1 . Pet industry seems to resist gravity. With continual growth over the past 50 years, it shows no sign of slowing down. With people treating their pets more and more like a family member, the pet industry continues to see a rise in related products and services.
The pet industry in the USA reached a milestone in 2020, with total sales of $103.6 billion, a historic high, according to the American Pet Products Association State of the Industry Report, compared to sales of $48 billion in 2010. That is more than a 100% increase in just ten years in what you might consider to be a relatively boring industry.
The pet supplement industry has been growing rapidly as pet owners treat their cats like a member of the family, almost mirroring human behavior. Pay attention to what human trends for health as it might cross over to their pets.
And if you thought product innovation was limited to humans, you would be wrong. We are starting to see significant amounts of innovation in pet product research and development. For example: pet wipes. Pet wipes are essentially moist towelettes (湿纸巾) used on pets after going to the bathroom. Another relatively new pet product category is pet toothpaste.
The same trend goes in the high-end product as well. If it will make their pets happier, there’s a group of owners who will buy it. And that includes relatively expensive luxury products. A new brand of kitty letter (猫砂) changes color based on a cat’s urine pH levels and the company claims that the product helps cat owners detect illness in their cats.
It seems that anything humans need, pets need. So, perhaps it’s not surprising that pet insurance is on the rise. The global pet insurance market size was estimated at $3.8 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach $4.4 billion in 2020 according to Grand View Research. Even Lemonade, the AI-powered insurer recently launched its own pet insurance coverage.

6 . Super typhoon Rammasun swept over Hainan, China, destroying at least 23,000 houses and causing 2 billion dollars in damage. It was not just people who experienced the impact, though. In Hainan Bawangling National Nature Reserve, home to the world’s 30 remaining Hainan gibbons(长臂猿), landslides tore through sections of the forest. The gibbons, a species living in trees, were forced to jump across a distance of up to 50 feet to get from one area to another.
The gibbons sometimes would break their fall only by managing to catch hold of the tip of a particular palm leaf. As months passed, Bosco Chan at the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden in Hong Kong noticed that constant use caused the leaf to wear and bend downward, threatening to lead to the gibbons crashing down and breaking the extremely rare species’ habitat into different islands. “It’s really a matter of concern. Moreover, I didn’t know how long the leaf would be able to hold the gibbons,” he said. “I thought it was time for us to build something.”
As recently described in Scientific Reports, Bosco Chan and his colleagues turned to aerial(空中的) bridges. They hired professional tree climbers to confront and get over the steep landform to fix a simple bridge, consisting of two parallel mountaineering-grade ropes. It took the gibbons over five months to catch on, but once they learned to use the ropes, they started regularly using them to make safe, quick crossings.
Till now, aerial bridges have been used in other countries to help a diversity of animals ranging from squirrels to capuchin monkeys. But many are small, one-off projects carried out by local organizations or even individuals; with little or no scientific study of what does or does not work. In addition, a solution for one species or habitat may not be applicable to another.

Christmas was approaching, and I had absollutely no idea what to get for my wife. As usual, I had left my holiday shopping until the last minute. I always had the feeling that the perfect gift would somehow appear at the right time, although this didn’t always happen. This year I didn’t have any good ideas.
We had just moved to Italy. Donna was away attending a conference, so I had the rest of the week to work on the house and figure out what to get her as a Christmas gift before she got back.
My house companion (伴侣) while Donna was away was her cat, Princess. I was keeping Princess indoors in our new home until she became familiar with the place and then planned to slowly introduce her to the great outdoors.
However, one day as I was bringing in some groceries, to my shock and horror I suddenly found she was gone. Donna would be back in a few days and it would ruin Christmas for both of us if Princess was not back by then, safe and sound. Donna had already excitedly told me over the phone that she had found several fun toys and delicious snacks for Princess as Christmas gifts. She couldn’t wait to get back and wrap them up.
I was in big trouble. I had to find Princeess—and fast. So, I made a poster with her description and a hurried sketch (素描) of the cat that I personally drew because I couldn’t find a photo of her anywhere. I was sure my wife had hundreds on her phone, but I didn’t dare ask her for one. I didn’t want her to know that her precious cat had escaped.
Donna’s happy daily calls continued, as did my daily searches for Princess. I still hadn’t mentioned anything about the disappearance to my wife. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. It would destroy her.
Finally, the day came for my wife to return.

10 . Dogs can smell the difference between odors (气味) from humans when they’re stressed and when they’re calm, according to a study published Wednesdey.
Researchers first collected breath and sweat samples (样本) from study participants (参与者) to use as a baseline. Afterward, these people performed a task, counting backward from 9,000 in units of 17 in front of two researchers for three minutes.“If the participant gave a correct answer, they were given no feedback and were expected to continue, and if they gave an incorrect answer the researcher would stop them with ‘no’ and tell them their last correct answer,” said lead study author Clara Wilson.
The study team collected another round of breath and sweat samples after the task was completed. Additionally, the researchers collected reported stress levels, heart rate and blood pressure before and after the task. Thirty-six palticipants who reported feeling stressed and had increased heart rate and blood pressure had their samples shown to the dogs.
The researchers presented post-task breath alnd sweat samples from one person to 20 dogs along with two other blank control samples. The dogs needed to choose the correct sample at least seven out of 10 times to move onto the next stage.
In the second and final stage, the study team showed the four dogs that passed stage one the same samples they smelt in stage one along with a sample from the same individual collected before the task and a blank.
The dogs chose the right sample in 93.8% of the tests, which suggested that the stress odors were quite different. “It was fascinating to see how able the dogs were at discriminating between these odors when the only difference was that a mental stress response had occurred,” she said.
More experimentation needs to be done outside of a lab to see how applicable the results of this study are in the real world, Wilson said. These findings also open the door to future research to study if dogs can recognize different emotionss, plus how long the dogs are sensible to the Qdors, she said.
