tonya. “It’s a killer whale- it’s hurt. There’s blood in the water. How can we help it? “I can see it too. It’s a baby but we must be careful,” said Max.

Jack jumped into the water.” “ I can get the net off its fin,” he said.

Jack got the net off the baby killer whale. There was a big cut on its fin. It swam away. Suddenly there were other killer whales near the boat.

“Jack! “ Tonya shouted.

“Get in quickly.” Jack swam to the boat as fast as a fish.

“I’m going to call that baby killer whale Lucky,” he said.

As they moved away, it began to rain harder and harder.

Jack said. “We must get away from the wind. I can see a town over there. Let’s go.”

The town got nearer but the waves got bigger. Suddenly a very big wave hit the boat.

“Is everyone OK?” shouted Jack. “Tonya?... She’s not in the boat,” said Sasha. “She’s in the water.”

They looked into the cold, dark water for hours. “Tonya! Say something, Tonya. Where are you?” shouted Max.

The wind got stronger and the boat was full of water. Another big wave hit the boat. “Jack, do you want us all to die?” said Max. “We can’t do any more. Tonya is wearing a lifejacket and she can swim very well. Let’s sail to the town.”

Moments later the boat hit a beach. They went out. Max and Sasha slept on the beach. Jack sat near the water, looking at the sea and thinking about Tonya.

Paragraph 1

At that time, Tonya was five hundred meters away out in the sea.

2 . Most people can't wait for spring to arrive. It means flowers and warmer weather, all welcome changes from the dark winter days. Now we know that spring is arriving sooner in the Northern Hemisphere   (北半球)than it was in the past, thanks to a study published in Scientific Reports.

For example, Los Angeles may experience spring only a day earlier than it did 10 years ago, but further north, in Seattle or Chicago, spring will arrive four days earlier. If you lived in the Arctic, spring could arrive 16 days earlier than it used to.

To determine how springtime is starting earlier, researchers looked at temperature records and 743 earlier studies over 86 years. These studies were about various biological indicators of spring, including birds migrating, plants flowering and amphibians(两栖动物)sounding their mating calls. Researchers then studied these data to see if they were occurring earlier. The result showed that not only is spring making itself known sooner but it's warmer, too.

Before you go out in a happy springtime hike, spring arriving sooner isn't so good. The livelihood of migratory birds, for instance, may be concerned.

“The food that birds rely on when they move to the north might not be reliable if the beginning of spring at these higher latitudes(维度)is expanded by future warming." said Eric Post. He is a fellow of the John Muir Institute and a polar ecologist.

Animals relying on Arctic sea ice, like polar bears, probably aren't crazy about things warming up sooner, either, because it impacts on their ability to hunt. Spring's early arrival could cause disorder in the delicate balance of various ecosystems~~not to mention how soon you'll need to buy allergy medicine.

1. We learn from the study published in Scientific Reports that.
A.spring comes earliest in Los Angeles
B.Los Angeles is further north than Seattle
C.spring comes 12 days earlier in Arctic than in Chicago
D.the further north a place lies, the sooner spring comes than before
2. Researchers made the discovery mainly by.
A.comparing related data available
B.conducting research and test
C.calculating the exact length of each spring
D.observing animal's behavior all year round
3. What do the last two paragraphs focus on?
A.Concerns over spring's early arrival.
B.Springtime emergence of creatures.
C.Early springtime's impacts on humans.
D.Disorder in the balance of ecosystems.
4. In which section of a magazine can we read this text?
A.Medical Report.B.Survival Stories.
C.Scientific Discoveries.D.Natural environment

3 . Last year, the bushfires in Australia burned more than 12.35 million acres of land. At least 25 people were killed and 2000 homes destroyed. According to the BBC, that was the most casualties(伤亡) from wildfires in the country since 2009. The University of Sydney estimates that 480 million animals have died in South Wales alone.

