1 . A Thief in the Night

James worked as a mechanic in a garage located in the centre of NewYork City. One day, When he finished his work, it was already very late and the last bus had gone. So James had to walk home. In order to get home quicker, he decided to take a shortcut through Central Park. It was dark and there were very few people in the park. James hardly met any one on the path he was taking. Naturally he had some fear. Robbery and murder were often reported in the neighbourhood. But James had no other choice.

Then somewhere in the middle of his path, James saw someone coming towards him from the opposite direction. He could not see the stranger clearly but he could tell it was a man of average build, just like himself. His fear began to grow. He tried not to look at the stranger and decided to veer so as to avoid him But when he veered, the stranger veered too. Unfortunately they veered in the same direction and bumped in passing.

When the stranger had gone, James was a little relieved. However, a few minutes later, James had a feeling that the bumping could hardly have been an accident. Why did the stranger veer in the same direction as me? He recalled newspaper reports that thieves pretended to bump into people and picked their pockets. With this thought, James felt for his wallet in his pocket. It was gone.

James had no doubt that the stranger was a thief and had taken his wallet. Anger made him turn around. He caught up with the stranger and bravely demanded his wallet. The man gave it to him and went away.

When James got home, the first thing he saw was his wallet lying on the bed. There was no way to avoid the truth: He had robbed somebody.

文章大意:本文是新闻报道。文章主要介绍部落社区不是在衰落,而是在转型。

3 . A vague image shows a nearly naked man in a vast field of rainforest, spear held up to the sky and pointed at the helicopter circling above him—a man defending his homeland and people from outside influence.

This very scene made front-page news some years ago in the UK. It instantly highlighted the loss of ancestral homelands some tribal communities face as a result of ever-expanding plantations. However, bad news has a way of hitting the headlines, so we’re of the opinion that all aboriginal communities are in decline-and that’s not true.

During my travels through India, Afghanistan and Pakistan in the early nineties, I spent some time living with the Kalash, a tribe that inhabits three valleys in the Hindu Kush mountain range. I became firm friends with Saifullah, the chief spokesperson, and we’re still in touch to this day.

Back then I remember talking to a very serious aid worker in the American Club in Peshawar who told me straightly that the Kalash, surrounded by conservative Islam, had no chance of survival and would be gone in 10 years. That was 25 years ago. When I caught up with Saifullah recently, asked what his response was to those who believe Kalash culture is dying.

“It’s not true,” he declared. “The Kalash culture and community is as strong today as it was when you first came. We still have our festivals. We still have a shaman and bow shakers. an Oazis who are holding the culture. the religion. Our younger people are becoming prouder of the culture they know they are different and they like it. Many are learning the old ways from the fathers,” he added.

Will Millard, a TV presenter who spent a year living with the Korawai of West Papua, agree “Perhaps tribal communities aren’t in decline, but just in transition (转型),” he told me.. “As human society, we are in a constant state of change. We accuse them of losing their culture because they’re wearing clothes, or using a gun instead of arrows, but a T-shirt doesn’t make them any of a Korawai man. Culture lives below the surface,” added Millard.

1. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic of the text.B.To call on people to protect forests.
C.To show conflicts between humans.D.To describe tribal communities’ condition.
2. What is the author’s attitude towards some media’s views about tribal communities?
A.Skeptical.B.Disapproving.C.Uncaring.D.Ambiguous.
3. How has the culture of the Kalash changed in the last 25 years?
A.The Kalash culture has been declining.
B.The younger generation have lost their traditions.
C.Original culture has made the Kalash richer
D.The younger generation have become more aware of their culture’s uniqueness.
4. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Tribal culture is worth preserving.
B.Tribal communities have been damaged.
C.Tribal communities are not in decline but in transition.
D.Traditional communities’ lives are changing.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了作者认为主题公园里的现场娱乐表演让公园更有活力,体验更好。

4 . As much as I love the rides in theme parks, my favorite part of the experience is the live entertainment. Whether it’s a parade, stage show, “streetmosphere”, or even an impressive nighttime show, I just love the energy that a live performance can bring to a space. It is not uncommon for me to visit a theme park and go on one ride and spend the rest of the time just enjoying the atmosphere.

No matter how many times I ride an attraction, I’m having the same experience. But with live entertainment, it constantly changes. Different performers bring their own touch to the show. Even when things go wrong in a live situation, I find it fascinating to see how it is covered. There is an impressive art to fixing an error, or sometimes even making it a comedic moment.

But because these live performances aren’t bolted (固定) to the ground and are easily influenced, they are often the first thing to get removed from the parks when there is a shortage of money. As much as I understand this business decision, it feels shortsighted. The parks simply don’t feel alive when live entertainment is missing. Without it, a theme park is just a group of people walking quickly from one ride to the next.

We are certainly living in an unprecedented time, but I’m happy to see that theme parks have found creative ways to make sure there is some sort of live entertainment put on safe. Most parks are having their characters and performances visible from a distance.

One of my favorite examples of this was shared by @Attractions on Twitter, where Winnie the Pooh was frolicking around Epcot and trying to catch a butterfly. This is such a great example of what can be done with characters and live entertainers in a time when the “norm” isn’t possible, I honestly hope that these special moments remain once it’s safe for the meet-and-greets and close-up interactions to return.

