1 . Last week the electricity in my flat went out.    1     My typical evening is spent watching TV and scrolling (滚动) through social media. Tonight this wasn’t possible. My roommate and I weren’t prepared with candles and matches. We just rely on electricity.

So for me it was an early night,     2     That night, losing our electricity felt like losing a basic necessity, as basic as running water. But really, electricity is a luxury that we’ve grown to take for granted. I use electricity all the time, even when it’s not really necessary.

3     And as I’m writing this, I have my lights on, even in the middle of the day when I don’t really need them.

4    It contributes to global warming. It is harming our environment and we need to do what we can to stop it. Not only that, but if we continue to use the same large amount of energy, we will soon run out of it.

How would we survive in a world without electricity? Our daily lives go around it. We wouldn’t be able to function.     5    So, shouldn’t we start preparing for it now? Cutting down on our use of electricity would save energy resources so that they could last for longer. And if everyone does it, we can make a big difference.

A.Yet we know one day we will run out of it.
B.Our over-use of electricity is a big problem.
C.This left me in complete darkness the whole night.
D.It is a real problem to cut down on the use of electricity.
E.I know for sure I could cut down on my use of electricity.
F.I couldn’t help but think, do we rely too much on electricity?
G.I turn on the TV in the background even when Tm not watching it.

The problem of “white pollution” was caused by using plastic is becoming increasingly serious, on which plastic shopping bags play an important role. In China, about three billions plastic shopping bags are consumed every day, that results in a great waste of resources and heavy environmental pollution. Lucky, the government has put a nationwide ban on the use of free plastic bags, demand that no stores or supermarkets should provide customers with free plastic bags. The rule will undoubtedly reduce use of plastic bags or promote the awareness of environmental protection. It was highly suggested that everyone turns to cloth bags and shopping baskets.

3 . As warming continues, scientists warn the oxygen content of oceans across the planet could be more and more reduced, with serious consequences for the future of fish and other sea life.

1    One is the simple fact that as water gets warmer, it can hold less dissolved (溶解的) oxygen. The other reason is less obvious. The entire ocean gets its oxygen from the surface — either from the atmosphere, or from photosynthesizing algae floating at the top of the sea.     2

Global warming is expected to reduce the mixing of the ocean by making surface seawater lighter. That’s because in a warmer world we can expect more rainfall and more melting (融化) of glaciers, icebergs, and ice sheets.     3    The extra heat from the warming atmosphere will also make surface water expand and thus make it lighter still.     4    Instead, more of the oxygen will remain near the surface, where it will be used up by oxygen-breathing organisms.

A low-oxygen ocean may become an inescapable feature of our planet. A team of Danish researchers wondered how long oxygen levels would drop if we could somehow reduce our carbon dioxide emissions to zero by 2100. They determined that over the next few thousand years oxygen levels would continue to fall, until they declined by 30 percent. The oxygen would slowly return to the oceans, but even 100,000 years from now they will not have fully recovered.     5

A.It’s not known why the oxygen level of oceans has reduced.
B.Scientists point to two reasons to expect a drop in ocean oxygen.
C.Fresh water’s inpouring will make the water at the ocean’s surface lighter.
D.The oxygen then spreads to the deep ocean as the surface water slowly sinks.
E.Global warming has caused the reduction of the oxygen content of oceans worldwide.
F.The light surface water will be less likely to sink so the deep ocean will get less oxygen.
G.If they are right, we have every reason to worry about the major effect it has on sea life.

I’d like to tell you something about the problem of pollution we are facing to. As we know, the factory beside our school gives off heavy smoke all day long. Very loudly noises hurt our ears. Rubbish and waste were thrown here or there. It also sends out pollute water and poisonous gas. All this has done great harms to the health and study of the teachers and students. But after time goes by, little has done to change the situation. I don’t think you can study well before the problem is solved. We do hope if you’ll help and support us.

There used to be a factory near my house. The factory manager was blaming by the government because of the pollution had harmed people’s health. But even then, he paid not attention. Then the factory forced to stop production. The manager said angry, “Is there any fact that we had harmed people’s health yet? In fact, we haven’t.” Just then, a doctor came, with the result of a medical examine, saying the manager was suffering from cancer. This is very clear that the pollution has harmed not only other people’s health and also the manager himself. At last, he realized an importance of keeping the air clean.

9 . At 7:49 a.m. local time on Wednesday, April 14th, a huge earthquake struck Yushu County in Qinghai, China, described as “end of the earth” in a famous poem of the Tang Dynasty.
The earthquake destroyed many houses, cut off power and caused over 2,000 deaths and injuries. 10 . Doctors have known for a long time that extremely loud noises can cause hearing damage or loss. The noise can be the sound of a jet airplane or machines in factories of loud music or other common sound at home and at work. A person only needs to hear the noise for little more than one second to be affected.
An American scientist has found that using aspirin (阿斯匹林) increase the temporary (暂时的)hearing loss or damage from loud noise. He did an experiment using a number of students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them different amounts of aspirin for different periods of time, then he tested their hearing ability. He found that students who were given four grams of aspirin a day for two days suffered much greater temporary hearing loss than those who did not use aspirin. The hearing loss was about two times as great.
