2 . Can everything be recycled? No, not all things can be recycled. But you might be surprised to learn how many things can be recycled. You may already know about plastic bottles. Did you know you can also recycle glass?

Glass can be recycled to make all sorts of things. Recycling glass really helps the planet. Making new products from recycled glass causes less air and water pollution. It also uses less energy than making new glass.

When glass arrives at a recycling plant, people and machines sort it by color. Similar colors of glass must be recycled together. That way, recycled products are as pure as possible. This makes them stronger and less likely to break. Once the glass is sorted, it's washed. That's when the breaking begins. That's right! To be recycled, glass has to be broken to make a material called cullet(碎玻璃).

Glass manufacturers love cullet. It's cheaper than the raw materials they'd need to make new glass. It also melts at a lower temperature. That means they save energy during the production process. Glass manufacturers mix cullet with other materials like sand and soda ash. Then they heat it to over 2,600℉. This makes liquid glass, which can then be poured into a mold (模具). There, it cools and forms a finished glass product.

Most recycled glass is used to make new glass containers, such as jars and bottles. However, recycled glass can also find its way into all sorts of other products including a variety of construction products.

Do you recycle at home or school? What glass products should you be sure to recycle when you’ re done with them? With everyone doing their part, recycling glass can make a huge difference to the planet!

3 . In the United States, many teachers keep fish, hamsters(仓鼠),and other animals in their classrooms.Teachers say students learn important lessons from the animals.More than 70 percent of teachers who have classroom pets say the animals help students learn responsibility.Research also shows that classroom pets can reduce stress.

“Pets can comfort kids who are having a bad day,”says Lisa Robbins, who works fora group called Pets in the Classroom.

But others think pets should be expelled from classrooms. In January, the Durango School District in Colorado began following a no-pet policy(政策).Now animals can be brought into Durango schools for certain lessons, but they can't stay.Officials were worried that animals might create problems for kids with allergies(过敏症).They were also concerned about the animals getting proper care.

Here's what two of our readers think.

Having classroom pets gives students a fun way to learn about animals. In my class last year,we had a class pet named Elliot. Our teacher also used him to teach us about different subjects. For example,in math,we calculated (计算)how much it costs to feed Elliot for a year.

Pets also help kids learn how to work as a team. My classmates and I took turns feeding Elliot and cleaning his tank,

If teachers are worried about students with allergies, they could get pets that don't have fur.

—D' Lasia Mays,Texas

Classroom pets can take away valuable class time. Some students might have a hard time focusing on the teacher when there are animals in the room.

Plus, having a classroom pet can cause safety problems. You never know how an animal will react to students.Even a cute little hamster might hurt a kid who sticks his or her hand in its cage.

—Patrick McKinney,Ohio

Some scientists say there will not be enough land for Earth in the near future. So some other places should    1     (find) to live. While some scientists are considering     2     (build) communities on the Moon and Mars, other scientists feel independent space stations could bring many more     3     (benefit).

So what is wrong    4     the Moon or Mars? Firstly, the distances are a problem. The Moon is about 384,400 miles from Earth. Mars is over 55 million miles away. The journey to the Moon takes about eight days, and the one to Mars takes from six to eight months. It will be both time-consuming and    5     (danger) to get settlers to these distant places. Moreover, it takes a message up to 44 minutes to go from Earth to Mars,     6     makes fast communication impossible. However,     7     space station circling Earth is just a few hours away. This makes the trip much cheaper and communication    8     (relative) easy. Furthermore, the    9     (absent) of light at night on the Moon and Mars isn’t a good thing either. On a space station, however, the sun’s energy can be made available     10     (support) people living there 24 hours a day.

6 . Cheng Gang is a home renovation (整修) worker in Zhongzhai Town, southwest China’s Guizhou Province. Living in a three-story building with his family, he has a steady income. It is hard to imagine that he used to worry about where his next meal will come from a few years ago.

At that time, he lived in Daping Village and grew corn for a low income. The village sits in the steep mountains at an elevation of 1,800 meters, where wild monkeys are commonly seen. To the villagers, the naughty monkeys are both their old neighbors and a big trouble. Chen’s cornfields were damaged by them from time to time.

To protect the ecological environment while solving the problem of poverty, the government carried out a relocation policy by moving residents to Zhongzhai in early 2017. The policy has bought changes to Chen and other villagers. The goal of the policy was not just to relocate villagers but make their lives better and solve practical problems after the move.

The mountain roads were steep in Daping. Children had to walk five kilometers for over one hour to school. And during rainy days, falls were frequent occurrences. Now the children from the relocated households can go to a school that’s only about 100 meters away, with more qualified teachers and better facilities.

