文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了亚马逊的重要作用以及面临森林滥伐的问题。

5 . The rainforest of the Amazon region of Brazil in South America covers five percent of the world’s land.    1    The area is also the home of 220,000 people from about 180 tribes (部落) who live deep in the forest. The rainforest itself is an important environment but, because of its size and location, it also plays a key part in controlling the world’s climate.

However, large areas of the Amazon rainforest have been cut down to make more land for farmers.    2    This is as six football field being opened up every minute. Much of the destruction, which leaves the land dry and dusty, is against the law.

3    Some people use most of the new land to grow soya, which they export to other parts of the world to be used as animal food. Millions of chickens in Western European countries are fed in South American soya beans. Increasingly, some soya beans also begin to be turned into food for humans, because many vegetarian foods are based on soya beans. Other people clear the rainforest to use the land for their cows, to sell the valuable hardwood from trees, or to find more oil.    4    But they are at the expense of the future of the global environment.

Deforestation (滥伐森林) destroys ancient forest and changes the world’s climate.    5    They are dependent on the rainforest for everything they need, from food and tools to medicines and shelter.

A.Why do people cut down forests?
B.There are a number of ways to do this.
C.These activities help make more money.
D.Besides, it also affects the life of local people.
E.It is home to at least 30 percent of the world’s animals and plants.
F.How will the Amazon rainforest react to the future climate change?
G.In the last few years, 70,000 square kilometers have been destroyed.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了身为生态学家和传统治疗师的作者的双重角色,他既研究南非商人和传统治疗师利用野生生物的文化价值和可持续性,也与自然保护主义者合作保护野生生物。

6 . I’m an ecologist studying the cultural value and sustainability of wildlife use by traders and traditional healers in South Africa. I am also a traditional healer myself and work with conservationists to protect wildlife.

In southern Africa, traditional healers use plant and animal materials, known as umuthi (means medicine), that might come from endangered species such as lions and pangolins (穿山甲). This can create tension between umuthi traders and conservation professionals. I think a lot about the balance to be struck between cultural identity, healing traditions and the urgent need for wildlife preservation. I meet with traditional healers and umuthi traders in markets in Johannesburg. Behind me, dried umuthi lines the walls in glass jars and my hands are arranged to form one of the greetings of a traditional healer.

Being a healer as well as a PhD candidate at the University of Cape Town brings me unique insights/opinions. Often, conservation objectives clash with deeply rooted cultural practices. I try to bridge those two fields and build trust between healers, tribal authorities, traders and conservationists — a challenging endeavour in the light of historical research practices.

Practices that bring these groups together, such as ones that promote home-grown medicinal plants, have had promising outcomes. I talk to communities about our conservation laws and how they could be changed to allow sustainable harvesting of natural products. I want to make communities become administrators of their environment. After all, if plants and animals go extinct, then that threatens the lives of traders and healers alike.

My double role as a healer and researcher creates its own complexities (复杂性). Yet, I remain optimistic that harmonious coexistence is achievable. My purpose is to enlarge the voices of traditional healers, respect their wisdom, and preserve the balance between culture and conservation for generations to come.

1. What can we know about umuthi?
A.It must be very expensive.B.It can cure many kinds of diseases.
C.It’s made from several materials.D.It’s been accepted by conservation professionals.
2. What does the underlined word “clash” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Conflict.B.Combine.C.Compete.D.Challenge.
3. How does the author help different parties solve problems?
A.By combining different groups together.B.By suggesting growing medical plants.
C.By advising government to make laws.D.By making healers help traders.
4. What does the author think of his work as a double role?
A.Easy.B.Convenient.C.Encouraging.D.Worthwhile.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了摄影师乔尔·萨托雷为了保护濒危动物,在世界各地旅行,尽可能多地拍摄他能找到的动物,这让人们专注于每只动物的美丽和独特性。

7 . How much do you love animals? Maybe not as much as photographer Joel Sartore. He is traveling the world to take pictures of as many animals as he can find, which allows people to focus on the beauty and uniqueness of each animal.

Sartore is working to take photos of all 20,000 different types of animals living in the world’s zoos, aquariums (水族馆) and wildlife shelters. And he’s already taken nearly 15,000! He hopes his photos will raise awareness of these planet’s most endangered creatures, and that he can document them before they’re gone. “My job is to tell their stories and hope that the world cares in time,” he told The Weather Channel in 2022.

Sartore calls his project the Photo Ark, like the story of Noah’s Ark, in which a large boat is built to save every type of animal in the world from a flood. He founded the Photo Ark in 2006 in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska.

He doesn’t just take his animal photos in the usual zoo environment, however — he puts each animal on a black or white background with studio lights. This helps him photograph their true colors, and lets people see a little mouse as clearly as a big elephant — and look each animal right in the eye. “When people connect to animals through eye contact, we’ve got a real chance at changing human behavior,” Sartore says.

The response has indeed been huge. Sartore has more than 1.6 million followers online and a best-selling series of Photo Ark books. He asks people to buy his books and photos, give money to the Photo Ark, and support zoos, aquariums and wildlife shelters near where they live.

