In a very cold January, a puppy wandered around Mr. Lacey’s house, where he lived with his wife Mamie and their daughter Doris. Icicles (冰锥) hung three feet or more from the roofs of houses and snow swallowed up cars.

The puppy had been abandoned, and it made its way down the road toward the Laceys’ small house, with its ears down and trembling from shyness and cold. Doris, whose school had been called off because of the snow, was clearing the steps when she spotted the puppy on the road.

“Come on, little dog!” she called it over. The puppy shyly wagged its tail when Doris approached. As soon as Doris put the dog down in the kitchen, her mom, Mrs. Lacey, asked where the dog came from. Mr. Lacey, who was cleaning his fingernails with his pocketknife at the table, said, “I don’t know where it came from, but I know for sure where it’s going.” Doris hugged the puppy hard against her. She said nothing.

Because of the snowy weather, Mr. Lacey couldn’t take the puppy to the shelter right away. So, it stayed in the basement, and Doris fed it leftovers, even though her mom didn’t want to waste food. Doris thought the puppy was around six months old and would be quite noisy sometimes. Surprisingly, the puppy behaved well, didn’t cry or make trouble in the basement, and only followed Doris upstairs when she invited it. Doris often found it on the basement steps listening to the kitchen talk and smelling the food. She felt the puppy wanted company.

Even after a week, Doris didn’t name the dog, knowing her parents wouldn’t let her keep it. Her father made so little money that any pets were out of the question. Desperate to keep the dog, Doris tried to convince her parents by praising the dog’s good behavior and expressing her love for it, but her parents didn’t give a definite answer.

Despite her efforts, Doris secretly wished the bad weather would never go away, fearing the puppy’s unavoidable trip to the shelter. However, nine days after the dog had arrived, the sun was shining.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Dion was having a running race. This race would stretch in six stages over seven days and cover almost 155 miles. Gobi, a little she-dog happened to join him. It was their third day.

The sky was clear, the weather was warm: the ground was firm beneath Gobi’s feet. From time to time, Dion would look over at her and smile. The warmth of that smile was even brighter than the sun beating down on them, but in a good way. It filled Gobi up.

As they progressed, a broad river popped into their sight, lying right in front. Dion had no idea how deep it was, but the race markers led right across, so he had to assume he’d be able to make it across as well.

Taking a deep breath, he took a careful step into the water. It was surprisingly cold considering how warm the day was, and he sank down up to his waist, but that was it. At least the riverbed seemed solid. He could make his way across; he just had to go slowly. One wrong step and he’d get completely wet. Plus, he could hurt himself since he couldn’t see where he was putting his feet. This was going to take a while.

Gobi watched as the man jumped into the water. She wagged her tail, but he didn’t look her way. He was clearly busy concentrating. She sat down just before the water and watched. Surely, he would turn around and notice that she wasn’t with him. But several minutes passed, and he got farther and farther away. Finally, Gobi couldn’t take it any longer. She began anxiously running up and down the riverbank. Was the man going to leave her?

At the sound of her bark, Dion stopped. He always made a point of facing forward, always forward, during a race. But this time he did glance back. Gobi was sitting at the river’s edge, barking fiercely. There was no way the little dog could cross that on her own. These days, he’d fed her, given her water, and named her. He had to admit that he liked having her with him. She lifted his spirits.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sarah was a kind girl who lived near a big forest. She loved animals more than anything else. The forest was her favorite place, where she liked to watch the animals.

One cold winter day, she found a hurt deer caught in a trap. It looked awfully scared, and Sarah knew she had to help immediately. She went close slowly and set the deer free. The deer seemed to know that Sarah was kind, and they became friends. She named the deer Grace. She built a rough shelter from old pieces of wood for Grace.

Every day, Sarah went to see Grace. She brought food, water, and bandages for Grace’s hurt leg. Slowly, the leg got better. They liked to spend time together. Sarah would read to Grace, and Grace would listen.

When spring came, Grace’s leg was all better. It was time for her to go back to the wild. Saying goodbye was very hard for Sarah. She hugged Grace and cried as she watched her go back to the forest. But she knew it was the right thing to do.

The years went by, and Sarah never forgot about Grace. She wanted to keep helping animals, so she became an animal doctor for wild animals. She helped many animals, but Grace was always special to her.

Their time together was filled with love and trust. It changed Sarah’s life and helped her know what she wanted to do. Every day, she thought about Grace’s gentle eyes and their friendship. It made her want to help other animals like she helped Grace.

Sarah’s story with Grace was more than just a girl and a deer. It was about love. trust, and understanding. It was about knowing what is right and doing it, even when it’s hard. Most of all, it was about a friendship that lasted forever, in Sarah’s heart.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was eight years old when my mother was told that she would never walk again without calipers (双脚规形夹) , and she wished to visit doctors in London.

The day before we boarded the ship, father committed (托付) his pet dog, Spider to his friend Sandy while we were overseas. We didn’t know how long my mother’s treatment would take or how long we would be away.

Six weeks later, an air-letter arrived from Sandy, saying that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed and that despite many efforts, the dog was never found. I will always remember my father’s eyes watery as he read this news. Though my mother and I tried to comfort him, we knew in our hearts how useless that was.

We sailed back to Australia two years later. My father immediately began his own search for Spider. After many false calls, we had to accept the fact that the dog was gone.

One cold winter’s Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from Gin Gin, an old lady 375 kilometers away. On the phone she said she had been putting food out “for a very yellow old dog” in the night for weeks and “it was just glimpses of the similar dog in the shadows” in her disused tennis court.

