6 . The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Double Fifth Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. It is a time for family reunions, dragon boat races, and the eating of zongzi (rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves).
The Origin of the Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival is said to commemorate the ancient poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the Miluo River during the Warring States period. People paddled dragon boats to search for his body and threw rice dumplings into the river to feed the fish, hoping to prevent them from eating Qu Yuan's body.
Festival Customs
Dragon Boat Races: The most exciting part of the festival is the dragon boat races. Teams of rowers compete in long, narrow boats painted with dragon heads and tails. The races are held on rivers and lakes, attracting crowds of spectators.
Eating Zongzi: Zongzi, made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, are a traditional food eaten during the festival. They can be filled with different ingredients such as red beans, dates, and meat. Eating zongzi is a way to remember Qu Yuan and his patriotism.
Wearing Sachets: Wearing sachets filled with herbs and spices is a custom that is believed to protect people from evil spirits and diseases.
Modern Challenges
However, with the rapid development of society and the popularity of Western festivals, some traditional customs of the Dragon Boat Festival are gradually being forgotten. Many young people are unaware of the significance and origins of the festival, and some even consider it just another holiday to have fun and relax.
Preserving the Tradition

9 . One out of three kids in our country are now considered obese (过度肥胖的) . Life is different now from when we grew up. The days of allowing our children to ride their bikes and play outside are nearly gone. With the average kid spending seven hours a day on all screen media combined (TV, videos, DVDs, computer time outside of schoolwork, and video games) , our children are not getting the minimum requirement of one hour of exercise per day that they need.
This needs to be changed, but where do we start?
We lead by example.
If you don’t work out, your children most likely won’t either. Children will mimic what you do more than they’ll ever listen to what you say. How many times have you thought, “My child is just like me?”
Many of us wait to have the perfect time to exercise, but we need to deliberately make the time. If necessary, exercising for 10 minutes three times a day is a great way to get started. After all, some activity is always better than none.
A great way to ensure that your whole family benefits from fitness activities is to do activities that your whole family can do together. You can take walks after dinner, play in the backyard, put on a Zumba video and dance with your kids, sign your children and yourself up for classes at the local gym, and hike, bike, and swim on the weekends.
I know you’re busy. But we all get the same 24 hours in a day, and we need to make them count. The excuse of “I don’t have enough time” is a very real one, but with awareness (意识) of our time management and planning, we can all do better. Organize your life, live by a schedule, and model the behavior you want to see in your children.

My dad is a helpful police off and I respect him very much. In his spare time, he likes volunteering to give lectures on law to the children in our community.
I remember my father took a special care of a family made up of a struggling single father, Jack, and his three sons. The elder boys seemed kind and understanding while the youngest boy, Tom, was naughty and wild. When helping Jack in life and work, my father always taught his children to obey the law.
During one visit, my dad and Jack had a deep conversation. During their talk, Jack expressed his concern about the future of his youngest boy, and said, “As we know, Tom is a clever boy, but he is too competitive. He always behaves badly at school. For some reason, he fought with his classmate again yesterday. I don’t know how to deal with him.” Obviously, he felt powerless to guide Tom. So, he asked for my father’s advice and ideas. “Will you allow your boy to leave the city for a few days? I want to take him to spend the summer with my son in the suburbs(郊区) of our hometown.” My dad offered the only solution he could think of on the spot. However, Jack agreed and was grateful to my father.
My dad decided that it would be good for Tom to see another side of family life, which he had never been experiencing. Then he discussed the plan with me. I couldn’t agree more.
When the summer vacation came, we had a new member, Tom, in our family. Although we seemed very unfamiliar to him, he had no trouble adapting to the new home environment. Amazingly, we found that he was an honest and open boy and got along well with the whole family. He seemed to like playing in the backyard and particularly enjoyed swimming in the pool. Wherever my father went, he took both of us with him. It wasn’t long before Tom and I became good friends. I felt so lucky to have him with me, and I even shared everything interesting with him.
