文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。本文主要讲了年轻的Ryan Honary发明了A I火灾探测器,降低了伤亡率。

1 . The world is lucky when our most brilliant minds choose to work for the common good. Young Ryan Honary is among one of the brilliant minds.

Shocked by the deaths in the 2018 Camp Fire, California’s frightening wildfire, Honary turned his attention to how to decrease future disasters. In 2019, Honary won a $10,000 prize in the Ignite Innovation Student Challenge for his early wildfire detection (检测) network, which provides app technology for firefighters. He was only in fifth grade at the time.

Turning 14 years old and going into the eighth grade this year, Honary is busy working in SensoRy AI, the company he set up. With the help of his father and a team of experts, the company has received a lot of attention.

Honary started creating websites when he was in third grade. He learned Python and JavaScript in a local after-school program. At the same time, he was interested in animals and the environment. He became worried as he saw how much the environment was under pressure.

When wildfires started ruining the air quality, destroying homes and killing some people, Honary thought about how AI can be used to solve environmental problems such as wildfires. In order to get data to train the machine learning models on his fire detectors, he collected real-world data from Google Earth about the Camp Fire of 2018 in California. Once a fire is detected by a fire detector, the information can be sent to the app he created. Also, machine learning can be used to predict where the fires are going.

Honary is hoping to attract more people from his generation to his company. He believes the environment is going to be a big responsibility for all of us.

2 . Heritage on the Edge

In an effort to preserve some of the world’s most famous landmarks,Google has announced a new project to transform a few of the most endangered by climate change into interactive 3D models, just in case one or all is irreparably(不能恢复地)damaged in the coming decades.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle comprises 27 buildings on top of an extinct volcano. It was home to many kings and queens. But old roofs and rainwater management systems will become insufficient as they will be unable to deal with the level of storm water associated with extreme weather events. Besides,if temperatures continue to rise, the rate of decay(腐烂)will increase further.

Kilwa Kisiwani

Kilwa Kisiwani was a regional center of the medieval trading civilization along the East African Coast. Its permanent architecture included ports,Muslim buildings, and the unique“stone houses”. However, the drier weather and subsequently heavy rainfall is threatening the stability of the ruins, causing the worsening of this exposed heritage site.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了法国已经改变了杂货店和市场的规则,从2022年1月1日开始,大多数新鲜水果和蔬菜不能再用塑料包装。

3 . France has changed the rules in its grocery stores and marketplaces. Starting on January 1, 2022, most fresh fruits and vegetables can no longer be packaged for salern plastic.

Under the new law, more than 30 types of fruits and vegetables must now be sold in materials that can be recycled. Potatoes, tomatoes, apples and carrots are some of the items included in the list. Plastic will still be allowed for packs that are over 1.5 kilograms. Smaller items such as raspberries and cherry tomatoes can still be sold in plastic for now, but the country plans to ban (禁止) all single-use plastic packaging for whole fruits and vegetables by 2026.

This ban on plastic packaging is part of a broader effort by France to control plastic waste across a range of sectors. Other efforts include preventing restaurants from including plastic toys in children’s meals, newspapers and magazines from being delivered in plastic, and tea bags being sold in plastic packages. Furthermore, public locations must provide water refill stations to disincentivize the use of single-use water bottles.

It’s believed that 37% of fresh fruits and vegetables are wrapped in plastic in France. The government says the new ban will stop one billion pieces of plastic from being used each year.

Not everyone is happy with the change. François Roch, president of the French fruit sellers’ federation, told Reuters, “Selling loose produce is complicated (复杂的) as many customers touch the fruit and people do not want their fruit to be touched by other customers.”

The ban will likely require a change in habits Shoppers will probably have to take their own reusable bags to fill and weigh. It will be interesting to see how France deals with the complications that come with selling loose produce, and whether other countries follow suit, once a precedent (先例) has been set.

1. What’s the purpose of the new ban?
A.To reduce plastic waste.B.To control overspending.
C.To recycle plastic products.D.To fight over-packaging.
2. What does the underlined word “disincentivize” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Ignore.B.Measure.C.Increase.D.Discourage.
3. How does François Roch feel about the new law?
A.Relaxed.B.Dissatisfied.C.Surprised.D.Interested.
4. What is a probable result of the ban according to the author?
A.More attention to a healthy lifestyle.B.A change in customers’ shopping habits.
C.Fewer tips to stores and supermarkets.D.A drop in the sale of fruits and vegetables.

文章大意:本文为一篇新闻报道。得益于一个名为PaRX的新项目,加拿大四个省份的医疗保健专业人员现在可以为患者开具国家公园通行证的处方,该项目有助于患者的身心健康,并有望在加拿大全国推行。

5 . Healthcare professionals in four Canadian provinces can now prescribe (开处方) their patients passes to National Parks thanks to a new program, PaRX, which stresses the health benefits of spending time in nature in helping to manage physical and mental health.

