文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了一对姐妹为了阻止人们扔掉烟头,保护环境而付出的努力及达到的效果。

3 . My sister Alice and I have been trying to get people to stop dropping cigarette butts (烟头) for seven years. One day, we were walking in our hometown and saw hundreds of cigarette butts on the ground. They made the town look so ugly that we decided to start a group to make people stop dropping butts. We called it “No Butts About It”.

At first, we drew pictures with “The Earth is not your ashtray (烟灰缸)” written on them. We put the pictures around our boomtown--in parks, by beaches, and along roads. We wanted to make people understand that dropping butts hurts the environment. Most smokers don’t think that dropping butts hurts the Earth. But it does, and all rubbish does!

Later, we wrote to companies and asked them for money to help us. We used the money to buy ashtrays to give to smokers. We wanted smokers to carry the ashtrays with them so they didn’t have to drop butts.

At the moment, we are trying to get cigarette companies to put an ashtray in each pack of cigarettes. Some companies want to do it. Many people have started to join our group since it began. Today there are 45 other “No Butts About It” groups in America

Now there are even groups in England, Australia, and India! Many newspapers have written about my sister and me over the last seven years. And we have won many prizes for what we have done. But we are not interested in prizes. We just want to make the Earth a better an cleaner place for animals, plants and people.

One day, it will be.

4 . Do you know how to prepare for and survive a major earthquake? According to Department of Conservation scientists, it is important to have the right answer to that question.

How to Be Prepared

Electricity, water, gas(煤气) and telephones may not be working after an earthquake. The police and fire departments are likely to be tied up. You should be prepared to fend for yourself for at least three days, preferably for a week. You’ll need food, water and so on. It’s also a good idea to decide ahead of time how and where your family will reunite if separated during a quake. You might choose an out-of-the-area friend or relative that family members can call to check on you.

If you’re indoors, stay there. Get under a desk or table. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you’re in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator. If you’re outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you. If you’re driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses.

After an Earthquake

Check for fire. If you smell gas, shut off the main gas valve(阀). If there’s sign of damage to electrical wiring, shut off the power at the control box. If the phone is working, only use it in case of emergency (紧急情况).Avoid driving if possible to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles. Be careful that things may fall out of cupboards when the door is opened, and also that chimneys can be weakened and fall with just a touch. Listen to the radio for important information and instructions. Remember that aftershocks, sometimes large enough to cause damage in their own right ,generally follow large quakes. If you leave home, leave a message telling your friends and family your location.

1. What is advised to do before an earthquake?
A.Making a date with your family the way of reuniting.
B.Preparing enough food for more than a week.
C.Making sure of your telephones in hand.
D.Calling your distant relatives to help.
2. What is the main idea of paragraph three?
A.Never drive when in earthquake.B.Keep calm when in earthquake.
C.Never run away when in earthquake.D.Do and don’t when in earthquake.
3. Why is asked to close the main valves and control boxes?
A.To reduce the resources.B.To avoid the possible fire.
C.To better the environment.D.To avoid the outbreak of earthquake.
4. What will we do after an earthquake?
A.It’s a good idea to drive to a safe place.B.Stay near a door to protect you.

6 . Trust me, you don’t want to get caught under a tsunami! Tsunamis are one of the world’s most powerful natural forces. They can cause huge amounts of damage.

But do you know exactly what a tsunami is? They are huge, powerful waves in the ocean that grow as they reach the shore. Most tsunamis are actually caused by earthquakes. An earthquake happens when a big piece of the Earth’s crust (地壳) suddenly moves. When the piece of ocean floor moves, it creates big holes. The water floods in to fill these holes. When the water moves that quickly, it creates a huge wave. This is how tsunamis are born!

Other natural disasters like landslides, volcanic eruptions, and glaciers breaking off can also cause tsunamis. Once the water starts moving because of the force of the disaster, large waves begin to spread. These waves can move very fast. They have been recorded at speeds from 400 up to 500 miles per hour! They can also move across very long distances.

At first, the waves of the tsunami may not seem that tall. That’s because when the waves travel through the deep parts of the ocean, the top of each wave is very short. But as that wave comes near to the coast, it grows in height. Remember, the tsunami travels quickly. If you are sitting on a beach, you may not see the wave coming at first. But when the wave arrives, it will be like a towering wall of water. Some waves are as tall as 100 feet high. The biggest tsunami ever recorded happened in 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska. The wave was over 1, 720 feet tall, and it wiped out trees, vegetation, and everything else in its way.

As frightening as tsunamis can be, you don’t need to worry too much about them. They don’t happen that often. Only about two tsunamis happen every year. And it is said that serious, really damaging tsunamis only happen about every fifteen years. So don’t worry.

