1 . A Westview High School student Kara Fan was named “America’s Top Young Scientist” by 3M for creating a liquid (液体) bandage last October.

The prizes of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge included $25,000 that Kara Fan can spend however she wishes —she said it would likely be saved for college — plus a family trip to New York City.

A traditional bandage is a thin piece of cloth which you tie around a wound. But Fan’s new creation is liquid. She used lemon leaf, a polymer (聚合物) and silver nitrate (which is often used to treat wounds and burns on the skin). Silver nitrate also plays a key role in her invention: it creates a thin layer to protect a wound while killing harmful bacteria (细菌).

From around 1,000 young scientists nationwide who offered videos of their work, 3M made the top 10 finalists known publicly. The finalists traveled to Minnesota for the three-day competition finals. Fan said they first paired up to compete in a few challenges that showed how well they worked with others. On the final day they gave a five-minute speech, followed by a five-minute question and answer meeting on their work that was supposed to solve a global problem — drug-resistance. This is a global antibiotics (抗生素) problem.

Fan said her attention was drawn to these drugs a few years ago, when her grandmother became very ill and was “saved by antibiotics”.

“Our communities want science to solve the world’s hardest challenges. This year’s finalists have truly encouraged us to solve real-world problems,” said Denise Rutherford, senior vice-president of corporate affairs at 3M. “We believe they will do more on their continued journey.”

Fan has a great interest in science, which Fan said she found to be “fun.” She is now interested in becoming a doctor because of her interest in biology.

1. When can Fan’s invention be used?
A.When people need clean liquid.
B.When people want to clean cloth.
C.When antibiotics need to be tested.
D.When simple medical treatment is needed.
2. What did the finalists do during the first two days in Minnesota?
A.They discussed serious global problems.
B.They gave a short talk to a group of people.
C.They entered competitions through teamwork.
D.They asked and answered questions in a meeting.
3. Which of the following excited Fan’s interest in antibiotics?
A.Science in labs.
B.Her biology courses.
C.Her grandmother’s illness.
D.A family trip to New York City.
4. What did Rutherford express in Paragraph 6?
A.Her praise for the finalists’ achievements.
B.Her strong will to solve real-world problems.
C.Her worry about science communities’ future.
D.Her support for science leaders around the world.

3 . Born into poverty on 21 May 1799, Mary Anning had to work hard from a young age. Her parents had 10 children, of whom only two survived childhood --- Mary and her elder brother Joseph. Mary’s own survival was said by her parents to be a wonder. At the age of 15 months, a sudden rainstorm hit the shelter, where Mary, her babysitter, and two children stayed. A lightning strike killed them all except Mary.

She didn’t have formal education and was only taught to read at a Sunday school. Raised in the seaside holiday village of Lyme Regis in Dorset, Mary and Joseph made a living by selling fossils to holidaymakers at their father’s waterfront booth.

Her life changed in 1811 when Joseph noticed bones mixed together with rock. Unknown to them, this was the first ever discovery of an ichthyosaurus ( 鱼 龙 ), a marine lizard from the Triassic period. Anning noted down every find she made, and after failing to find any new fossils for over a year, in 1821 she made her next discovery, digging up three more ichthyosaur skeletons. This was followed two years later by an even more impressive find --- a complete plesiosaur(蛇颈龙). This was so extraordinary that many leading scientists declared it a counterfeit, unwilling to believe that an uneducated 24-year-old could find such remarkable remains. Additionally, society at the time was highly religious and many rejected these discoveries as they conflicted with the teachings of the Bible.

Despite the setback, Anning continued to make more shocking revelations. Anning also dug up fossilized shit, which made experts know the diets of prehistoric creatures. But her biggest find of all was the first complete skeleton of a pterosaur in 1828.

All of Mary Anning’s discoveries helped influence the study of paleontology(古生物学) as scientists began to take an increased interest in fossilized animals and plants. Her work also encouraged people to question the history of the Earth in more detail and encouraged girls and those from poor backgrounds by proving that they could succeed in scientific study, a profession mainly controlled by wealthy upper-class men.

1. What can we learn about Mary Anning from the first two paragraphs?
A.It was not easy for her to survive.
B.She didn’t experience the lightning strike.

3. Anning’s findings of fossilized shit helped ________.
A.her get international fame
B.make her become more professional
C.experts better understand prehistoric creatures
D.convince the leading scientists of her discovery
4. The last paragraph mainly wants to show ________.
A.the process of her findings
B.the significance of her discoveries
C.the discoveries of fossilized animals
D.the background of her scientific study

4 . Experts using a high-tech laser scanner (激光扫描仪) have discovered thousands of ancient Maya buildings hidden under the thick forests of northern Guatemala, officials said Thursday. Some 60, 000 buildings were found over the past two years in a scan of an area in the northern department of El Peten between Mexico and Belize, said Marcello Canuto, one of the projects’ lead researchers.

These findings are a “breakthrough in Maya archeology(考古),” Canuto said.

The new discoveries in this Central American country include city centers with sidewalks, homes, wide steps, farming facilities and so on, said Canuto, an archaeologist at Tulane University in the United States.

