1 . Gather together a couple of good friends and take a leisurely stroll through the streets—this is what many youngsters in China enjoy doing when they visit a new city.

To them, Citywalk means “roaming around the city” on foot. Participants can follow a distinctive urban route, soaking up the atmosphere, exploring old buildings, browsing boutique shops, sipping a cup of coffee, or indulging in authentic (正宗的) local snacks.

In China, the Citywalk trend is spreading from first-tier cities like Beijing and Shanghai to second and third-tier cities, encouraging more participants and event organizers to get involved. Some organizers invite folk culture researchers and enthusiasts (爱好者) to act as tour guides. A young entrepreneur (主办者) based in Changsha exploring new possibilities in the tourism sector launched six Citywalk routes in different cities on her social media account recently, with the aim of providing experiences for visitors to “walk in open-air museums”.

Some regions, such as Beijing and Shandong, have included Citywalk in their plans to promote cultural tourism and leisure tours. Shanghai has established Citywalk routes using public bus routes to help day-trippers reach more far-flung districts by public transport and continue on foot.

Even though Citywalk is a relatively niche and new phenomenon, industry insiders say that its potential is huge. Zhang Zhi, a tour guide from Beijing said tourists nowadays are paying more attention to personalized travel services. Many tour guides also try to expand their influence online, sharing their experiences in a bid to attract potential customers.

Citywalk is offering a positive change to urban travelers as they can better choose the experiences that align with their interests and needs. At the same time, Citywalk represents an opportunity for tour guides and travel service providers to offer a more tailored, professional service to meet with ever-changing market demands. (CGTN)

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,作者主要讲了自己职场失败的经历,以此告诉读者如何应对被解雇的困境。

3 . During my career in the past years, I’ve been fired a few times. The last time was about five years ago.

At the time, I co-owned a literary agency. I agreed to take on a giant project for a major client. I worked my tail off about a year, focusing just on this one client. Meanwhile my partner and associates took care of everyone else. We all thought it was a good bet. But in the end, the client fired me and cooperated with an agency who promised to get him a major book deal with a New York publishing house and an appearance on Oprah. I was left high and dry with nothing to show for my year-long investment.

The worst part was that I did not see it coming. I thought I had done a great job, and we had enjoyed a long-term personal relationship. But my client had his eye on bigger things and decided I couldn’t take him there, so he abandoned me without discussion.

The thing I finally learned from this experience was that clients and customers can be changeable. So never put all your eggs in one basket.

This wasn’t the only mistake I’d made in my career. Some of the mistakes I had made got me fired. That got my attention and furthered my education in the school of hard knocks.

Chances are that you are going to be fired at some point in your career. Last May, 1.7 million workers in America were laid off or fired. And according to the Labor Department, that was during month of generally good economic news. The trick — after being fired — is to try to push bitterness aside and learn from it. Failure can be a great teacher, but we have to listen.

1. Why did the author only focus on one project?
A.His client required him to do so.
B.He considered it would be a safe bet.
C.It can give him an appearance on Oprah.
D.There were no other projects in his agency.
2. Why was the author abandoned?
A.He caused some trouble for his client.
B.His client wanted to teach him a lesson.
C.He couldn’t satisfy his client’s demands.
D.His client was afraid of destroying their friendship.
3. What lesson did the author probably learn?
A.He should have spread his risk.
B.He should have tried his best to do better.
C.He shouldn’t have worked on giant projects.
D.He shouldn’t have made friends with his clients.
4. What did the author mainly write the text for?
A.To show the importance of failure
B.To tell us how to face getting fired.
C.To share a most horrible experience.
D.To explain why people easily get fired.

5 . At ancient sites across the Amazon River basin, mysterious plots of unusually rich soil dot (点缀) the landscape. Scientists have long debated the origin of this “dark earth”, which is darker in color than surrounding soils and richer in carbon. Some people think this dark earth formed naturally, but the latest research has shown that modern Kuikuro people in Brazil create similar soil around their villages on purpose, which adds evidence to the idea that long-ago Amazons deliberately made such soil too. Perron, an earth scientist at MIT, reviewed interviews of Kuikuro people conducted by a Kuikuro filmmaker in 2018 and found that Kuikuro villagers actively make dark earth by using ash, food bits and controlled burns. “When you plant in hilly land, the soil is weak,” explained elder Kanu Kuikuro in one of the interviews. That is why we throw the ash, manioc peelings and manioc pulp. When comparing soil samples from ancient and modern sites, researchers found “striking similarities” — both were far less acidic than surrounding soils and contained higher levels of plant-friendly nutrients.

Analyses also revealed that dark earth holds twice the amount of carbon as surrounding soils on average. Scans (扫描) of the Xingu region suggest that the area is dotted with dark earth, and that hold as much as about 9 million tons of carbon — the annual carbon emissions of a small, industrialized country. “This number could roughly equal the annual carbon emissions of the United States when all dark earth across the Amazon is taken into consideration,” Perron says.

