2 . Are plants intelligent?Science is beginning to think so. In 2013, The New Yorker published an article that set the plant sciences world on fire, forever changing the way both the public and researchers looked at and studied the plant kingdom. The “Intelligent Plant” was previously unheard of.
Communication: A lot of evidence suggests that plants, trees in particular, can communicate with one another
Learning:
Memory: As research and experiment continue into the plant memory, people can’t help but ask the question “how can something without a brain have memories?” Studies have determined that plants can indeed learn and create memories.
Figuring out the “plant brain” question is the logical next step. As more research comes in, the more it seems to indicate plant intelligence as a very real possibility.
A.Can plants be taught? |
B.Can they remember things in general? |
C.This communication occurs through underground networks. |
D.It makes no sense to research plants communication methods. |
E.They can display their memory recall through learned response. |
F.The following behavioral characteristics are from the experiments. |
G.Therefore, the plant biology community claimed it was completely baseless. |
3 . Doing a bit of research before you sort your trash can make all the difference. Recycling rules differ from one city to another. Here are a few ways to help you do it better.
■Don’t put your recyclables in a plastic bag
It’s not that we don’t have the technology to recycle plastic bags, but it is risky to recycle them because the bags are so lightweight and flexible that they end up getting caught in the recycling equipment!
Your best option is to bring your plastic bags to a drop-off recycling center where it has the right equipment to recycle them.
■You can recycle plastic caps together with bottles
In the past, we were told to separate the cap from the bottle when recycling. Bottles are made from # 1plastic while their caps #5 plastic. They are at different melting temperatures and need to be processed separately. But now, advanced machines have made it easier to separate bottles and caps.
At present, what you need to do is leave the plastic bottle cap on the bottle and ensure the bottle is free of all liquids before throwing it into the bin.
■You can’t recycle a pizza box
Although cardboard itself is recyclable, pizza boxes are not. Why? It all comes down to the oil. When you place oily cardboard into a recycling bin, you run the risk of polluting clean, recyclable things. And an entire pack of polluted recyclables can cost more.
But if only a small part of your box is oily, pull that piece off the box and throw just that piece away while the rest of the box can then be recycled.
1. Why can’t we place recyclables in a plastic bag when sorting trash?A.It will cause more pollution. |
B.The equipment may fail to work. |
C.Plastic bags are not tough enough. |
D.No technology is available to recycle plastic bags. |
A.Collect them into a specific bin. | B.Put them into different machines. |
C.Separate the caps from the bottles. | D.Empty the bottles and re-cap them. |
A.The oil on it. | B.Lack of proper facilities. |
C.Its harmful materials | D.Different melting temperatures. |
4 . There is a myth that people can see glass, but birds can’t.
Many people are injured every year. They collide with unmarked doors and windows; embarrassment is the usual result.
Birds can learn to avoid glass. For example, birds in zoo exhibits learn to avoid exhibit walls if the glass is marked for the first few days of their residence.
Birds hit glass because it presents a triple threat. One is that reflections of vegetation or landscape attract birds to collide with glass.
As researchers have begun to understand collisions, they are creating better approaches to reduce impacts on birds. For example, some have documented mortality(死亡) patterns and how they are influenced by lighting, the amount of glass present, the distribution of nearby vegetation, and other variables.
This science has come along way, but many questions remain unanswered. Our efforts on the testing of bird-friendly materials are helping to expand understanding of how birds sec and respond to their environment, and will lead to more effective solutions.
A.In fact, neither birds nor people can see glass. |
B.Wild birds can learn about specific pieces of glass. |
C.Each year up to one billion birds hit glass in the U. S. alone. |
D.Therefore glass can be the invisible killer of birds in particular. |
E.So architects and other professionals can design innovative bird-watching buildings. |
F.Others have looked at the type of structure to identify which poses the most risk. |
G.Green habitat inside buildings with see-through glass can also trick birds to their death. |

6 . Bosses trying to quickly increase productivity should give up brainstorming meetings and instead invest in office plant, a study has found.
Green plants in offices increase work output by 15 percent, and challenges the “lean philosophy”(极简哲学)which holds that tidy buildings are best for concentration.