That was enough for my father to drive five and a half hours to see this yellow dog. Sadly, Gin Gin told us the yellow dog hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eyes.

The fire started in the box room It’s Thomas home office. He’d just done it up. It was clearly an electrical fault but no one thought at the time to turn off the electricity. The room started filling with smoke quickly and they had to leave immediately.

7 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Our neighbor, Mrs. Moore is an old artist, who lives alone with her cat Taffy. Her husband passed away years ago and her children work in other cities. Mrs. Moore always wears a serious look but in fact she is a very nice neighbor. She does three things every day-petting Taffy, painting and baking, among which baking is the part I like. Whenever the mouth-watering smell gets over the fence, I could expect a paper bag containing delicious cookies to be passed over the fence and shared by my sister Jennifer and me. To return this favor, my dad would mow the lawn (修剪草坪) for Mrs. Moore and help repair the water pipes.

Last year, Dad put his idea of building a tree house for us in our back yard into action. Dad shot from the hip (干事利落) and got everything in place within two weeks. It was a yellow tree house with red roof, which made a great place. for Jennifer and me to get out of the sight of Mom and Dad to have fun and talk about our girlish matters. We couldn’t wait to get in only to find Taffy had taken occupation of it and messed up the inside. We ourselves were unwilling to talk about such a problem to our nice neighbor, but we had no other choice. Dad was the one we sent to Mrs. Moore’s house for a friendly talk about the issue.

After the talk, Dad took Mrs. Moore on an inspection of the tree house, at which she was extremely astonished, saying she had never expected Taffy could be so fascinated with it. She promised to take care of the problem but to our disappointment, the cat could still find ways to climb over the fence and get into the tree house. After a thousand apologies to us, Mrs. Moore gave the problem a careful consideration and came up to a big decision: In view of Taffy’s obsession (痴迷) with a tree house, why not build one specially for him?

Onni always had a great time with his grandad in winter because his grandad would teach him how to ski and they sometimes went for trips in the nearby woods.

When Onni turned ten, his grandad told him he was old enough to go with him into the Finnish wilderness. Therefore, one day, they put on their skis and set off into the forest, travelling for several kilometres while the sky turned dark above them. Eventually, they arrived at a silent and beautiful wooden cabin. Grandad managed to push the door open. Inside, it was icy-cold and smelled damp and musty.

“Now we need a fire!” said grandad. He pointed at the pot-belly stove in the corner.

They collected armfuls of wood and chopped them up. Before long, a fire lighted up the cabin with a golden light! The old man pulled out a pan and began frying some sausages.

Onni stared out of the window. “What animals live out here?” he asked. “Oh, the forest is full of life!” his grandad answered. “I have seen snow hares, stags, bears and snowy owls. There was only one creature we never managed to see.”

“What was that?” asked Onni. He was curious!

“Firefox! They say that during the day: his fur is inky-black. But at night, it shines with the most amazing colours! The light of his fur is supposed to brighten up the night sky at midwinter creating the wonderful glow that we call the Northern Lights, which always guide the people lost in forests.”

Grandad sighed. “I always wanted to see this beast! It is said that whoever spots the Firefox would be blessed.” Hearing this, Onni looked out of the window again in the hope of being the lucky one.

Grandad turned the sausages over as they sizzled (发出咝咝声) in the pan. “Why don’t you get some more firewood, Onni?” he suggested. Onni ventured out (冒险外出) again. As the boy was gathering more wood, he heard a sound and saw a glow in the trees.

“Izzy,” Letty cries. “I need a favor.” Letty’s my best friend. “A favor” for her always turns into more. Like last time I agreed to babysit “a few kids”, and we got surrounded by twenty babies. So I ask, “What’s it?” “Crestview Shelter’s got too many animals,” she explains. “I was hoping you could keep some at your empty stable (马厩) for a while.” “No. You know I’m teaching riding lessons. I don’t have time to care for them,” I reply immediately. “I just need the space. Please,” she begs. I can’t refuse anymore. “Okay. But cats only. No dogs.” “Why?” she asks.

“Tiger.” As her name, our mouser (捕鼠猫) Tiger is the queen here, and considers the stable hers. She’ll tolerate cats, but dogs? “A neighbor’s dog wandered on the driveway once, which is close to the stable, and Tiger nearly tore his ears off,” I explain. “No dogs,” agrees Letty. “I’ll bring them tomorrow morning.”

That afternoon, Mom tells me a horse arrives to board. Horse boarding is part of our stable’s business. I hurry over only to see a huge black horse. I couldn’t see over his back. Dad waves me over. “Ms. Heidt and her horse, Titan.” I pat Titan. He doesn’t respond. “He must be tired,” I say, noting his lifeless eyes.

“Actually, he’s been like this for weeks since his partner Kerrick suddenly died. They were inseparable, and now...” Ms. Heidt says. “The animal doctor says it’s not good for him to be alone. ” “Titan’s sure to make friends here,” I tell Ms. Heidt. She hands me his lead and says, “Titan’s big, but he’s a gentleman.” She’s right. Titan follows quietly when I take him away. Horses in the stable notice Titan at once, but they hang back. There’s no interaction.

At about 9 am the next day, Letty and the animals come. As we unload the cats, a spotted dog jumps out. “What?” I shout. “I’m sorry, Izzy,” Letty says. “The staff members there insist we should give Buddy the dog a chance, so... ” ROWR! A sound interrupts her. Tiger rushes to Buddy. We hurry to get something to stop her. But suddenly we find there’s no sign of Buddy. Letty hangs her head. “I’m sorry ——” I accept her apology and we keep seeking Buddy.