Zeke Hausfather, an energy systems analyst and climate researcher at Berkeley Earth, said warmer temperatures and extreme weather made Australia more susceptible to fires and increased the length of the fire season. "The drier conditions combined with record high temperatures in 2019 created main conditions for the disastrous fires. Australia's fires were worsened by the combination of those two. 2019 was the perfect storm for being the warmest year on record for Australia and the driest year on record for Australia," Hausfather added on Friday.

Kevin Trenberth, a senior scientist at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, said warmer ocean temperatures are also contributed to more variable weather around the world. Trenberth believes that global warming contributed to energy imbalances and hot spots in the oceans, which can create a wave in the atmosphere that locks weather patterns in places, causing longer rain events in Indonesia, for example, and at the same time contributing to drought in Australia. He said that once an area experiences drought conditions for two months or more, it increases the risk of fires catching and spreading. Those changing weather patterns due to global warming make drought events longer.

Climate experts stress that climate change is not the only factor in the severity(严重) of wildfires. How land is managed can also impact the amount of fuel available for fires. Practices like controlled bums and other factors can impact the risk to people and property, such as warning systems and the type of development in a given area. Changing those policies has great potential to limit future damage from wildfires along with changes to how fire management resources are dispatched(派遣).

1. What are the numbers about in paragraph 1?
A.The causes of Australian fires.B.The results of Australian fires.
C.The damaged areas of Australian fires.D.The property destruction of Australian fires.
2. Which of the following best explains ''susceptible to" in the second paragraph?
A.Very quickly to adapt to.
B.Very seriously to focus on.
C.Very likely to be influenced by.
D.Very easily to be protected against.
3. What can we infer from Trenberth’s research?
A.Longer dry weather contributes to global warming.
B.Global wanning is also a main cause of the bushfires.
C.Warmer ocean temperatures leads to the fires directly.
D.The imbalanced energy leads to the temperature rising.
4. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A.To stress the effects of Australia fires.
B.To show the methods for land management.
C.To predict the seriousness of Australia fires.
D.To provide some advice about reducing fire damage.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150 左右。

A. J. shut the door of the truck. “Ready,” he said. His dad started the truck. It was six o'clock and freezing, but the strong morning sun promised warmer temperatures. It had been colder than normal over the past week, and the ground and ponds were already frozen.

“After we check on the cows,” Dad said, “you should have some time to practice roping cattle.” A. J. wanted to enter the rodeos (牛仔竞技表演) in which cowboys rode wild horses, and caught cattle with ropes.

The best professionals could break from the gate on horseback, rope a calf (小牛), and hog-tie (捆绑) the calf (牛犊) in less than ten seconds. So far, A.J. needed nearly a minute and a half, but he’d only been at it for a few months.

The truck bounced down the dirt road. In a few minutes, they passed through the field gate.

A. J. pulled a pair of telescopes (望远镜). The black spots of cows on the far hill took shape. The cows gathered around the pond. A. J. guessed they wanted the water locked under the ice. Suddenly, they heard extremely frightened shouts from one cow. Dad stopped the truck, and he and A. J. stared at the frozen pond anxiously.

A calf lay on the ice in the middle of the pond. A cow, no doubt the calf’s mother, stood onshore, shouting desperately. The calf struggled to get up but slipped and fell each time.

The morning sun seemed warmer. Too warmer. A. J. knew that the situation was urgent. If the calf lay there too long, she could fall through the ice and drown. Dad eased the truck down the hill and stopped at the edge of the pond. “No telling how long she’s been there,” he said. “The ice could be about to melt. I don’t think we can risk it.” Dad shook his head, “It’s just not safe.”

注意:1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 开头已给出。
Paragraph 1:

A. J. watched the calf, whose eyes were wide with fear.

7 . Rainforests are home to a rich variety of medicinal plants, food, birds and animals. Can you believe that a single bush(灌木丛)in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the whole of Britain! About 480 varieties of trees may be found in just one hectare of rainforest.

Rainforests are the lungs of the planet-storing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and producing a significant amount of the world's oxygen. Rainforests have their own perfect system for ensuring their own survival; the tall trees make a canopy(树冠层)of branches and leaves which protect themselves, smaller plants, and the forest animals from heavy rain, intense dry heat from the sun and strong winds.