The happiest thing for Chen and his fellow villagers is that they have finally shaken off poverty after years of hoping. The town government provides free training courses on various working skills. Having learned how to renovate a house, Chen’s monthly income is about 3,000 yuan. His wife also found a job in a nearby tea mountain.

Meanwhile, their relocation has given wild monkeys a better environment in the nature reserve. There are about 2,000 wild monkeys in the world, of which around 730 inhabit the Mayang River National Reserve. As being neighbors with monkeys has become a thing of the past, people from Daping Village are embracing the new life they have hoped for.

7 . My work started in 2003 at my local animal shelter’s Adoption Department. It seems like such a long time ago. In the 13 years that have passed, more than 50,000 animals have passed the doors of the shelter. Most of them, I do not remember. But occasionally there are animals who stand out. Tabby was one such animal.

Tabby was one of the many homeless dogs. What’s more, she was blind and deaf. Tabby’s chances at adoption seemed remote at best. But one day a woman named Loretta came to the shelter. Her son, Gary, who suffered from epilepsy (癫痫) had seen Tabby’s picture on the shelter’s website. They were interested in meeting her! Most boys would want a puppy, a dog who could grow with him and run through grassy fields on summer days. Tabby would never be able to do that. But as they say, "love is blind". After meeting her, they decided to adopt Tabby!

If Tabby’s story had simply ended with her successful adoption, it would still have been something very special indeed but it was what happened after her adoption that some might label as "magical" or perhaps even miraculous. As Gary and Tabby did everything together, they became so "in tune" with one another that Tabby began to telegraph Gary’s seizures (疾病发作) before they occurred, giving his family a warning that one was about to strike. What’s more, Gary seemed to be having fewer and fewer seizures since Tabby’s arrival.

How could it be? There are some things that happen in this world that challenge all logic and understanding. Sometimes, the best that we can do is to accept a miraculous thing, which we didn’t attempt to explain. Because when you try to explain it, you lose the beauty and wonder of it all.

1. Which sentence can be used to describe Tabby?
A.She was so lovely that she could be easily adopted.
B.She suffered a lot from the disease-epilepsy.
C.She was so strong that she could run very fast.
D.She was homeless and couldn’t see or hear.
2. What does the underlined word "miraculous" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Amazing.B.Typical.C.Interesting.D.Special.
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Gary learnt about Tabby from a magazine.
B.Gary was cured in the company of Tabby.
C.Tabby could indicate a seizure before it struck.
D.Most boys would have the same decision as Gary.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Love is Blind: a Miraculous DogB.Give Me Food: My Dear Master
C.Love is Everywhere: a Poor DogD.Take Me Home: My Dear Boy

8 . Anyone wanting to help the poor may like this idea—recycling aluminum cans in a different way, which is apparently also good for the environment. So you're actually killing two birds with one stone. It goes without saying that recycling aluminum cans can save resources, energy, time and money. People usually save and place aluminum cans in the dustbins, which are then collected and taken away by cleaners, who will finally recycle them in the recycling center. But if you save the aluminum cans, and skip the cleaners, you can save these same cans for something more important—helping the poor. In other words, by doing less, you are giving the environmental cause some new significance.

Here is how to put this idea into action. Take your aluminum cans and place them in a plastic bag. For the dirty ones, rinse them out first. Store the bag of clean aluminum cans. Once you collect about one hundred cans or more, take the cans to the recycle center yourself. There are about eighteen aluminum cans in a pound. And you can receive three to four dollars for one hundred cans. Donate your three to four dollars to the poor or any charity organization of your choice.

By now, you may wonder if your few dollars have really made a difference to the poor. Consider this: Is there any individual or any specific event that is great enough to change the world or decide the direction that history takes? The answer is probably no. What if there were a lot of people who would do the same thing? History shows nothing but the collective will of the whole community. And that will surely be powerful enough to make a bigger difference.

Go to your community or your school and spread your idea. Share your idea and save your aluminum cans with other people. One hundred people can speak louder than one. And the money you make by saving cans can be multiplied by one hundred times. And if more people join in the cause around the world, an even larger difference can be made , and more people in need will enjoy the benefits.

1. What's special about the new idea?
A.It makes profits.B.It saves resources.
C.It benefits the poor.D.It involves cleaners.
2. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.Dirty cans do not sell well.B.You decide who receives the money.
C.A hundred cans weigh about 3 pounds.D.The recycle center is conveniently located.
3. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A.A great individual or event.B.The direction history takes.
C.The collective will of people.D.The neighbourhood you live in.
4. Which of the following does the writer want to tell us?
A.Many hands make light work.B.Kill two birds with one stone.
C.Don't put the cart before the horse.D.No man can do two things at once.
