文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要讲的是作者通过Poetry Out Loud教学生的几年里观察到的学生学习的方法。

1 . When high school students spend time memorizing and reciting a poem, they develop confidence by engaging deeply with language. Here are my five Cs — things I’ve observed from several years of teaching students through Poetry Out Loud, from selecting a poem to performing at the state competition.

1     This is the first step of the exercise. Students learn how to search for poems, and they have complete discretion over the poem they will perform. Students often gravitate to poems that fit their reading level and also match a personal interest or philosophy, which is great. But there are also lots of unexpected mismatches that end up stretching students’ skills in ways a teacher could not work out.

Concrete learning task. Learning just one poem well gives students a finite and concentrated experience with language. And every student can learn one poem. I’ve seen students with all manner of challenges get up and do something they thought was impossible,     2

Continuing learning. Students learn a poem that will likely stay with them for years, if not forever. Poems contain mysteries and complexities that reveal themselves slowly — and sometimes even suddenly — over time.     3

Confidence.     4     All students need to be able to speak effectively in front of others. Performing a poem is a bit like acting. Students learn elements of physical presence, voice, speed, volume, and tone without having to present their own work, which is more frightening for most students.

Challenging memory and recall. Students are not asked to memorize much anymore, yet many of them take pleasure in the act of repetition and remembering.     5     For English language learners, many autistic students, and other exceptional learners, reciting poetry is an especially powerful way to understand language and build confidence. For our kids who need small victories, mastering one poem is a welcome relief.

A.Chance.
B.Choice.
C.so you can rely on it that you can recite poems.
D.Therefore, it is a lasting course to learn poems.
E.in large part because it involves a single, repeated exercise.
F.Recitation is the perfect introduction to public speaking skills.
G.They like testing themselves and realizing that they can in fact recall lines.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要是讲科学家们发现人类在全球制造了数量惊人的塑料,我们正“迅速走向‘塑料星球’”,这正在造成严重的污染。文章对此进行了介绍。

3 . Scientists have calculated the total amount of plastic ever made: 8.3 billion tons. Looked at another way, that’s as heavy as 25, 000 Empire State Buildings or one billion elephants. And incredibly, almost all of it has been made in the last 65 years.

______ Much plastic is in the form of packaging which is used just once and then thrown away. According to a major new study from the University of California, 9% of this is recycled, 12% is completely burnt and 79% goes to landfill. And because most plastic is not easily disposed of, once it’s in the ground, it stays there.

It’s a situation that has led the paper’s lead author, ecologist Dr. Roland Geyer, to say that we are “rapidly heading towards ‘Planet Plastic’”. The team behind this report also estimate that eight million tons of plastic waste are escaping into the sea every year. This has caused concern that plastic is entering the food chain, through fish and other sea life which swallow the smaller fragments.

Of course, the reason why there’s so much plastic around is that it’s an amazingly useful material. It’s durable and adaptable, and is used for everything from yoghurt pots to spaceships. But it’s exactly this quality that makes it a problem. The only way to destroy plastic is to heat or burn it — although this has the side effect of harmful emissions.

So what’s the alternative, other than using less plastic? Oceanographer Dr. Erik van Sebille from Utrecht University says we’re facing a “tsunami” of plastic waste, and that the global waste industry needs to “get its act together”.

Professor Richard Thompson, a marine biologist from Plymouth University, says it’s poor design that’s at fault. He says that if products are currently designed “with recyclability in mind”, they could be recycled around 20 times over.

1. Which of the following is the best topic sentence for paragraph two?
A.So where does the plastic go?
B.So why is much plastic thrown away?
C.So what’s the problem?
D.So how is the plastic disposed of?
2. How might plastic enter the food we eat?
A.By being eaten and absorbed by sea creatures.B.By being used as useful materials.
C.By getting into the food market directly.D.By getting into the deep sea.
3. Which of the following might Richard Thompson agree with?
A.Plastic waste has caused tsunami.
B.The design of products should be environmentally friendly.
C.Plastics are currently recycled over 20 times.
D.Global waste industry is to blame for the plastic waste problem.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Global Waste IndustryB.Recyclability of Plastics
C.Planet PlasticD.Plastic Waste into the Sea

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了中国传统滋补品的现状,功效以及滋补品对现代餐饮业的影响。

4 . Chinese food is well received by the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.

Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.

The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry (枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.

So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.

1. What is the present situation of tonic food?
A.It is catching less attention.B.It is enjoyed by many young people.
C.It is well-known worldwide.D.It is becoming increasingly popular.
2. What is believed to benefit new mothers?
A.Chinese cabbage.B.Fruit tea.
C.Fish soup.D.Sesame oil hot pot.
3. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A.Medicine.B.Restaurant.
C.Manufacture.D.Agriculture.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Charm of Chinese Cuisine
B.The Popularity of Tonic Food
C.An Introduction of Chinese Tonic Food
D.Differences Between Hot Food and Cold Food

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了2022年主题为“变化世界中老年人的复原力”的联合国国际老年人日(UNIDOP)的相关内容。

5 . Today, the world celebrates the United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP) under the theme “Resilience (复原力) of Older Persons in a Changing World”.

The number of older persons worldwide is projected to reach more than 1.5 billion in 2050. All regions will see an increase in the size of the older population between 2022 and 2050. Less developed countries excluding the least developed countries will be home to more than two-thirds of the world’s older population (1.1 billion) in 2050. Yet the fastest increase is projected to take place in the least developed countries, where the number of people aged 65 or over could rise from 37 million in 2019 to 120 million in 2050 (about 225%).

As to the “Silver Generation”, all countries have to bear increased pension (养老金) and healthcare costs as people live longer. But including the elderly in a productive way in the national economy has become a major problem for many countries. Many young families also struggle to care for their elderly parents or give it up altogether. Meanwhile, though older persons continue to meaningfully contribute to their political, economic, social and cultural lives, their contributions and experience are largely ignored.

The 2022 theme of UNIDOP serves as a fillip, something that jogs your memory and makes you think about the significant role older people play in taking up global challenges and contributing to their solutions. UNIDOP 2022 is also a call for action and opportunity to hear older persons’ voices and show their resilience and contributions in society.

Age is just a number and only a state of mind. Indeed, what matters is ageing elegantly, accompanied by good health. It is meaningless to live to 85 or 90 if one is limited to bed, unable to move around. But this could be a thing of the past in the light of rapid medical advances, which will give mobility and a new life to the elderly. I believe there will come a time when one’s actual age doesn’t really matter anymore in both a physical and mental sense.

1. Why are the figures used in paragraph 2?
A.To clarify the gap between rich and poor.
B.To show the growth in the older population.
C.To explain the correctness of the UN statistics.
D.To analyze the reasons for population ageing.
2. What does the author say about the “Silver Generation”?
A.It is a double-edged sword.
B.It is a force to be treated seriously.
C.It is a huge burden to young families.
D.It is a by-product of the economic development.
3. Which word is closest in meaning to “fillip” underlined in paragraph 4?
A.Reference.B.Guideline.C.Reminder.D.Platform.
4. What is the author’s understanding of age?
A.Age affects both physical and mental health.
B.Age is not a number but a mental state.
C.Age does not matter in the medical field.
D.Age pales by comparison with health.
