3 . New animal species
We share the Earth with millions of animal species.
In a South American rainforest, 60 new species of animals were found in 2012. Scientists say the reason so many new kinds of animals were found there is that this rainforest was almost untouched by humans. Six new species of frogs were discovered at this time.
In Turkey, scientists have found a new species of wood scorpion(木蝎).

When I was admitted to the University of Alabama, I decided to get a puppy. So I adopted an adorable Golden Retriever(金毛猎犬) puppy against my parents’ wishes.
Soon, I realized my parents were right. The dog was so naughty that it caused me a lot of trouble every day. In fact, she soon earned the nickname(绰号) Bella the Devil at school.
However, as time went by, she taught me how to be a better dog mom, and I taught her how to be a better dog. We became best friends and did everything together. Bella was there for me all the time: parties, restaurants, games, even dates! We loved spending time together. By the time I was a senior, Bella and I developed a stronger relationship. She was truly my best friend.
In the third year, I worked at the local college l bar not far from the house. One night, I was running late. Bella and I had been with friends down the street when I realized it was already 9:00 p.m. We had to rush home so I could make it to work by 9:30. I ran through the front door and jumped to the bathroom to have a shower. Bella followed me into the bathroom and lay in her usual place on the bathroom floor. Then I heard my front door open. It was so loud that I thought it was strange. It couldn’t be my roommate for she had flown to New York. I turned off the shower and yelled her name. No answer.

6 . When all those May flowers start to show their heads out to say hello, you may see some familiar faces in your backyard. Many plants live and die within one growing season, so gardeners must replant them each spring. But others have developed to live year after year, so they can blossom again.
Many flowers are what we call annuals. Their entire life cycle—from seed to death—takes just one year. They might leave behind sleeping seeds, but the roots and leaves all fade away as-soon as the season is done. Then there are perennials, which can survive for years. Scientists believe these types of plants came first. They do no need to be replanted each season, but save some energy in themselves so that they can show again in the following season.
James Boyer, the vice president for children’s education at the New York Botanical Garden, says that annuals probably can survive in areas where there is little water. “Annuals are putting all of their chances into the reproduction basket,” Boyer explains. “All of the energy to make roots and shoots is just enough to create a big bloom. They will create enough seeds to continue the species. Perennials hide important parts inside protective buds to keep cells fresh until it’s time to bloom again. They devote a lot more of their fuel to keeping themselves alive than annuals do. Roots and leaves are repaired and regrow each year. Many eventually produce flowers, but it can sometimes take years. And in most cases, they’ll save enough energy to flower again in the following season.”
Whether a plant is a perennial or an annual can depend on where you plant it. Plants sold in cold areas that are named as annuals actually could be perennials in hot areas; in warm weather they can live for years, but a single cold winter will wrack them.
Boyer says that researchers are trying to study them. “If we could change corn into a perennial, we wouldn’t need to replant it every year, which destroys the soil and its ecosystem,” Boyer says. “It could change our agricultural system.”

Working as a tour guide in the scenic White Island of New Zealand sounds like a dream come true for an adventurous man, unless of course, the incredible happens.
At 21, Jack Stevenson was working as a tour guide on White Island when he was caught in the middle of a killer volcanic eruption. Considered an active volcano, many have questioned the decision to allow tourists to visit White Island. But its splendid scenery, warm and skilled natives there and adventurous exploration attract more than 18,000 people travel to that spot every year.
Jack along with a group of tourists hiked its winding trails, admired the impressive beauty, dived into its cold lakes, and fished for treats in its streams. Of course, he knew the mountain was an active volcano... Still there is a village at the foot of it.
Suddenly Jack found himself in the middle of the deadliest and most destructive volcanic event in its history. Black smoke rolled down the side of the mountain towards the village as soon as they felt the earthquake, and then ash and rock erupted everywhere. Men, women and children tried their best to go as far away from the volcano as possible as the lava melted its way quickly.

10 . While we were searching the heavens, science and all the corners of the Earth, the secret of immortality (永生) may have been floating in the ocean this whole time in the form of a jellyfish (水母).
Jellyfish start their lives as tiny cigar-shaped creatures that move in circles through the water, looking for a rock or something handy to attach itself to. Once firmly in place, they transform into polyps (水螅), which are small creatures with a body shaped like a tube. When the conditions are right, these polyps bloom in large numbers and when they bloom, baby jellyfish are produced.
If the start of jellyfish life wasn't extraordinary enough, its death is where things get really exciting. When the medusa jellyfish dies, it sinks to the bottom and begins to die. Amazingly, its cells then reorganize, not into a new medusa, but into polyps, and from these polyps comes new jellyfish. The jellyfish has skipped to an earlier life stage to begin again. Dr. Lisa-ann Gershwin, a jellyfish researcher says, “It’s one of the most amazing discoveries of our time.”
It's not just the medusa jellyfish that can rise from its own ashes. In 2011, a biology student in China kept a moon jellyfish in a tank. When it died, he kept the body in another tank. Three months later, a new tiny polyp was growing out the top of the moon jellyfish. This regeneration process has now been found in around five species of jellyfish.
So aside from immortality, what’s the benefit for the jellyfish itself? Why do it? Well, it means when it becomes weakened either by age or illness, or it faces danger, it can call up its incredible survival mechanism and regenerate.
Although Dr. Gershwin says she can’t see any link currently between jellyfish immortality and our own, it doesn’t mean it would not be possible in the future. Who knows? A few jellyfish genes and we could all be like Doctor Who, regenerating whenever we want.
1. What do we know about jellyfish’s rebirth?A.It brings jellyfish no benefits. | B.It only occurs in four species. |
C.It goes through different life stages. | D.It produces a new jellyfish directly. |