1. What does the author like best in a theme park?
A.Joining its parades.B.Observing its visitors.
C.Trying its various rides.D.Enjoying its live shows.
2. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The error.B.The show.C.The reason.D.The attention.
3. What does the author think of the business decision in paragraph 3?
A.It will bring theme parks more business.
B.It will make theme parks easily influenced
C.It will make theme park rides more popular.
D.It will take away the liveliness of theme parks.
4. Why does the author mention Winnie the Pooh?
A.To explain what theme parks can do to stay
B.To show its popularity among theme park visitors.
C.To explain what characters can do to get closer to visitors.
D.To show the influence special times can have on theme park.

6 . After most people complete their undergraduate degree, they either take a break or jump into a job. Few, like Brianna Craft, set out to save the world.

It started when she was a freshman sitting in an environmental studies class in 2006. Craft was shocked when the professor described the harm climate change was having on people. She records the moment in her new book, Everything That Rises: A Climate Change Memoir.

After graduation, Craft spent a year in AmeriCorps, focusing on protecting the environment. AmeriCorps is an organization connecting individuals and organizations to help communities tackle their toughest challenges. “That helped me figure out that my future was not in doing science,” she says. Instead, she wanted to work with people and policy.

She then had an opportunity to attend the UN climate negotiations (磋商). That, in turn, prepared her for her current role as a senior researcher at the London-based International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Her focus is to ensure that the lowest contributors to greenhouse gases and those most affected by climate change have a voice in international climate negotiations.

For five years, Craft attended and supported climate conferences around the world, leading to the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015. Craft says, “I wanted people to care about the work I did in the climate negotiations, and why we pushed so hard to form this agreement.” That led her to write Everything That Rises: A Climate Change Memoir.

Craft brings the viewpoint of an African American woman from a rural northwest community. She weaves (编织) together several storylines-including her difficult childhood with an irresponsible parent, her self-discovery in college and her work to help work towards climate agreements and ensure that even the smallest countries have a voice.

1. What motivated Craft to work on climate change?
A.A course.B.A book.C.A scientist.D.A program.
2. How did the experience in AmeriCorps help Craft?
A.She made achievements.
B.She fell in love with science.
C.She got inspiration for her book.
D.She was clearer about her career path.
3. What does Craft do as a senior researcher at the IIED?
A.She promotes equal rights to speak among countries.
B.She focuses on removing greenhouse gases in London.
C.She ensures climate negotiations are the UN’s top priority.
D.She speaks for the countries producing the most greenhouse gases.
4. Which of the following words best describes Craft’s job?
A.Boring.B.Risky.C.Fruitful.D.Well-paid.

It was a hot summer day when my world turned upside down. The sun shone brightly and the sky seemed to be painted in an endless shade of blue. Little did I know that this particular day would become rooted in my memory forever.

I woke up with a sense of excitement; it was the first day of the summer camp. I had been looking forward to this day for weeks, imagining the adventures, new friends, and endless fun that awaited me. I quickly dressed in my favorite camp T-shirt and shorts, my backpack filled with snacks and a water bottle, eagerly anticipating the day ahead.

As I arrived at the camp, the energy was contagious (有感染力的). The air was filled with laughter, chatter, and the promise of an unforgettable summer. I quickly made friends with Sarah, a girl with a contagious smile, and we became really close over our shared love for adventure.

The camp was a wonderland, with activities ranging from sports to arts and crafts. I felt like I was ready to absorb every bit of knowledge and experience that came my way. The day went by quickly as we laughed through games, amazed at nature hikes, and cheered each other on during various sports activities. The sun seemed to run against the clock, reminding us to enjoy every moment before it was too late.

However, the day took an unexpected turn when a teacher announced an unexpected activity-a team-building exercise involving a high ropes course. I had always been afraid of heights, but the excitement of the challenge mixed with the encouragement from my newfound friends pushed me to give it a try.

Standing at the base of the towering structure, my heart raced like a runaway train. Each step up the ladder felt heavier. A sense of panic gradually began to catch me.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了应对“不好的想法”的一些技巧。

10 . Bad thoughts can trouble you for days, weeks, or months. While you should always seek help if you constantly suffer from bad thoughts, you can work through them on your own in many cases.

1     This is possibly the easiest way to start addressing your problems. Too often you believe you are the only one with problems, or that no one understands what you are going through. But bad thoughts are part of life and, most importantly, they will go away.

Think about what makes the thought “bad”. Why are you upset about it?     2     Bad thoughts exist because you feel ashamed, angry, or unsure, so thinking about why you are caught on the same thought can help address the problem.

3     Getting your bad thoughts into the open is a great way to work through what makes them so bad. It helps you realize that the thought is not as bad as it seemed.     4     Simply telling your thoughts in a comfortable setting may be enough to remove them.

Literally “throw your problem away”. This may sound strange and unusual, but people who write down their bad thoughts and throw the paper away have a better self-image than people who keep the paper. By doing this, you can tell your body that it is time to move on.     5

A.What is making it stick in your head?
B.How can you solve it as quickly as possible?
C.Remember that occasional bad thoughts are normal.
D.Talk through your bad thoughts with someone you trust.
E.Even if a situation isn’t ideal or is difficult, you can still be okay.
F.Also, someone with similar anxieties may offer you valuable advice.
G.Just emptying your computer’s trash bin (垃圾箱) has the same effect.
