文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了美好生活的秘诀是什么。人生的目的不是生而快乐,而是生而有益。

5 . Ralph Emerson once said that the purpose of life is not to be happy, but to be useful, to be loving, to make some difference in the world. While we appreciate such words of wisdom, we seldom try to follow them in our lives.

Most people prefer to live a good life themselves, ignoring their responsibilities for the world. This narrow perception of a good life may provide short-term benefits, but is sure to lead to long-term ham and suffering. A good life based on comfort and luxury may eventually lead to more pain because we spoil our health and even our character, principles, ideals, and relationships.

What then, is the secret of a good life? A good life is a process, not a state of being: a direction, not a destination. We have to earn a good life by first serving others without any expectation in return because their happiness is the very source of our own happiness. More importantly, we must know ourselves inside out. Only when we examine ourselves deeply can we discover our abilities and recognize our limitations, and then work accordingly to create a better world.

The first requirement for a good life is having a loving heart. When we do certain right things merely as a duty, we find our job so tiresome that we’ll soon bum out. However, when we do that same job out of love, we not only enjoy what we do, but also do it with an effortless feeling.

However, love alone is insufficient to lead a good life. Love sometimes blinds us to the reality. Consequently, our good intentions may not lead to good results. To achieve desired outcome those who want to do good to others also need to equip themselves with accurate world knowledge. False knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance. If love is the engine of a car knowledge is the steering wheel(方向盘). If the engine lacks power, the car can’t move; if the driver loses control of the steering, a road accident probably occurs. Only with love in heart and the right knowledge in mind can we lead a good life.

With love and knowledge, we go all out to create a better world by doing good to others. When we see the impact of our good work on the world, we give meaning to our life and earn lasting joy and happiness.

1. What effect does the narrow perception of a good life have on us?
A.Making us simple-mindedB.Making us short-sighted.
C.Leading us onto a busy road.D.Keeping us from comfort and luxury.
2. According to the author, how can one gain true happiness?
A.Through maintaining good health.B.By going through pain and suffering.
C.By recognizing one’s abilities and limitations.D.Through offering help much needed by others.
3. In what case may good intentions fail to lead to desired results?
A.When we have wrong knowledge of the world.B.When our love for the world is insufficient.
C.When we are insensitive to dangers in life.D.When we stay blind to the reality.
4. According to Paragraph5, life can be made truly good when ______.
A.inspired by love and guided by knowledgeB.directed by love and pushed by knowledge
C.purified by love and enriched by knowledgeD.promoted by love and defined by knowledge

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了IEA对于全球电网系统需要进行重大改进以支持国际气候变化目标的呼吁。

7 . The International Energy Agency (IEA) says many world electrical grids (电网) will need major improvements to support international climate change goals. In a new report, the IEA calls on nations to invest in aging electrical grid systems. The Paris-based organization works with member governments to help them shape energy policies.

The IEA examined electricity grids in countries across the world to produce its report. The report found that, for the most part, electrical grid systems have not kept up with clean energy technologies like solar, wind, electric cars and heat pumps. One of the main findings is that to meet all national climate and energy goals, about 80 million kilometers of power lines will have to be added or replaced by 2040. The report noted that this amount is equal to the whole existing worldwide electricity grid.

The 2015 Paris climate agreement has set a goal to limit warming worldwide to 1.5 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times. Climate scientists believe the way to meet that goal is to reduce the use of greenhouse gases.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol spoke to reporters from The Associated Press about the report. He said there are many renewable energy projects waiting to connect to electricity systems. But currently, most grids are not equipped to work with the greener technology. If grid changes could be completed, the projects could produce about 1,500 gigawatts of power. This is about five times the amount of solar and wind capacity added worldwide last year. If investments do not increase, the chance of reaching the Paris agreements goal drops sharply.

However, The IEA notes that it is not uncommon for a single high-power overhead power line to take five to 13 years to get government approvals in developed economies. One project in Germany, first planned in 2014, was delayed after political opposition to an overhead line meant it was buried instead. Completion of the project is now expected in 2028 instead of 2022. Other important projects are delayed, including the 400-kilometer Bay of Biscay connector between Spain and France. Officials expect to finish the work in 2028 instead of 2025.

1. Why does IEA call on nations to improve electrical grids?
A.To invest in clean energy.B.To stop the use of greenhouse gases.
C.To develop clean energy technologies.D.To help achieve climate change goals.
2. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A.Grids improvement needs huge investments.
B.Energy technologies have developed fully.
C.Existing grids are too old to work.
D.Few countries pay attention to ageing grids.
3. What will the improvement of grids bring about?
A.Better green technologies.
B.More governments’ support.
C.Closer connection between countries.
D.Great increase in electricity production.
4. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.The delayed European projects.B.The completion of the projects.
C.The difficulties in improving grids.D.The development of electrical grids.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了宠物营养公司Royal Canin与盲人低视力新西兰组织合作,提供个性化营养支持导盲犬健康,提升盲人生活质量的故事。

10 . Guide dogs do an amazing job of being the eyes of people who are blind or have low eyesight. Just how amazing they can be is something Dan Shepherd likes to point out. As Blind Low Vision New Zealand’s (BLV) Head of Community Engagement, Shepherd often shares his experiences with his own guide dog, Ezra.

Their heartwarming story comes as pet nutrition (营养) company, Royal Canin, has announced a partnership with Blind Low Vision NZ to promote the nutrition and wellbeing of guide dogs. Dean Richardson, Manager at Royal Canin, says the company will provide high-quality nutrition personalised for the unique needs of guide dog puppies and trainees within the BLV programme. “We are excited to be on this beneficial journey,” he says. “This will help to improve the wellbeing of guide dogs and their handlers, eventually enabling more Blind Low Vision individuals to lead satisfactory lives.”

Shepherd couldn’t imagine life without Ezra. “Ezra not only keeps me mobile and safe, but does a huge amount for my confidence and independence.” While Ezra’s job is to make life easier for him, Shepherd also has a responsibility to make sure Ezra is in tip-top condition so he can maintain the high levels of concentration and fitness needed to do his job. That means having regular checks and vaccinations (接种疫苗), getting plenty of exercise and feeding him a nutritious diet.

“Royal Canin’s approach to puppy nutrition addresses the specific needs of guide dog puppies during their key growth periods. Their diets are carefully made to provide essential nutrients for healthy development,” says Richardson. “It’s the same as with humans.
