3 . A study showed that farms with surrounding natural habitat experienced the most benefits from birds. The study, published in Journal of Applied Ecology, was conducted at 21 strawberry fields along California’s Central Coast. It found that birds were more likely to carry foodborne pathogens (病原体) and eat more berries without surrounding natural habitat.
The study looked at how different farming practices influenced the costs and benefits that wild birds provided on the strawberry farms. The scientists combined nearly 300 bird surveys and the tests of more than 1,000 droppings’ samples from 55 bird species to determine which birds ate pests, beneficial insects and crops, and carried foodborne pathogens.
They also ranked birds to see which were more likely to bring benefits or costs to farmlands. Barn swallows, for instance, got a “gold star” in the study. Their mud nests are commonly seen attached to the underside of eaves (屋檐), from which they fly out to fields, searching for insects.
Rather than result in a list of “good” and “bad” birds, the study found that most bird species brought both costs and benefits to farms, depending on how the landscape was managed. The presence of natural habitat was the single most important driver differentiating a farm where wild birds brought more benefits than harm.
Growers will tell you it’s impossible to keep birds off your farm—you can’t do that and don't want to from a conservation perspective. “Nature is messy, and birds are complex,” the researcher said. “The best we can do is understand how to take advantage of the benefits while reducing the harm.”
A related study in 2020 found that farms with natural habitat attracted more insect-eating birds and fewer strawberry-eating birds. Such habitats also bring greater numbers of bird species to the landscape. All together, these studies suggest that farming landscapes with natural habitat tend to be good for conservation, farmers, and public health.

4 . Pizza genius isn’t too strong a term to describe Danny Rocca. At 23, he is the owner of Dough &. Co. Pizza, which opened in February. At the new store, a former Gino’s that he renovated (翻新) himself, you’ll find a menu that reflects a career that has occupied more than a third of his life.
With grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts in the pizza business, Rocca knew from a young age that he wanted to be a pizzaiolo. He applied for a job at Umberto’s in Plainview when he was 14 and got hired as soon as he turned 15.He started at the counter, reheating slices and ringing up customers. Then he advanced from dishwasher, to prep cook, to pizza man until, at the age of 19, he became the shop’s general manager.
Wanting to learn more about traditional pies, in 2021 Rocca moved to Huntington’s 1653 Pizza Company, where chef-partner Michael Vigliotti taught him about high-hydration doughs (高水面团) and high-end toppings. “When the Gino’s space came up,” he said, “I figured now is my time.” At Dough &. Co., Rocca takes a middle path between classic and traditional pizza. His regular dough has an unusual degree of hydration to “keep it light and airy”.
Rocca said he never gets bored of making pizza. “Every pie you make is unique,” he said. “The dough is a living organism. Then when it’s cooked and you cut into it and hear that crunch (碎裂声), it’s such a good feeling.”
He foresees a lifetime perfecting his craft.“I know this isn’t my last stop,” he said. “I’m so grateful to be here, but I’m going to continue to learn and grow.”

7 . With some 750,000 words and strange ways of spelling, English can be one of the most challenging languages to learn—especially if you hope to do so quickly. Though you can learn at your own pace, these tips can help you learn English quickly and effectively.
Taking an online course is a great way to learn English. You can choose the course based on your goal and present level. If you are hoping to learn conversational English for a coming trip, you can find a course that’s suitable for this goal. There are also courses for international business, writing and reading. Depending on your goal, taking a course that meets your goal can set you on the path to success.
Getting as much speaking practice as possible is necessary to quicker learning. If you’re just swiping (刷屏) through a few levels on a language-learning app at night, you’ll be shocked when you finally come face-to-face with an English speaker. Without communicating with others in English, you won’t be able to find your weak spots. Finding a conversation partner will allow you to put your skills to the test. Many people say that speaking English regularly helps it stick in your head far better than reading or writing. After all, what’s the point of learning a new language if not to use it to communicate?
It’s no doubt that there’s no better way to learn English than to live in an English-speaking country. If traveling to a country like the UK, Canada or the US isn’t in the cards at the moment, you can still immerse (使……沉浸) yourself in the language. One way to do this is by following the “two ways every day” method. How can you practise English in two different ways each day? Find TV shows, books, films, videos, apps—anything that is in English will do. When you eventually visit an English-speaking country, you’ll be amazed at how much background knowledge you have about not just the language, but the culture as well.

8 . Every child faces friendship problems at some time, in some way, but generally speaking, there are three main problems that keep children from being part of a group.
Kids who do too little in social situations could be ignored by the other kids and may have a hard time making friends. They are usually too shy and just wait for other kids to come to them.
Doing too much
We see this problem in kids who are always ready to cut in a talk or a game.
Some kids have trouble making friends because they behave in ways that set them apart from the other kids in the social groups. For example, they may always try to be funny on purpose, or have strange interests and habits.
Every child is unique, but they have to learn to connect with other kids in natural ways.
A.Talking too much |
B.Doing too little |
C.Being too different |
D.Kids make friends by doing fun things together |
E.The other kids may find their actions annoying |

9 . A study published by Whillans and her colleagues found that 48 percent of college freshmen in their second term at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver believed that their friends had made more friends than they had since school began. Thirty-one percent felt the opposite.
“Since social activities, like eating or studying with others, tend to happen in cafes and libraries where they are easily seen, students might overestimate (高估) how much their friends are socializing because they don’t see them eating and studying alone,” says Frances Chen, the study’s senior author and a professor in the UBC psychology department.
A second, smaller study they published at the same time shows that feeling left out made the students pretty unhappy. “This was surprising”, Whillans says, “because many high-achieving people—the ones most likely going to college—believe they’re better equipped than their peers (同龄人) to handle challenges. But when peers appear to be doing better socially, that can contribute to feelings that there’s something wrong with us.”
While this study did not look specially at the influence of social media, other studies have shown that the way people use social tools to present only the good side makes others feel lonely and separated. “Social media always gives us the idea that other people are more social than us,” Whillans says. “We often fail to communicate when we fail, and that might be bad for us and also for our social network.” In the new study, first-year students in the sample of more than 1,000 students reported having 3.63 close friends on average at UBC, but they believed their friends had 4. 15 close friends.
1. What did Whillans’ first study find?A.Less college freshmen feel lonely. |
B.Less college freshmen don’t like entering college. |
C.More students believe their friends are more sociable. |
D.More students think their friends’ school begins later. |
A.It is out of control. |

C.Many students can handle it. |
D.It leads to more social activities. |
A.students like being left alone |
B.students don’t like going to college |
C.students feel upset about being missed out |
D.students believe they’re better off than their friends |
