1 . In the UK you will see people wearing all kinds of clothing. School children usually wear a uniform until the age of 16. For older students, UK schools, colleges and universities are typically informal environments where you can choose what to wear.

For classes, students tend to wear casual clothes. Some courses require you to wear special clothing for health and safety. For example, if you are in a science laboratory, you may need to wear protective glasses and a white lab coat. Check with your course provider what you need and if you need to buy them yourself.

For parties and nights out, people dress in many different styles. If it's a more formal evening event, such as a university ball, this might mean wearing a dress or suit and tie. You can avoid the expense of buying formal wear by renting it from a local shop.

The weather in the UK is rarely extreme, but it can change quickly. In just one day, you might have warm sunshine, rain and cold wind. Wear several layers so you can put them on or take them off as the weather changes, and always carry an umbrella.

The UK is a multicultural place and it is common for people to wear clothing associated with their culture and religion, for example, a head scarf, kippah, turban, sari or long skirt. In major towns and cities, you will find special shops selling clothing from around the world, particularly Asian and Middle Eastern clothing.

Undoubtedly, Britain is a nation of hat wearers. From taking off hats     1     launching mortar boards(学位帽) in the air,   hats   have   long   been   associated   with   ceremonies and practices. Even the history of the country can     2    (tell) through hats.

The pork pie hat, starting in the mid-19th century, was the     5    (choose) for many welldressed Victorian citizens. 3 . One of the most recognizable symbols of Scotland is the kilt (百褶裙). Resembling knee-length skirts, kilts originated in the 16th century as a common form of clothing for men and boys living in an area of northern Scotland known as the Scottish Highlands. A special feature of kilts, even to this day, is the plaid (格子呢) patterns. These patterns were historically related to specific clans, which are family groups that share a relationship through ancestry or some other connections. Known as tartans (方格花纹), the plaid patterns are of various colors. Because of their popularity in the Scottish Highlands, the wearing of kilts and any tartan pattern in general was banned from 1746 to 1782 to try to control clans from that region that were opposed to the king at the time. After clans were no longer considered a threat to the king, the clothing ban was removed.

Although the removal of the ban meant people could once again wear kilts with their clan’s tartan, they did not become the regular dress of males there. Instead, they came to represent a traditional form of clothing, and be symbolic of national pride. Tartans of all types can be seen on show all over the world on April 6, Tartan Day, when people of Scottish ancestry celebrate their cultural treasure. Tartan Day originated in Canada in the mid-1980s. It spread to other communities of the Scottish diaspora in the 1990s.

Nowadays, tartans have been specifically created for individuals, families, institutions, and companies. Perhaps the best-known example of a tartan used by a company is that of the British company Burberry. Burberry has used tartans on a variety of products, including scarves, handbags, clothing, and other accessories. Although in 2019, Burberry announced it would reduce the number of products it produced to focus more on handbags as a way to increase profits, their iconic tartan continues to be a symbol of high fashion.

1. In which aspect are kilts special?
A.People show respect for the king by wearing them.B.They are of the same color in Scotland.
C.Plaid patterns are used in the kilts.D.They are designed for adult men.
2. Why do Scottish people exhibit different tartans in April?
A.To celebrate a tradition.B.To spread this culture to the world.
C.To honor the end of the ban on tartans.D.To express tartans shouldn’t be ignored.
3. Why does the author mention the company Burberry?
A.To prove the popularity of tartans.
B.To stress tartans’ wide range of daily uses.
C.To show the reduced number of tartan products.
D.To explain reasons for Burberry’s favoring tartans.
4. What is the best title for this passage?

There are several reasons why school uniforms are a good idea. First, uniforms help the school looks smart and the students feel that they belong to a particular group. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, somebody has to worry about fashion. Besides, uniforms can be great use in unexpected ways. A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform, on whose edge there is a piece of cloth given off light in the dark. When the children are walking and cycling to school on dark mornings, car drivers can see them without difficulty. Therefore, can uniforms help improve school performance? The answer still remains unclearly. One study in America found that students’ grades improve a bit after the school introduced uniforms. Other studies showed no connect between uniforms and school performance. Although school uniforms are traditional in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of them. But uniforms are still popular. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.

