文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了丝绸之路的历史,地理位置以及重要作用。

1 . The Silk Road is the name of different roads that long ago connected Europe, Africa and Asia. People reached these different places along these roads. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3000 years ago. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road covered almost 6500 kilometers. It spread from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.

Traders travelling along the Silk Road carried silk, of course. They also carried and traded spices (香料), cloth, valuable stones and gold.

There is a famous old story along the old road. It is said that Roman soldiers travelled through central Asia. They started to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese village of Liqian. Sortie of these Romans married local Chinese women and the story of blue-eyed villages of China was started.

During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable goods and new ideas. These included people and trading goods from the Mediterranean, Persian, Magyar, Armenian, Bactrian, Indian and Chinese areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.

In modern times, the old Silk Road routes (路线) are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan in China. It has over 35,000, objects from all along the Silk Road. In this way, China protects the history of many countries and peoples.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了动物迁徙的遗传和文化两种模式,以及一种鸟类通过探索和精炼学习迁徙模式的特殊方式。

2 . In habitats across the planet, animals periodically drop everything to walk, fly or swim to a new place. Some animals such as whales and geese learn migration paths by following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration.

Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. The Cory’s shearwater is an oceangoing seabird that migrates over the Atlantic every year. The young do not migrate with their parents, so culture cannot explain their journeys. And the exact paths vary wildly from individual to individual, making genetics equally unlikely.

Cory’s shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration patterns. Researchers call this the “exploration-refinement”, and until now it has been hypothetical (假设的) because of difficulties in tracking migratory animals’ movements.

But a team of researchers has done that by attaching small geolocators to more than 150 of the birds aged four to nine. They found that younger birds traveled longer distances, for longer periods, and had more diverse paths than older birds. “We finally have evidence of the ‘exploration-refinement’ for migratory birds,” says Letizia Campioni, who led the study. Younger Cory’s shearwaters are able to fly just as fast as the adults——but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring, which gradually fades as they mature and settle into a preferred course.

“Although it may seem less efficient than other strategies, exploration refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms in a rapidly changing world due to unpredictable man-made changes,” says Barbara Frei. “It might be safer to repeat a behavior that was recently successful than to rely on patterns that were perfected long ago but might no longer be safe.”

1. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.It describes animals’ habitats.B.It compares different species.
C.It talks about migration models.D.It introduces a tracking technology.
2. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The opening for learning and practice.
B.The unique living habit of Cory’s shearwaters.
C.The process scientists track Cory’s shearwaters’ movements.
D.The way Cory’s shearwaters form their migration patterns.
3. What does Letizia’s study find about the younger Cory’s shearwaters?
A.They travel as much as adult birds.B.They lower the speed for exploration.
C.They move in a predictable manner.D.They look for a course with their parents.
4. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A.Exploration refinement contributes to birds’ adaptability.
B.Man-made changes make migration easier.
C.Animals make a safer journey via a fixed track.
D.A combination of strategies assures migration success

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了一种奇特的自然现象——“动物”雨,及其形成原因。

3 . On Saturday 24 August 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish—sand eels (沙鳗)—lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen solid (冻成硬块).

Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the sky and land on Sunderland?

Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout (水龙卷). Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful that anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into them for long distances —sometimes over 150 kilometers. It’s very cold up there and everything soon freezes solid.

For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012, fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico in Mexico.

It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate (气候) change and many reports of terrible storms, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs?

1. What do we know about the sand eels that landed on Sunderland?
A.They were few in number.B.They came in different sizes.
C.They were still alive when landing.D.They probably came from the North Sea.
2. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Clouds.B.Waterspouts.C.Strong winds.D.The waters of the sea.
3. The author mentions the fall of tadpoles in Japan in 2009 in order to show that        .
A.raining sea animals is not new in historyB.the environment is not pleasant in Japan
C.waterspouts can reach as far as JapanD.different animals can fall in different countries
4. In the end, what does the author probably care most about?
A.Our health.B.Our environment.C.The wild animals.D.The news reports.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何利用双筒望远镜来对天空进行观察。

5 . Does the night sky excite you? Astronomy can be a (most) wonderful pastime activity. There are many things to learn for fun, and a chance to discover something new. In fact, some amateur astronomers have made great discoveries just with their eyes or binoculars (双筒望远镜).

Beginners to astronomy should shy away from buying telescopes until they’ve watched the universe through binoculars. These simple instruments help beginners get used to seeing the view through a more powerful instrument than the naked eye. With a telescope, not only are the pictures upside down, but they are usually greatly magnified (放大): much bigger than the normal size. Thus, it’s best to test your skills first with binoculars.