Amazingly, the trees grow in such a way that their leaves and branches, although close together, never actually touch those of another tree. Scientists think this is the plants' way to prevent the spread of any tree diseases and make life more difficult for leaf-eating insects like caterpillars. To survive in the forest, animals must climb, jump or fly across the gaps. The ground floor of the forest is not all tangled leaves and bushes, like in films, but is actually fairly clear. It is where dead leaves turn into food for the trees and other forest life.

They are not called rainforests for nothing! Rainforests can generate 75%of their own rain. At least 80 inches of rain a year is normal-and in some areas there may be as much as 430 inches of rain annually. This is real rain-your umbrella may protect you in a shower, but it won't keep you dry if there is a full rainstorm. In just two hours, streams can rise ten to twenty feet. The humidity(湿气)of large rainforests contributes to the formation of rainclouds that may travel to other countries in need of rain.

1. What can we learn about rainforests from the first paragraph?
A.They produce oxygen.B.They cover a vast area.
C.They are well managed.D.They are rich in wildlife.
2. Which of the following contributes most to the survival of rainforests?
A.Heavy rainsB.Big trees.
C.Small plants.D.Forest animals.
3. Why do the leaves and branches of different trees avoid touching each other?
A.For more sunlight.B.For more growing space.
C.For self-protection.D.For the detection of insects.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Life-Giving RainforestsB.The Law of the Jungle
C.Animals in the AmazonD.Weather in Rainforests

8 . Save the Animals

Animals are natural resources(资源) that people have wasted all through our history.

Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers(羽毛), for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.

Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.

Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance (平衡) of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.

For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰), the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied(繁殖) quickly.

Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.

Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid(禁止) the killing of any animal or plant on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

1. Animals are important to us mainly because ______.
A.they are beautiful and lovely
B.they keep the balance of nature
C.they give us a lot of pleasure
D.they give us a source of food
2. What has happened to the animals on the earth? ______
A.Thousands of kinds of animals are gone forever.
B.A few kinds of animals have died out.
C.All kinds of animals are in danger.
D.About 170 kinds of animals have disappeared forever.
3. Why do people kill animals? ______
A.They kill animals to raise some money.
B.Animals destroy their natural resources.
C.Animals create many problems.
D.They kill animals for something they need.
4. What can we conclude from the fact that quite a few countries have passed laws protecting animals in danger? ______
A.Animals in danger will not be killed any more.
B.The number of some animals in danger will increase.
C.Every person will know the importance of protecting wild animals.
D.Animals in danger will be kept away from people.

9 . Where do hurricane names come from? Why do we give human names to violent, mindless masses of water and wind? And how do we all agree which name to use?

Before the 1940s, only the worst storms were given names.     1    There was the Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893, the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900 and the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 to name a few.

The practice of using more memorable names didn't begin until 1950. It was when Atlantic tropical hurricanes received official names, although they still weren't human ones.     2     So the 1950 season featured such strangely named storms as Hurricane Dog, Hurricane Easy and Hurricane Love.

3     The same list of names was recycled every year, so the 1950-1952 seasons each featured a Hurricane Able through at least Hurricane Fox. That became confusing, so in 1953 the U.S. National Hurricane Center began using female human names, which proved far more successful. Not only did it make storm identification easier, but it helped authorities and news outlets spread warnings.     4

The first hurricane names were often inspired by forecasters' wives, but in 1979 men's names were added to the mix The World Meteorological Organization now monitors the master list of names, which alternates between male and females six lists are rotated annually in the Atlantic.so the 2015 names will be used again in 2021.     5     Seventy-eight Atlantic hurricane names have been retired since 1954, including 29 since 2000.

A.Besides, it helped the public pay attention to them.
B.These names were chosen from some familiar words.
C.This naming rule, however, had an obvious weakness.
D.These names of retired hurricanes are silly or unreasonable.
E.But when a hurricane is bad enough, its name can be retired.
F.They were usually based on the place or time of year they made landfall.
G.It is also easier to use names when we have more than one storm to track.
