1 . Nowadays, taking no notice of protecting the environment leads to problems including global warming. While discussing with my daughter about going green, I remembered the daily practices in most households in India. What we did was actually helping our environment and also protecting our resources. We did all this naturally, without even realizing its importance.

We preferred reusing pens in the past. We used to have ball pens used again and again by changing the refills and we also used ink pens, which were refreshed now and then by filling ink in them when required. There was no such thing as a use-and-throw pen. We loved the process of cleaning the writing instruments. However, today, plastic pens that do not last long are ruling the stationery(文具)shops.

We recycled and reused newspapers without really thinking twice about it. Newspapers were kept carefully during those days because they were an important material used for packing and storing. Today plastic bags have become important, All these materials pollute our land and water and prevent all conservation(保护)efforts.

Public transport was a common thing in the old days and it was so much fun. Nowadays.no one seems to have the patience to take public transport and many consider it too silly for them. So people take their cars out every day and pollute the environment, thinking it makes the m look cool. Vehicular (车辆的) pollution in cities is the biggest contributor to environmental problems.

I am not against the usage of modern technologies. In fact, it has helped make our life casier. While we can use the same technology to go green instead of polluting the environment, we should also go back to a few old traditions that are ecofriendly.

3 . A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women's shoes. Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.

A San Francisco-based company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company's co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women's feet. They take plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then bonded together. This is done by a 3-D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while people are making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe's outer part called the sole(鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.

Rothy's shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We're not going to run out of water bottles any time soon, so we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.

For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shops in the near future.

1. How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?
A.They are used to make shoes.
B.They are buried or burned.

5 . The world's largest iceberg (冰山)is floating toward the island of South Georgia in the southern Atlantic Ocean. Scientists fear the iceberg could crash into the island and block major feeding areas for a large population of penguins (企鹅)and seals.

Satellite images show the iceberg has remained in one piece. It is estimated to be about 150 kilometers long and 48 kilometers wide. It is traveling at one kilometer an hour and is on a path to hit South Georgia in around 30 days.

The British Antarctic Survey says it is concerned that if the iceberg hits the island, it could prevent the penguins and seals from reaching food supplies.

Professor Geraint Tarling, an ecologist with the Antarctic Survey, says right now is the time of year when seals and penguins spend a lot of time caring for their young. This means the distance that parents have to travel to find food is important.

"That means they have to go a lot further, they have to go around the iceberg, or to actually go further to find sources of food," Tarling said. "And that time is quite important at this particular period of their life cycle."

The breaking off of icebergs from Antarctica is a natural process. But the process is changing with climate change. " What we 're seeing with models and some observations now is the rate at which this is happening is increasing. And so, this might become more of a usual thing into the future," Tarling said.

The iceberg also could damage South Georgia's valuable fishing industry. Fishers pay for the rights to catch Patagonian toothfish, icefish and krill (磷虾)in waters off the island.

Officials are hoping that changing weather patterns could direct the iceberg out into the open ocean, where it would, in time, break up and melt.

1. What will happen if the iceberg hits the island of South Georgia?
A.Wildlife will lose their homes.
B.The iceberg will remain in one piece.
C.The island of South Georgia will disappear.
D.Feeding will be challenging for penguins and seals.
2. What can we learn from what Tarling says?
A.Icebergs are coming off faster than before.
B.Penguins and seals' birth rates are increasing.
C.The iceberg's breaking off is caused by human.
D.It's unusual to see the iceberg melting is speeding.
3. What does the last paragraph tell us?
A.The present situation is beyond hope.
B.The weather patterns are controllable.
C.The iceberg is bound to melt very soon.
D.The crash of the iceberg may be avoidable.
4. What's the main theme of the passage?
A.The changing climate in Antarctica.B.The potential problems of the iceberg.
C.The island of South Georgia.D.The population of sea animals.

6 . Friendship is an important part of human life. Friends can share our joys and sadnesses. We aren't alone. Many different animals also make friends.

Recently, a British research team finished an eight-year study of Indo-Pacific dolphins off the coast of Western Australia. These dolphins can use different tools to search for food. The researchers found that these dolphins are more willing to hang out with partners that like the same tool. Other factors, like family closeness or sex, have no impact on this relationship. It suggests that dolphins form social bonds based on shared interests.

Apart from dolphins, elephants and horses are also known to form friendships. Are friendships only limited to the same species?

Of course not, The Atlantic reported. In 2015,Timur, a goat, was left in the enclosure(围场) of a tiger, Amur, as a meal. But instead of eating Timur, Amur liked to play with him and got angry when others were close to his friend. That's because in captivity(圈养), animals don't need to spend much time and energy marking their land or looking for mates the way they would in the wild. They are actually more likely to feel bored.

More interestingly, animals not only make friends but also try to keep lasting friendships. Take bats for example. In 2011, scientists found bats often hang out with a few particular friends, keeping loose ties to the rest of their group. Humans are different. "We do not work, play and live together with the same friends all the time," Swiss zoologist Gerald Kerth explained. "But nevertheless, we are able to maintain long-term despite our often highly dynamic(充满活力的)social lives."