A good pair of binoculars opens a completely new world that can’t be seen with the naked eye. In our solar system alone, binoculars can show craters (坑,环形山) on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, states of Venus, four bright moons of Jupiter, all the planets except Pluto, small planets, and comets with tails.

We can see many more stars when using binoculars. There are hundreds of stars that we can see with binoculars. These stars often change in brightness, and they are interesting to watch. And many star clusters (群) and galaxies can be seen.

7 . Researchers at the University of Birmingham have found that bats living in a city are less likely to move from tree to tree in brightly lit areas.

Wildlife must be able to move between patches of habitat (小块栖息地), which are often separated by buildings and road. The bats studied in this experiment come out in the evening, often within housing areas, to find food in gardens and other green spaces. Therefore, they often fly along lines of trees, which can protect them from strong winds and animals that catch them for food.

The researchers, along with those from Lancaster University, were studying the effect of man-made light on the bats, especially on the pipistrelle, a common bat which could be found in many parts of UK cities. They wanted to find out whether the bats’ flying was affected by the distance between trees and the brightness of lighting within the gap (间隔). They found that the bats crossed through the darker parts of the gaps, but with lots of lighting these gaps became barriers. Importantly, this barrier effect changes with the width of the gap in the tree line — bats would stand strong lighting in small gaps, but even a low level of lighting in larger gaps was enough to stop them crossing. James Hale who led the study said: “That might explain why this common species of bats is not easily found in highly developed areas. Understanding what may affect the movement between patches of habitat is important for the protection of species in the city centre.”

1. Bats fly along lines of trees to ________.
A.stop and have a rest at times
B.protect themselves from strong lights
C.get protection against enemies and strong winds
D.make sure they keep flying in the right directions

A.kill the batsB.help the bats fly
C.stop the batsD.keep the bats warm
3. According to the research, bats’ movement would be affected by ________.
A.food supplyB.the distance between streetlights
C.the number of treesD.the development of an area
4. Which of the following about the research is true?
A.It found that bats would just move in the evening.
B.It was done to find ways to protect bats in UK cities.
C.It found the reason why bats preferred to live in a city.
D.It was led by researchers from Lancaster University alone.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章首先介绍了因为海水温度上升珊瑚正在大量消失的现状,然后讲述了科学家们如何想办法解决这一问题。

9 . Rising water temperatures and the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in our oceans are killing our beautiful coral reefs at a surprising speed. Add the current extreme weather pattern, and things look even worse.

So what makes coral so sensitive? Although it may be hard to believe, corals are not plants, but animals. The colorful reefs we admire so much happen to be skeletons(骨骼) given up by hundreds of thousands of polyps(珊瑚虫). To survive, these animals live with an algae(海藻). The coral polyps give the algae a home and then the algae provide the polyps with their bright color and food.

But the rising water temperatures are causing the coral polyps to lose their algae friends. As a result, the corals are not only losing their food source but also their beautiful colors.

The disappearance of the coral not only makes humans lose the chance to admire the beautiful coral reefs. It also removes a natural barrier which protects shorelines from storms and also fewer living places for fish and other sea animals.

To prevent these important animals from disappearing, a team of researchers are attempting to raise ‘super’ corals.

They began by selecting certain coral species that seems to have got used to the changing ocean conditions. Then they made them even more adaptable to warmer water. Once ready, the researchers plan to transplant the coral into Hawaii’s Kaneohe Bay.

This sounds simple, but they are not sure that it will work because coral is sensitive to touch and also develops very slowly and infrequently. Also, past attempts to remove coral have failed because they were either eaten by fish or died of disease.

Though there exist these dangers, researchers believe there’s no other choice to prevent the reefs from disappearing. Tom Oliver, a scientist says, “The question is not ‘can they do it?’, but ‘can they do it fast enough?’”

1. Which fact might surprise people according to the text?
A.Corals come in different colors.
B.Corals are not plants but animals.
C.Corals are sensitive to water temperatures.
D.Coral reefs can protect the coast from storms.
2. What make coral lose its color?
A.The failure to raise them.
B.Too much sunshine.
C.The polluted sea water.
D.The loss of algae friends.
3. What does the underlined word “transplant” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Remove.B.Admire.
C.Export.D.Exchange.
4. What is mainly talked about in the text?
A.Corals are of great use to people.
B.People are trying to prevent corals disappearing.
C.Human activities are affecting the growth of corals.
D.Coral polyps depend on an algae for color and food.

10 . 1970 was World Conservation Year. The United Nations wanted every one to know that the world is in danger. They hoped the governments would act quickly in order to “conserve” nature. Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 866 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology. We are changing the earth, the air and water, and everything that grows and lives. We can’t live without these things. If we continue like this, we shall destroy ourselves.

What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and so on. In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about conservation through something called “No one’s going to change our world”, which was made by the Beatles, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals.
