Last summer, I planned to save money for a trip. My father told to me a local zoo was looking for teenagers to work on the weekend, so I immediate applied for the position. To my delight, I got it. My first tasks was to clean the elephant’s house. Luckily, another girl who had begin working there two weeks before taught me how to do a job and that helped me a lot. Each weekend, I was sent to work with difference animals. What I liked best were feeding the giraffes. Tiring as I was while work hard at the zoo, I felt happy because I got close animals and I also earned a lot.

3 . Birds have been observed to sleep while in flight for the first time ever. Because of some flights that can often last several days, weeks or even longer, some sea birds have long been thought of being able to fall fully asleep while “on the wing”, though it was not proven.
Now researchers say they have evidence which shows birds can sleep in flight. Scientists from Max Planck Institute used a sample of 15 adult female frigatebirds (军舰鸟) to test the record changes in the animals’ brain activity as they flew for up to 10 days and over 3,000 kilometers.
The readings showed that during flight the birds could sleep using one hemisphere of the brain, or both together. It was known that frigatebirds could sleep with one “half” of the brain, which allows them to keep one eye open and “connected” to the awake half.
According to the research, it is sleeping technique used by birds for finding directions. “Frigatebirds sleep mostly while circling in rising air and keep the eye connected to the awake hemisphere facing the direction of flight, suggesting that they watch where they are going,” says the study.
Despite the ability to fall “fully” asleep, the birds were found to do it less in the air compared to one land. They slept very little and less deeply while in flight. This suggests that thought it is possible, falling totally asleep is not very good during flight which will need the bird’s attention.
The researchers said the short sleep could be serving as “power naps” to keep the birds going until they return to land. Further study could help us understand why lack of sleep affects humans so badly.

4 . When we see a person in trouble, the first idea that comes to our mind is to lend a hand. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same rule apply?
This question was raised after a group of penguins (企鹅) were saved from an icy gully (峡谷) in Antarctica. It was filmed for the BBC wildlife series Dynasties. The film crew were anxious when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into a gully and been trapped with their young. They built a slope (斜坡) so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.
The case has taken the international media by storm. Viewers watching this film sighed in relief. “I’m so glad. I understand not taking action directly, but a helping hand isn’t bothering, right?” viewer Kathryn Shaw said on her Facebook.
However, others think human interference (干涉) is unnatural. “You can’t have sunshine throughout your life. To have done anything else would only make matters worse.” said the show’s creator David Attenborough, according to TheTimes.
In this case, however, Mike Gunton, the executive producer of the series, said that this was a one-off situation. “There were no animals going to suffer by interfering. You weren’t touching the animals and it was just felt by doing this …They had the chance not to have to keep slipping down the slope.” he told the BBC.
Such cases are familiar to Paul Nicklen, wildlife photographer for National Geographic. He told Metro, “If it’s ever a predator (捕食者) situation, no matter how gut-wrenching, you stay out of the way. Even when you’re watching a male polar bear eat a baby bear.”
“There’s no rule book in those situations. You can only respond to the facts that are right there in front of you.” Will Lawson, the show’s director, told Daily Mail.

5 . Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) opened on October 24, 2018. It's the longest cross-sea bridge in the world. The bridge is 55 kilometers long. It connects Hong Kong and Macao to the Chinese mainland city of Zhuhai. Construction (建筑工程) on the HZMB began in 2009. It is considered as one of the “seven wonders (奇迹) of the modern world”.
The HZMB is the only one in many ways. It can withstand wind speeds of up to 185km/h and earthquakes with magnitude (震级) of up to 8. It's designed to have a service life (寿命) of 120 years, 20 years longer than most bridges.
And It' s not just a bridge, but also part tunnel (隧道) and part island. In one section (部分), the bridge turns into a 6.7-km undersea tunnel. And the tunnel passes through two man-made islands. The tunnel is the world's longest undersea tunnel for road traffic, allowing large ships to continue passing through the sea area above the tunnel.
The HZMB makes it more convenient to travel between the three areas. It can shorten (缩短) the traveling time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai. People used to spend four hours, but now it takes about 45 minutes.
By making local cities and areas closer together, the HZMB helps the areas' development. It can develop the economy (经济) of Hong Kong, Macao and nine Guangdong cities.