PaRx was founded by the B. C. Parks Foundation in November 2020 and was officially supported by Parks Canada last month. Health professionals who register (注册) with the program can offer their patients a Parks Canada Discovery Pass, making it the country’s “first national nature prescription program”. The Parks Discovery Pass typically costs about $57 per adult per year.

“We’re really asking doctors to prioritize patients who live close to Parks Canada sites so they’ll have more access and can make it part of their everyday lives, and also those for whom the cost of a pass might be a barrier to nature access,” said Melissa Lem, president-elect of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment.

Studies have shown that spending time in nature has a range of health benefits—from lowering blood pressure and improving heart health to reducing stress and anxiety. PaRx recommends that patients spend at least two hours per week in the great outdoors, and at least 20 minutes each time, to get the most benefit.

The program is currently available in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. It will eventually spread to every province.

PaRx also has benefits outside of the national parks, with many gardens offering free admission to visitors who show their prescriptions.

“There’s almost no medical condition that nature doesn’t make better. Rediscovering nature and then realizing how important it is to us has really shown that nature-health connection,” Lem said.

A.It is low priced.B.It is designed for poor families.
C.It is well received.D.It is owned by registered doctors.
2. What does PaRx plan to do about the program next?
A.Improve its service quality.B.Carry it out all over the country.
C.Do further research on its effect.D.Make it available free of charge.
3. What does Melissa Lem stress in the last paragraph?
A.Nature matters a great deal to our health.
B.Not all patients can get treated by doctors.
C.People should learn to change their lifestyle.
D.People should place health above everything.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Canadians Are Living in Harmony with Nature

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一种叫做ECHO的机器人,它可以监控企鹅,从而检测南极的气候变化。

6 . Among thousands of emperor penguins in Atka Bay, a yellow robot named ECHO quickly moves over the Antarctic environment and patiently observes the birds. The autonomous, remote-controlled robot is about three feet long and stands at eye level with the adult penguins. It monitors Southern Ocean ecosystems in real-time, year-round with small impact on wildlife.

ECHO was designed by the Marine Animal Remote Sensing Lab at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Scientists hope to use the robot as part of a 30-year project looking at the impact of climate change on the region. Since emperor penguins are among the top predators (捕食性动物) in the region, studying their populations can show the health of the Antarctic environment.

Scientists must physically catch penguins and put chips on their hacks to track them. But to gather data on the chips, scientists have to get close enough to the devices to scan (扫描) them, and sometimes, penguins are hard to locate, or the weather may be too terrible for humans to go out in the field.

ECHO removes these issues by acting as a mobile observatory that can monitor thousands of penguins each year. The robot can easily approach the penguins and scan the chips without introducing a harmful human footprint or affecting the birds. The robot is equipped with LIDAR, or light detection and ranging, and a 360-degree camera that can monitor penguins on large areas and uses an antenna (天线) to read each penguin’s chip.

While ECHO has only been tested for a year, researchers say the penguins do not seem to be afraid of it and don’t mind it when it comes near. When penguins gather in large groups during the wintertime, ECHO can steal in and scan penguins as they brave the elements. By tracking their behaviors over time, researchers can observe how penguins adapt and follow where they go to search for food. In turn, these data points can also determine the true size of protected areas of the sea.

1. Why do researchers monitor the penguins?
A.To further understand the food chain.
B.To protect the birds from being hunted.
C.To find out how the birds survive winters.
D.To learn about the Antarctic environment.
2. How do researchers get the information about the penguins?
A.By keeping a few of them.B.By visiting them often in person.
C.By attaching chips to them.D.By referring to previous findings.
3. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The advantages of the robot.B.The challenges of the project.
C.The population of the penguins.D.The environment of the region.
4. What can we infer about ECHO from the last paragraph?
A.It will be joined by more robots.B.Its work is going on smoothly.
C.It will be brought back before long.D.Its equipment requires updating.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了艺术家用回收品材料制作艺术品,并呼吁人们也参与其中。

7 . The Art of Recycling

Recycling is not new. Many civilizations have reused objects. However, recycling is more important today because there is more pollution and fewer natural resources.     1     Others use these recycled materials to make art!

2     Artists use old tires, pieces of metal, cloth, etc. These materials might come from yard sales or swap meets(旧物交换会). In addition, businesses might give used materials to artists.