In experiments at two large commercial offices in the UK and The Netherlands, it was found that plants significantly increased workplace satisfaction, levels of focus, and air quality. “Simply decorating an office space with plants help to increase productivity by 15 percent,” said lead researcher Marlon Nieuwenhuis.
“This conclusion doesn't agree with the modern ‘lean’ management techniques, yet it points out a path to a more enjoyable, more comfortable and a more profitable form of office-based workings.” She added, “Our research suggests that investing in decorating the office with plants will pay off through an increase in workers’ quality of life and productivity. It directly challenges the widely accepted business philosophy that a lean office with clean desks is more productive.”
Previous studies have shown that the presence of plants can reduce physiological(生理上的) stress, increase the attention span and improve health and well-being.
Researchers studied offices over several months during which plants were removed and added. Professor Alex Haslam, who also worked on the study, added, “The lean philosophy has been influential across a wide range of organizational fields. Our research questions this widespread belief that less is more. Sometimes less is just less.”
Plants are beneficial because a green office makes employees more physically and emotionally involved in their work.
Another researcher Dr. Craig Knight said: “Psychologically manipulating(处理,操纵)real workplaces and real jobs adds new depth to our understanding of what is right and what is wrong with existing workspace design and management. We are now providing a model of a really smart office.”
1. According to the “lean philosophy”, ________.A.green plants can increase productivity. |
B.green plants may disturb people’s concentration. |
C.a beautiful environment is beneficial to productivity. |
D.green plants will help bosses come up with new ideas. |
A.it may create a new way of management. |
B.it will lead to less investment in offices. |
C.it may lead to a better form of office-based workings. |
D.it challenges the widely accepted brainstorming meetings. |
A.The “lean philosophy” is widely adopted nowadays. |
B.A green office helps employees focus on their work. |
C.Green plants will make office workers more efficient. |
D.When it comes to decorating offices, the less the better. |
A.blame the “lean philosophy”. |
B.show how to increase productivity. |
C.Persuade bosses to remove plants from offices. |
D.indicate the effects of green plants on works’ efficiency. |

It was a Sunday and the heavy storm lasted all night. The morning before the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently.
My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invites my sister and me to go with him. I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, and I decided to go all the same. I'm so glad I did.
On the road to the harbor we could see the terribly destruction on the coast, but the harbor itself was in fairly good shape. After all, it protected by the arms of a bay that had only one tiny channel to the sea. As we got on the board, we noticed two big humps(脊背)in the distance.
On approached them, we saw it was a mother whale with his baby. We couldn't believe it—there aren't any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them across the ocean into the bay, in that the still water was such badly polluted that nothing could survive.
10 . The Amazon rain forest is on fire. There are more fires burning there than ever before. That's according to Brazil's National Institute for Space Research. Using satellites to track deforestation and wildfires, the agency has counted 74,155 fires in the Amazon this year. That's roughly an 84% increase over last year at this time. The effects of the fires are being felt across Brazil. Parts of the country are covered in smoke. In the state of Sao Paulo, heavy smoke caused the sky to go black and blocked the sun on Monday. Other Brazilian states have declared the situation an emergency. One state has been put on “environmental alert.”
Some people think the policies of Brazil's president, Jair Bolsonaro, have led to the increase in fires. He wants to change laws that protect the Amazon so businesses can clear more land for commercial use. Bolsonaro says the fires are blazing simply because “it is the season of the queimada."(Queimada means "burned" in Portuguese. Portuguese is the official language of Brazil.)
But experts say Bolsonaro is wrong. They don't blame the increase in fires on the season. They point to deforestation and a worldwide increase in temperatures. “Trees, if they're stressed out by heat repeatedly, are more susceptible toother kinds of damage,” such as fires, says Deborah Lawrence. She's an environmental sciences professor at the University of Virginia.
Carlos Nobre is a Brazilian climate scientist. He's also an expert in tropical forests. The situation is “very sad,” according to Nobres. “We usually would see this surge of fire in very, very exceptionally dry years,” he says. “The fact that this record—breaking figure comes out in a relatively un—dry dry season shows that deforestation is increasing.”