1. According to the article, which natural disaster is not responsible for causing a tsunami?
A.Tornadoes.B.Volcanic eruptions.C.Earthquakes.D.Landslides.
2. If a tsunami forms in the deep ocean, 2, 000 miles off the coast of Sri Lanka, how long at least will it take the tsunami to reach the coast of SriLanka ?
A.1 hours.B.2 hours.C.4 hours.D.6 hours.
3. Which of the following about tsunami is TRUE?
A.The waves of the tsunami always move slowly over a long distance.
B.People on a ship in the deep ocean will notice a tsunami at once as soon as it forms.
C.If you are sitting on a beach, you must see the wave coming at first.
D.People will not notice a tsunami until it gets close to the coast.
4. Where would this passage most likely to be found?
A.In a music magazine.B.In a science newspaper.
C.In a travel guide.D.In a story book.

An underwater volcano eruption in Tongaon Saturday (Jan. 15, 2022) was captured as it happened in shocking images from an Earth — watching satellite, showing the great power for the explosive event in the South Pacific. The volcano eruption on the island of Hunga Tonga — Hunga Ha’apai is visible as a spectacular explosion in views from the GOES West Earth — observing satellite operated by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

A video of the eruption shows a vast mass of material from the volcano rising high into the atmosphere like a giant mushroom during the eruption as a shockwave extends outward from Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haapai, one of the 170 islands that make up the South Pacific kingdom of Tonga. The eruption spawned a 4-foot tsunami that hit Tonga’s capital of Nuku’alofa, which is about 40 miles south of the volcano. A deafening noise from the eruption was heard across the Pacific Ocean, reaching as far away as Alaska, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Nuku’alofa was covered in a film of volcanic dust, according to the AP. 文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了荷兰一个城市将成为世界上第一个禁止在公共场所投放肉类广告的城市,以减少消费和温室气体排放。

8 . A Dutch city will become the first in the world to ban meat advertisements from public spaces in an effort to reduce consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The ban also covers holiday flights, fossil fuels and cars that run on fossil fuels. The ban is delayed until 2024 due to existing contracts with companies that sell the products.

Haarlem, which lies to the west of Amsterdam and has a population of about 160,000,will bring the ban into effect from 2024 after meat was added to a list of products deemed to contribute to the climate crisis. Advertisements will not be allowed on Haarlem’s buses, shelters and screens in public spaces, prompting complaints from the meat sector that the government is “going too far in telling people what’s best for them”.

Recent studies suggest global food production is responsible for one-third of all planet-heating emissions, with the use of animals for meat accounting for twice the pollution of producing plant-based foods. Forests that absorb carbon dioxide are cut down for the food of animals while fertilisers used for growing their feed are rich in nitrogen(氮),which can contribute to air pollution, water pollution and climate change. Livestock also produces large quantities of methane(甲烷),a powerful greenhouse gas.

Zlggy Klazes,a councillor from the GroenLinks party, said she had not known the city would be the world’s first to enforce such a policy when she proposed it. She told the Haarlem105 radio channel:“We are not about what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen;if people want to continue eating meat, it’s fine. We can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and meanwhile, encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause. Of course, there are a lot of people who find the decision shocking and unreasonable, but there are also a lot of people who think it’s fine.”

1. What does the meat sector think of the ban?
A.Disapproving.
B.Neutral.
C.Indifferent.
D.Positive.
2. What do recent studies show?
A.Nitrogen is harmful to the environment.
B.Methane mainly comes from livestock.
C.Meat consumption causes more pollution.
D.People cut down trees for human habitation.
3. What message do Ziggy Klazes’s words convey?
A.She is the first to ban meat advertisement.
B.She is in favor of banning meat advertising.
C.She emphasizes the advantage of eating meat.
D.She cares about what people cook in the kitchen
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Fossil fuels are banned in Dutch city.
B.Dutch city decreases meat production.
C.Dutch city bans meat advertisements in public.
D.Greenhouse gas emissions are limited in Dutch city.

10 . When Jack, my husband, and I drove past a fire station with a sign reading, “Are you ready for the next storm?” Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees and outages. We were stuck in the dark and cut off from the outside world.

We have had our share of storms in the past — a snowstorm and other heavy snows that knocked down trees, sometimes up to a week at a time. Those days in a cold house weren’t fun, but we learned so much from those early storms, things that made later storms easier to bear.

Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We bought a battery-operated radio to keep up with the news. We stocked up on batteries so that we’d have plenty for extended power failures. We make sure our grill (烤架) is ready and its tank is full, and we purchase food that can be easily prepared and then cooked or heated on the grill. And we don’t forget to buy emergency chocolate! We have book lights to read in the dark. We keep our car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.

We’re ready for the next storm, but we wouldn’t have learned to do all those things if we hadn’t encountered a storm in the past. The same is true spiritually. Those little storms in our lives are never fun, but they prepare us for the big storms — the big trials — that will come our way. They can teach us some valuable lessons.

Are you ready for the next storm? Now is the time to get ready... not when the storm arrives.