1. According to the text, Sartore needs to take another ______ photos for his project.
A.5,000B.10,000C.15,000D.20,000

A.To make a living in this way.B.To help save animals in danger.
C.To meet his own interest in animals.D.To offer another way to learn about animals.
3. What can we know about Sartore’s photos of the animals?
A.Some are black and white.B.They are about animals in danger.
C.They were taken in the natural habitat.D.Some were taken in designed environment.
4. What is people’s attitude towards Sartore’s project?
A.Unclear.B.Doubtful.C.Supportive.D.Disappointed.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In a misty morning, Robert was hiking high in the mountains with Lucky, his tiny but energetic dog. Every weekend, the two would go together on a hiking to climb nearby mountains. As they got near to the top, the path was rocky and less-traveled. After an hour, they reached the top, touched by the beautiful view there. Lost in the breathtaking scenery, Robert felt refreshed. When he looked at the loyal friend beside him, the memory of meeting Lucky for the first time flooded into his mind.

It had been about two years since Robert got Lucky. She was small and a ball of energy. “The day when my mother let me choose a dog from the doghouse, she was playfully jumping around and licking (舔) me, barking (犬吠) loudly to show how much she wanted to be my family,” thought Robert. “She looked quite small, but from the moment I threw my eyes on her, I knew she was the perfect dog for me. And, for some reasons, that active energy was something that I needed in my life,” Robert kept thinking.

Time flew, dark night drawing near. Having got enough rest, Robert decided it was time to go home. Suddenly, Robert lost his balance, rolled down a rocky hill, hit his head really hard, and finally stopped upside down.

One of his leg was in between two rocks, so he couldn’t move. But that was the least of his worries. What Robert was really scared of was that he was going to sleep with a serious head injury. He tried to cry for help, but he was so weak that he was going to become unconscious (昏迷的). “If only there had been someone else,” Robert thought, sad and hopeless. As darkness fell further, the weather turned cold and windy and he was about to lose consciousness. What’s worse, Robert noticed something like a snake approaching him before he finally fell unconscious.

9 . Since the 1950s, some 9.2 billion tonnes of plastic have been produced globally, of which only about 10% has ever been recycled. Yet environmentally conscious companies and consumers continue to look to recycling as a way to ease the plastic problem. Manufacturing giants claim to be committed to making more of their products and packaging from recycled materials. However, this confidence masks (掩饰) a complex web of issues around plastic recycling. Recycling rates remain extremely low and critics argue that we should look at alternative ways to tackle plastic pollution.

While many plastics have the potential to be recycled, most are not because the process is costly, complicated and the resulting product of a lower quality than the original. Despite rising demand for recycled plastic, few waste companies turn a profit. Part of this is because virgin plastic-linked to oil prices - is often cheaper than recycled plastic, meaning there is little economic incentive to use it. Worse yet, much of our plastic waste is difficult to recycle. Lightweight food packaging, like a mozzarella packet, contains different plastics, dyes and toxic additives (添加剂). This dirty mix means plastic recycled through mechanical methods- the most common form- can only be melted down and moulded (浇铸,塑造) again a couple of times before it becomes too fragile to be reused. And the nature of the process means plastic recycling has a carbon footprint of its own.

Given all of these difficulties, environmental critics say recycling is not the solution-and argue that creating more products from recycled material to attract environmental consciousness merely worsens the problem. “The solution is to use less plastic and to stop misleading the public about the recyclability,” says Enck, president of Beyond Plastics, a US campaign group with a mission to end single-use plastic. “They should stop making false claims about the recyclability of plastics since they know most will either be littered (乱扔) or burned or landfilled (填埋). Using less plastics means shifting to reusable products and relying more on paper, cardboard, glass and metal- -all of which should be made from recycled content.”

1. What is an environmentally conscious customer’s attitude towards recycling plastics?
A.Suspicious.B.Favorable.C.Indifferent.D.Disapproving.
2. What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.motive.B.issue.C.crisis.D.policy.
3. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The recycling process of plastics.B.Pollutants contained in recycled plastics.
C.Reasons why users dislike recycled plastics.D.Contributing factors to low plastic recycling rates.
4. What will the environmental critics be happy to see according to the text?
A.Using metal or glass food containers.B.Littering recycled plastics in a landfill.
C.Processing plastics in a mechanical way.D.Launching campaigns to promote recyclability.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲述作者在桑布鲁国家保护区给大象Rommel戴上跟踪仪的经历。

10 . I was mostly based in Samburu National Reserve, recording details of the population and leading collar (颈圈) operations. We put trackers (跟踪仪) around wild elephants’necks, so we can learn about their activities.

In May 2009, in the middle of the wet season, Rommel appeared again. And it was histurn to be placed a collar. We sent three cars out to search for him. There’s a river running through the park where many elephants gather in the mornings. At 10:30 am, one of my partners clocked Rommel.

A tranquillizer (镇静剂) was carefully shot into his body so we could safely place a collaron him, but for a bull of Rommel’s size it could take longer. After that, he turned away, heading in an unexpected direction and seemed to be near danger by killing himself in thewater. It would be a bad accident. Only by pulling his trunk (象鼻) from the river, could weensure his survival. The problem was that the river was a little bit changeable. Immediately, I decided to act. I jumped in and lifted his heavy, twitching trunk from the water with the help of lifeguards. The team tried to fit him with a collar, but we discovered that we didn’t have one big enough.

We couldn’t risk keeping him there while we created a bigger collar. So I struggled on, holding his trunk high with all my strength. And medicine that took away the efforts of the tranquillizer was delivered.

As soon as his ears started to move, a sign of coming to life, I dropped his trunk and moved to safety. Within a couple of minutes, he was back to life. That was one of my proudest moments