3       For example, artists in New York City made a sculpture that looked like a giant white cloud. The sculpture, called “Head in the Clouds”, was more than 40 feet long and 15 feet high! People walked into the cloud sculpture and danced to live music.     4     That’s the number of water bottles that are thrown into the trash every hour in New York City! The artists wanted to show how many water bottles ended up in the garbage.

Many art projects are shown at outdoor art and music festivals. Many cities even have festivals specifically for recycled art.

Museums also exhibit recycled art. A museum in Texas allowed visitors to add to the art on display. The project was called the “Recycle Reef (珊瑚礁).” The background looked like an ocean reef, and people added to the “reef” with the recycled materials provided.       5

Have you made something using paper towel tubes or water bottles? If so, you’ve made recycled art.

A.Not all recycled art is big, though.
B.Almost anything can be recycled into art.
C.Recycled art often says something about our world.
D.They even recycled the exhibit after the show ended.
E.Some people might recycle cans and bottles at home.
F.Others bring home plastic and cardboard that can be recycled.
G.The artists used over 53, 000 recycled water bottles to make the cloud.

8 . Help Hermit Crabs

Hermit crabs are nature’s recyclers. They eat waste and help keep oceans and shores clean. Unlike other crabs, the hermit crab has a thin outer shell over its soft tail. This makes the hermit crab easy prey for hungry predators. Hermit crabs stay safe by living in old seashells. A hermit crab is picky; it tries on many shells until it finds one that fits just right. In recent years, however, many hermit crabs have had trouble finding their perfect homes. What is the problems There are not enough shells to go around!

One reason for the seashell shortage is that ocean water is not as clean as it once was. This has caused chemical changes to sea water. Some sea animals, like snails, are affected by these changes. Now there are fewer snails making shells. People visiting the beach often take shells home as souvenirs. This is another problem. Other people even take shells for their own pet hermit crabs! They do not realize that hermit crabs in the wild need those shells too.

Now people are working to solve this hermit crab housing shortage. They are teaching beach-Boers to leave seashells where they belong — at the seashore! Some people even make fake seashells that they hope the hermit crabs will like. For example, a group called Project Shelter invited people who visited their website to create different designs for hermit crab shells.

These designers had a lot to consider. What kind of material should be used to build a seashells. The material must be light enough for the hermit crab to carry, but strong enough to protect the crab from predators. The man-made shells could not contain glue or any other substance that might harm a hermit crab. Another challenge with building a hermit crab home was the opening to the shell. Too big would mean the crab would not feel safe. Too small would be uncomfortable, and the crab would not want to move in.

The Project Shelter shells are placed in the wild for hermit crabs to find. Lucky hermit crabs can move into these new dream homes.

1. Where can hermit crabs stay safe?
A.In different old seashells.B.Behind the waste they’ll eat.
C.In their own thin outer shells.D.Under the stones at the seashore.
2. According to the passage, what should be put in the webs?
A.The methods to recycle the wastes.B.The ways to help the hermit crabs.
C.The materials of seashells.D.The designs of websites.
3. What does the underlined word “fake” in Para. 3 mean?
A.man-madeB.perfectC.hardD.comfortable
4. What is the passage mainly about?

9 . Rescue workers and thousands of volunteers are not the only ones who have won hearts and minds for their heroic efforts in the search for survivors after Tuesday's powerful earthquake in

Mexico. Fifteen dogs from the navy's canine(军犬)unit have assisted this week in the rescue efforts at the sites of collapsed buildings across Mexico City, where more than 50 people have been pulled alive from the ruins.

Of the canine heroes none is more famous or loved than Frida, a six-year-old white Labrador who in her distinguished service has won praise for her ability to detect people who have been trapped by various natural disasters. Over her admirable career she has found 52 people including 12 survivors in Mexico and other Latin American countries.

This week, Frida and Evil and Echo—two Belgian Shepherds that have also been specially trained for rescue efforts一were sent to the site of the collapsed Enrique Rebsamen School in southern Mexico City.

Equipped with goggles that protect her eyes from dust and smoke, boots to prevent damage to her paws while she climbs over rough ruins, Frida took to her work looking every bit the part of the ruins.

If Frida detects the presence of a survivor, she is trained to bark to alert rescue workers but if she detects a corpse she stops suddenly before proceeding, her handler explained.

Eleven children were rescued from ruins at the school but this time human rescue workers rather than the dogs were the ones who located them.

However, that hasn't stopped Frida from becoming a social media star and reaching a new level of fame this week. Videos and other social media posts that highlight the work of Frida and her impressive record of detecting people trapped by natural disasters spread quickly online.

While she has yet to detect anyone trapped in the ruins this week, she and other rescue dogs are continuing to work tirelessly, searching through spaces that humans cannot reach. With the possibility that there are still people trapped alive, time will tell whether she adds to her rescue record.