1. What do dolphins pay more attention to when making friends?
A.The same interests.B.Family closeness.
C.Hunting behavior.D.The special sounds.
2. How can we understand Amur's action?
A.Amur wants to show Timur his land.
B.Amur longs for animals to play with him.
C.Amur has more friends than other tigers.
D.Amur pretends to be friendly to eat Timur.
3. In terms of friendship, what is the difference between humans and bats?
A.Bats usually play with certain friends.
B.Humans keep their friendship longer.
C.Bats like to live together with friends.
D.Humans make friends in social activities.
4. How is the text mainly developed?
A.By listing data.B.By taking examples.
C.By asking questions.D.By giving advice.

7 . Foxes have become a part of life in Britain's urban areas. They are striking creatures but they are also dangerous.Three years ago, twin baby girls Isabella and Lola Koupparis were left with arm and face injuries after they were attacked by a fox while they were sleeping at their home.Last week,four-week-old baby boy Denny Dolan was bitten by a fox which entered his home. After gaining access to the home through the front door, the fox pulled the baby down from the sofa and tried to drag him outside, biting him and almost severing(割断) his finger.

Although fox attacks on humans are still very rare, they will become more common if we don't change our behavior towards these increasingly fearless animals. It is humans rather than foxes that are responsible for rising fox attacks on humans.

On the one hand, people who love foxes treat these wild animals like pets, leaving food out for foxes, feeding them from their hands, and even inviting foxes into their home. The result is that the fox is more brazen(厚颜无耻的)and less inclined to avoid us.It is those people who feed foxes that cause foxes to lose their fear of humans. However,as long as they have a healthy fear of humans, they won't bother humans.

On the other hand, foxes have moved into cities for lack of resources in rural areas. We take away their natural habitat to build more houses and factories.Foxes have no choice but to live and search for food in the city.If they live in the forest,no fox attack will happen.

We have to learn to share the earth with animals and let foxes return to their natural habitat. We also have to learn to look upon foxes as wild animals. We have to remember that they are instinctive killers, efficient and silent with only one purpose, kill to eat.We must certainly not intervene them, even when they look starved. They are hungry for a reason. The hunger will force them to hunt for rabbits and other animals instead of waiting for food at your door.

1. We can learn from the passage that
A.it is common for people to spot foxes in British cities
B.it is very difficult for people to raise foxes as pets
C.it is common for foxes to attack a child in Britain's urban areas
D.it is very dangerous for foxes to live in Britain's urban areas
2. Why do more and more foxes flood into cities?
A.Because urban people love the cute animal.
B.Because foxes lack natural resources in the forest.
C.Because no houses are built for them in the forest.
D.Because their habitats are occupied by other animals.
3. We can learn from the passage that the author                     .
A.is very cruel to foxes
B.is a wild animal lover
C.is concerned about foxes
D.is against feeding foxes
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.It is humans rather than foxes that are to blame for the rising fox attacks on humans.
B.People in cities must certainly not feed foxes, even when they look starved.
C.Human beings have to learn to live in harmony with wild animals in cities.
D.Foxes in British cities are striking creatures but they are also dangerous animals.

8 . When the leaves begin to change their colors and the birds head south, we know the season is starting to change. On September 7 comes White Dew (白露), the 15th solar term (节气) of the year. It indicates (标志着) the beginning of the cool autumn. As the temperature falls, white dew is often seen on the grass and trees at night.

For w riters and poets, autumn is a difficult season to describe. It ’s the end of the summer, and therefore a little sad. The days seem to get shorter, and when you wake in the morning, t here’s mist(薄雾) and it’s cooler. Winter is just around the corner.

American writer Ernest Hemingway wrote in his book A Moveable Feast (《流动的盛宴》), “You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches (枝条) were bare (光秃秃的) against the wind and the cold, wintry light. ”

But on the other hand, autumn has its good side. There are so many changes at this time of year, such as the colorful leaves and cooler nights. French w riter Albert Camus even thought autumn was a second spring,   “when every leaf is a flower.” This view is also found in the most famous autumn poem in English literature, To Autumn by John Keats. In that poem, Keats says that autumn has its own songs, just like spring.

Another theme of this season is wisdom (智慧). The arrival of autumn is thought to be similar to a person becoming mature (成熟的).

The great Irish poet W.B. Yeats used this idea in his poem The Wild Swans at Coole (《库尔的野 天鹅》), writing about the changing seasons in Coole Park in the west of Ireland. Seeing and counting 59 swans, he remembers first making the count as a young man. Seeing the swans do the same thing for all those years, he’s reminded (提醒) that even though we get older, our hearts always stay the same age.

10 . The Mississippi is a romantic river whose relationship with man goes back beyond its discovery by the Spaniards in the 16th century. Indians used the river as a highway and as a source of food, and it was they who gave it its name —''misi'', meaning ''great'' and ''sipi'' meaning ''water''.

When the length of its great tributary (支流), the Missouri, is added to it, the Mississippi becomes the third longest river in the world. From the source of the Missouri to the tip of the delta (三角洲), it is 2,480 miles long. Its head waters have been compared to a healthy, thick-branched tree, healthy because its main branches, or tributaries, are navigable for most of their length.

The Indians paddled up and down the river in their canoes. The first streamer was launched in 1810. It had a single great paddle-wheel at the stern, and was known as a ''paddle-wheeler.'' Throughout the 19th century these unique ships were queens of the Mississippi. They have become part of American history and American literature. The noted writer, Mark Twain, immortalized (使不朽) the river in his greatest novel, Huckleberry Finn, and Oscar Hammerstein immortalized it in his song, Old Man River, which was made popular all over the world by the great black American singer and actor, Paul Robeson.