Among the finds was a 30-meter high pyramid (金字塔) that had been earlier recognized as a natural hill in Tikal. Also discovered in Tikal: a series of holes and a 14 kilometer-long wall.

The Maya development reached its height in what is present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, and parts of Belize, El Salvador and Honduras between 250 and 950 CE. Researchers now believe that the Maya had a population of 10 million, which is “much higher” than previous judgment, Canuto said.

The project depended on a remote (远程的) sensing method known as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). Aircraft with a LiDAR scanner produced 3D maps of the surface by using light in the form of laser linked to a GPS system.

The technology helped researchers discover sites much faster than using traditional archeological methods. “Now it is no longer necessary to cut through the jungle to see what’s under it,” said Canuto.

Details of the research will appear in a documentary to air on February 11 on the National Geographic TV channel, said Minister of Culture and Sports Jose Luis Chea.

1. What did Canuto think of the new discoveries in the past two years?

B.It is more convenient for researchers to work in forest.
C.Explorers have to go deep into the jungle to research.
D.Research can be done at a distance.
3. According to the new discoveries, Maya might have been a nation________.
A.that lay in AfricaB.that was less developed
C.whose pyramid was made of a hillD.with a surprisingly large population
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To inform readers of the new discoveries about Maya.
B.To introduce a new method used to discover Maya buildings.
C.To show Maya development was of great influence.
D.To tell us a new documentary will be launched on TV in Feb.

5 . Yangzhou paper cutting, with a history of 2,000 years, can be dated back to the Sui Dynasty, making Yangzhou one of the places where paper cutting first became popular.

In the Sui Dynasty, the people of Yangzhou would cut colourful paper or silk and satin (缎子) to celebrate festivals. It is said that Emperor Yang came to Yangzhou three times. In winter, the flowers and trees in the garden became dry and weak. 6 . Earlier today, Spotify announced it would be sharing news at an April 24th event. It’s unclear whether the company is planning to show hardware later this month in New York City, but evidence suggests that Spotify has been working on an in-car controller — or even a standalone player — for the streaming service that would allow drivers to control music playback with their voice.

Back in February, several Spotify customers reported that they received an offer inside the app for a new device that would come included as part of a $12.99-per-month subscription(订阅费). That price would cover both Spotify’s music service and the device itself if users agreed to a 12-month commitment totaling $155.

Another user claimed that Spotify showed them a different $14.99 price point and advertised support for Amazon’s Alexa assistant. For some, Spotify detailed built-in 4G mobile data so that the device could function independently of a smartphone. In every case where it appeared, the prompt(提示) only came up once and never returned. Sightings of it basically disappeared after February. Still, the number of people who received this message tells me that the image was acceptable and was accidentally sent out far ahead of schedule by Spotify. There’s nothing to suggest it will launch at this month’s event, however.

Outside of Reddit, the device has been mentioned on Spotify’s support forums(论坛) but drew little attention, with forum administrators dismissing it as a test. “We’re always testing things to improve Spotify,” is the usual response line. “Right now we don’t have any news on this, but we’ve let the right team know it’s something you’d like to see,” a moderator wrote in response to another thread on the subject.

1. What do you think Spotify is?
A.A personB.A company
C.A forumD.An app
2. What kind of new service does Spotify provide to its customs?
A.information serviceB.forums service
C.music serviceD.car service
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Customs really like Spotify’s service.
B.The price that Spotify showed is very cheap.
C.Spotify will launch its service soon at an April 24th event.
D.Spotify will allow drivers to control music play with their voice.
4. According to the last paragraph, Spotify sent these offers to many customs to ________
A.test things to improve its device and apps.
B.sell more products to its customs.
C.get more attention on its support forums.
D.let the right team know the right price.

9 . Legend(传说) says that soap was first discovered on Sappo Hill in Rome. According to legend, a group of Roman women were washing their clothes in the River Tiber at the base of a hill. Then some fat from the dead animals ran down into the river.     1     The women soon found that using that thing made the clothes easier to wash.

2     The evidence for this is Babylonian boxes dated at around 2800 B. C. Words on the boxes present the earliest known written soap recipe, which show how the product was made. They show the product was made from fat combined with wood ash(灰) and water.

3     The Ebers Papyrus shows that ancient Egyptians combined both animal and vegetable oils with salts to produce a soap—like thing. According to Pliny the Elder, the Phoenicians made soap from goats’ fat and wood ash in 600 B. C.

Pompeii was one of the cities destroyed by the volcanic eruption (火山爆发)of Mt. Vesuvius in its ruins. The discovery suggests that the industry was started.     4     This is a big discovery for us to study the history of soap.

During the early century of the Common Era, although the Romans were well known for their public baths, generally soap was not used for personal cleaning; it was used for the treatment of disease.     5

A.It formed something like soap.
B.We can say soap was really important in history.
C.So soap wasn't necessarily used for body cleaning then.
D.Early Romans began to make soap in the first century A. D.
E.Some other countries are also thought to have created soap.
F.Also, it suggests that soap was widely known in the Roman Empire.
G.However, the ancient Babylonians were the ones who invented soap.