7 . My work started in 2003 at my local animal shelter’s Adoption Department. It seems like such a long time ago. In the 13 years that have passed, more than 50,000 animals have passed the doors of the shelter. Most of them, I do not remember. But occasionally there are animals who stand out. Tabby was one such animal.
Tabby was one of the many homeless dogs. What’s more, she was blind and deaf. Tabby’s chances at adoption seemed remote at best. But one day a woman named Loretta came to the shelter. Her son, Gary, who suffered from epilepsy (癫痫) had seen Tabby’s picture on the shelter’s website. They were interested in meeting her! Most boys would want a puppy, a dog who could grow with him and run through grassy fields on summer days. Tabby would never be able to do that. But as they say, "love is blind". After meeting her, they decided to adopt Tabby!
If Tabby’s story had simply ended with her successful adoption, it would still have been something very special indeed but it was what happened after her adoption that some might label as "magical" or perhaps even miraculous. As Gary and Tabby did everything together, they became so "in tune" with one another that Tabby began to telegraph Gary’s seizures (疾病发作) before they occurred, giving his family a warning that one was about to strike. What’s more, Gary seemed to be having fewer and fewer seizures since Tabby’s arrival.
How could it be? There are some things that happen in this world that challenge all logic and understanding. Sometimes, the best that we can do is to accept a miraculous thing, which we didn’t attempt to explain. Because when you try to explain it, you lose the beauty and wonder of it all.

8 . The new garbage sorting(分类)regulation has taken effect in Shanghai starting July 1. Many citizens are still confused about the classification of the four different types of trash. Thankfully, authorities have released an official guideline to explain the new rules.
The guideline, published by the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau, provides a rather clear definition on the four kinds of waste: recyclable waste, harmful waste, household food waste and residual(剩余的) waste.
Harmful waste, as the name suggests, includes various poisonous materials like used batteries, light bulbs, out-of-date medicines, paint and pesticides.
Household food waste—which is translated to “wet trash” in Chinese—refers to food leftovers, rotten food, pet food, fruit peels, remains of TCM herbs and flowers.
Paper, plastic, glass, metal and textiles(纺织品)are counted as recyclable waste.
The definition of residual waste is a little confusing. Anything that is not listed above belongs to this category.
As specific as the new guideline is, residents still have a hard time sorting trash correctly and are finding it challenging to memorize them all. For instance, both plastic bottles and bubble tea or coffee cups are plastic materials. However, the former falls the category of recyclable waste and the latter belongs to residual waste. To save the hassle(麻烦), some netizens have come up with their own way to sort trash.
“We should do this from a pig’s angle,” commented one netizen. “Those edible(可食用的)for pigs are household food waste. Those even pigs don’t want to eat are residual waste. If a pig consumes something and dies of it, then something must be harmful waste. Those that can be sold and the money we gain can be used to purchase pigs are recyclable waste.”
The new regulation came into effect on July 1. Those who do not sort their trash properly will be fined RMB 200.
1. What do the old coats that you want to throw away belong to?A.Harmful waste. | B.Wet trash. |

Woolly Monkeys spend most of their time high up in 150-foot-tall trees. That makes them difficult animals to count and to study. But cameras have provided valuable information and taken, as this book shows, amazing pictures. Experts now believe that Peru's lowland monkeys and the waste they produce are necessary to the survival of the rain forest.
Camp Panda: Helping Cubs Return to the Wild
By Catherine Thimmesh. Ages 10 to 12.
The giant panda is much-beloved in China, but in the past 40 years, at least half of its habitat has been destroyed. Camp Panda tells about efforts to reintroduce the giant pandas into the wild so that they might have a future. As part of the efforts, people wear panda costumes that smell like pandas while weighing and measuring the young pandas. They aren't supposed to get used to seeing and being around people, because people could pose a threat to them in the wild.

10 . The tools scientists use to study hurricanes change constantly. So though research has suggested the warming world would produce stronger hurricanes, it has been difficult to say that with certainty. A new paper, published online on May 18, proves its certainty-studying a period of 39 years, between 1979 and 2017. Normalizing their data in a certain way, the researchers found a clear trend: Storms are getting stronger in general, and major tropical cyclones(热带气旋) are coming more often
“The main difficulty we have in finding trends is that the data are collected using the latest technology at the time,” said James Kossin, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor. “Every year the data are a bit different than last year, and each new satellite has new tools and captures data in different ways, so in the end we have pieces of all the satellite data that have been woven together.”
To create a consistent record to work with, the researchers tried something new. They sanded the edges off their newer, sharper tropical cyclone images to fit an older standard: Images where each pixel( represents an area 5 miles by 5 miles. They also removed images from newer satellites that provide views of storms from angles unavailable in 1998. That left them with an extensive dataset of about 225, 000 similar-quality images of about 4,000 global tropical cyclones.
The researchers found that the chances of any given tropical cyclone becoming a hurricane have gone up, and that the likelihoods of major hurricanes have gone up by about 15%-with most of that increase happening in the last 19 years of the 39-year study period.
This paper on its own doesn't rule out the idea that the uptick in hurricanes isn't the result of some perfect coincidence of other trends, the researchers wrote. But it shows the increase is happening, precisely during the period of great warming.
