1 . I always dreamed of studying abroad, to learn at a world-class university while further exploring the grounds on which these nations achieved new milestones of development with each passing day.
To study abroad after my graduation, I could not stop seeking my dream. To take the first step, I did some brainstorming and explored opportunities on the Internet and finally decided to go to China. There were a number of reasons behind it—its advanced education system and thousands of centuries of rich culture inspired me to study there. The primary one was my curiosity how a nation has left many nations behind in a short time at its fast pace of development.
So just like that, I applied, along with some of my friends, for a master’s degree program at Communication University of China. I was the only one who got selected in the said program and in addition, the Chinese Scholarship Council sponsored all of my expenses. This good news was welcomed by my family.
This is my seventh month in Beijing. In my experience so far, one thing that appeared to be missing was the internship (实习) which I tried to find because I want to work here after completion of my studies. After some struggles I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work as an int ern with the Center for China and Globalization(CCG). It’s very exciting to work on their team as a researcher. Now I can proudly say that my decision to choose China as a study destination was the best decision I have ever made.

Whether you travel by plane, car, train, or boat, if you’ve experienced motion sickness, you know how easily it can make your trip unpleasant.
Eat small meals
It can be appealing to fill up before you travel to avoid eating packaged food on board.
Be aware of situations that cause symptoms
Do you get sick when you’re riding in the second or third row of an SUV? Are you OK on a train, but tend to feel sick on buses? Knowing what causes your sickness can help you avoid them.
For travel by boat, car, train, or bus, looking toward the horizon may help prevent motion sickness. In a study, for instance, looking at the horizon while at sea reduced body sway (摇摆) (people who suffer from motion sickness tend to have more body sway while standing). If you are on a boat, moving your feet wider apart may also reduce body sway.
Avoid reading or computer work during the journey
It may be appealing to catch up on work or sink into a good book, but reading or using a device like a computer or a tablet should be avoided. The balance center in your inner ear senses movement, but the words on the screen or page are still.
A.In a car or bus, for instance, sitting toward the front may help. |
B.Try to sway your body lightly. |
C.These mixed messages can result in sickness. |
D.Don’t eat a heavy meal before traveling. |
E.Motion sickness can bring on dizziness, sweaty hands, uneasiness, or throwing up. |
F.Look at the horizon. |
G.But doctors recommend eating smaller, more frequent meals. |
7 . When I was a little girl, a couple in our community went through a tragedy. They lost a young child and were in deep despair. Shortly afterward, my mother ran into the father at the local supermarket. He turned to my mother and said, “Your husband saved our life. He was the one more than anyone else who helped us get through this incredible loss.”
My mother wanted to know what message of solace was given to lift them from the depths of despair. So back at home, she asked my father about their conversation numerous times, but my father insisted that he had said nothing.
A few weeks later the couple came over to our home. After sitting down for a few minutes, my mother gently said, “You told me that my husband helped you the most when you went through your awful sadness. What did he say?”
The man paused. He then gave the secret of my father’s consolation (慰藉).
“Rebbetzin, your husband did not say one word. He just came over to our home and walked over to me without saying anything. And then he reached over to me, took my hands into his and hugged me. I looked up and saw tears falling from his eyes. You cannot imagine what that felt like. Your husband felt my pain. I was not sitting alone with my suffering.”
My mother was quiet, absorbing the message this man was giving.
“No, your husband did not speak. I didn’t need him to give me words. I needed his heart and soul.”
When I recall this story, I realize the truth.
When having someone in our lives who is going through difficulty, we are often at a loss. What do we say? How do we make it all better? What is the greatest gift we can give to our loved ones?
We tend to think that we must fill space with words. But when you want to give of yourself, give a listening heart. Sometimes a person in pain needs you to stay silent. Just show that you are there for them. Perhaps you can’t fix anything or take away the pain, but you can feel it. With the silence comes sympathy, understanding and empathy (共鸣). And you share the load.

The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25th. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses’ station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day, for people were supposed to be spending time with their families, exchanging gifts and wishes.
I was guiding nurse that day and had just done clean-up in the waiting room. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I returned to the nurses’ station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas. Just then, a colleague came back and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I was surprised, “Five, how did I get five; I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room.”
“Well, there are five signed in.”
So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk, a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.
“Are you all sick?” I asked suspiciously.
“Yes,” she said weakly and lowered her head.
“Okay,” I replied, unconvinced, “Who’s first?” One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the descriptions of their symptoms, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren’t accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn away any patient, so we would see them. When I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because there were several more critical patients. She responded, “Take your time; it’s warm in here and there is a Christmas tree.”

10 . For most people traveling abroad, their first choice is probably to rush directly to tourist sights. For me. I find lots of joy in grocery shopping on holiday.
As a vegetarian, finding restaurants that meet my needs is not always easy abroad.
The variety of foods attracts me every time I travel somewhere new. In Malta, I found the most delicious chocolate-filled cakes, the ones I would struggle to find even in the UK.
Grocery shopping on holiday sounds unusual. But it means being involved in the day-to-day lives of a country’s citizens. I can pretend I am a local and put myself in their shoes. I can watch kids begging their parents for sweets, an international experience that needs no language, or watch couples pick up snacks and drinks for a party on a Friday night.
A.I ended up eating these every day for breakfast. |
B.The challenge of finding food is interesting. too. |
C.The smoked product is unique and specially packed. |
D.So I always make sure to book a place with a kitchen. |
E.It’s an act of understanding people as much as of buying food. |

G.By wandering around in a new country, I start to see what they value. |