6 . To Wear or Not to Wear

After a strict head teacher in the U.K. sent 80 students home for uniform violations, the Guardian held a discussion about whether wearing school uniforms makes a difference.

School uniform is very important. It does improve my concentration, because it reminds me that   I’m at school to learn. But I’m not sure if that’s because I’m used to wearing uniform and associate my own   clothes   with free time.    1    If everyone is wearing the same clothes, it’s impossible to make fun of other people’s clothing. I don’t think this ignores a child’s need to express themselves.

-- David Hershman, a student at Stafford grammar school

2    Students should start school with no uniform. As they progress through the school, they start wearing it. I always think children need to be proud of their school, and uniform is important for that. So, make them earn it! If they let the school down, they shouldn’t be allowed to wear it. Look at the Marines(海军陆战队) they can’t wait to get that beret(贝雷帽).

--Tim Francis, a former teacher

I have had experience of teaching in both uniform and non-uniform schools. I can definitely see the benefits of students wearing uniform. Uniform can be important in creating a sense of school identity and community. It is often a source of collective pride for students.    3    Teaching students how to express themselves with confidence, rather than the length of their tie, should be the priority.

--Enayah Byramjee, an educational development director

In a perfect world, school uniform would not exist. Children would express their personalities through their clothes at school, just as they do at home. School wouldn’t impress on pupils the need to wear skirts to a certain length. We don’t live in a perfect world, however.    4

My house is often filled with uniform-wearing girls. The best thing about uniform, for me as a parent, is the simplicity.

--Joanna Moorhead, a mother of four

A.Uniform has to be seen as something that is earned.
B.School uniform is also a great tool to prevent bullying.
C.Some students complain that school uniform is monotonous.
D.In my experience, uniform helps schools maintain authority.
E.However, a school should not rely heavily on uniform regulation.

The type of clothing completely relies on the person wearing it and becomes a reflection of personal identity. Lately, the choice of clothing is     1     (important) than identification through the color of hair, skin and gender. As every piece of clothing carries a strong message about its owner, every owner “nests” a certain value in it depending     2     his mindset(心态) or today’s mood. 10 . The word “Kuitou” in Peking Opera is the technical term for various kinds of hats and headpieces worn by various characters in traditional Chinese opera. More than just meeting the requirements of acting, it also reveals an aspect of traditional Chinese culture.

In traditional Han Chinese culture, people believed that since, one’s whole body was a gift from one’s parents, it was important to avoid anything that might injure it, a principle that showed filial piety (孝道). Based on this ideology, males were required to let their hair grow long, and wearing hats became a rule of social etiquette in ancient times.

Since ancient Chinese society was divided into various social classes, people in each class wore different styles of clothes, but only the nobility were permitted to wear formal hats for adornment (装饰). People of lower classes could only wrap their head with a piece of cloth. Anyone under the age of 20 was also not allowed to wear formal hats and could only wear one after the performance of an official capping ceremony to mark their reaching of adulthood. As a result, various types of formal hats in ancient times, in addition to having value as a piece of personal adornment and social etiquette, also revealed the social classes of people and strict social divisions that existed between the nobility and common people.

In ancient times, people attached much importance to the kind of hat they wore. An old saying says, “A man of noble character would rather die than take off his hat.” The saying was based on the story of one of Confucius’s favorite students, Zi Lu, a man who was a brave warrior. Once while fighting in close hand-to-hand combat, his enemy opponent knocked off his hat. When he realized that his hat had been knocked off, Zi Lu placed down his weapon and said to the enemy soldier,” A nobleman can die, but my attire (服装) must be kept orderly.” But the moment he bent down to pick up his hat, the enemy soldier seized the opportunity and killed him. According to Zi Lu, his proper appearance, which included his hat, represented his dignity, and he would rather die than abandon his dignity. The formal hat culture of the Han Chinese continued up until the Ming Dynasty. Later after the Manchurians entered the Central Plains (满人入关), common people in society began to wear hats.