Figuring out the true value of carbon stored in the Amazon’s dark earth will require more data. Still, the research has significant influences on the Amazon’s future. The technique highlights how ancient people were able to live in the Amazon by developing sustainable farming that doubled as a carbon-storing technique. With more and more greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere, it could also provide a blueprint for developing methods of sustainably locking atmospheric carbon in the soil, helping fight climate change.

1. What can we infer from the dark earth across the Amazon River basin?
A.They are more acidic than surrounding soils.
B.They contain more organic nutrients.
C.They formed naturally.
D.They contain less carbon.
2. Why does the author mention the annual carbon emissions of the US?
A.To explain the difficulty of protecting dark earth.
B.To show the wide distribution of dark earth in Amazon.
C.To stress the huge carbon-storing capability of dark earth.
D.To reveal the large carbon emissions of the United States.

A.The importance of developing sustainable farming.

7 . The Healing Power of Humor

As a heart doctor, I have to deliver a lot of bad news. Humor is a wonderful tool. Not only can it help lift patients’ spirits up, but it actually helps them recover faster. There is tons of scientific evidence that patients who are depressed after heart operations have a higher death rate, and optimistic patients have significantly fewer wound infections.     1

It relaxes patients.

Medical operations usually make patients feel nervous. Some may sweat, have chest pain and feel unusually strong or irregular heartbeats.     2     When people use humor, the nervous system just tones down a bit, and that allows the heart to relax.

    3

People are scared of their bodies. Humor can crack through the ice and take the fear away. For example, I have to tell patients about the risk of cognitive impairment (认知损伤) after operations. They’re terrified, fearing the worst.     4     I tell them in a humorous way that it’s usually just like forgetting second grade. People understand what that means, and it doesn’t seem quite as frightening.

It eases worries.

After open-heart operation, a patient might say, “Doctor, my chest really hurts.” And I’ll smile and say, “Oh, does it feel like someone opened you up, cut the bone and operated in there?” That tells them the pain is normal and they are going to be fine. So they take their minds off their troubles and worry less.

It helps doctors.

5     When we give the news, we are supposed to help patients in a human way. A good sense of humor is just like a weapon, and it can beat the difficult situation. As a matter of fact, humor benefits doctors as well. Plus, it is a better way to enjoy life.

A.It calms fear.
B.It reduces risk.
C.So, recovering cognition is important.
D.However, humor can be a healing power.
E.Breaking bad news is never a pleasant task.
F.Others may even feel like they are choking.
G.Humor truly is the best medicine in many ways.

8 . Attention! We need to put a stop to parents doing harm to youth sports. It has gotten out of hand.

A recent study showed 26 million American children took part in non-school sports. By the age of 13, about 18.2 million quit.

No wonder kids are quitting. Many parents show no sportsmanship. They often shout happily at an injury if the injured player is on the other team. My brother Mario Widdowson got hit in the face during a soccer game. The parents from the other team were shouting gladly at his pain. All of the players were down on one knee waiting for Mario to get up, out of respect and it was the right thing to do. The kids did much better than these parents.

There are different types of parents. In the book “Parenting with Love and Logic” the authors describe two different types of parents. The first is helicopter parents, who don’t allow their kid to succeed or fail on their own. The other type is lawnmower parents, who clear anything in their child’s path to make life as easy as possible.

I have observed helicopter parents. When my brother was playing club soccer, one of his teammate’s parents shouted at their son. “Shoot the ball”. It was from about half field. He did it and the coach stopped him from playing and asked him to leave the field.

The parents are trying to coach their kids. The players on the field follow blindly and many mistakes happen. It’s not good for kids’ confidence. What is the purpose of youth sports anyway?

Problems happen in youth sports all over the United States. Parents need to behave themselves. Then the number of students who quit at the age of 13 will drop greatly.

1. What does the author want to show by using numbers in Paragraph 2?
A.American kids are sports lovers.
B.Parents can’t behave themselves.
C.Most kids give up sports half-way.
D.Non-school sports are popular among teens.
2. What did some parents do when Mario got injured?
A.They lent a helping hand.B.They cheered at his injury.
C.They waited for him to get up.D.They kept shouting at their kids.
3. Why was the boy asked to leave the field?
A.He made a mistake.
B.He missed his goal.
C.He turned to the coach again.
D.He didn’t want to go on with the sport.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Parents Should Respect Sports.B.Non-school Sports Is Popular.
C.Encouragement Is Important for Kids.D.Kids Need to Love Sports.

文章大意:本文是新闻报道。文章主要讲述了一名八岁的小姑娘Danay Ferguson为了鼓励其他儿童阅读而创办了一个非营利组织 Reading Heart,并为许多儿童捐赠了图书。

9 . At 8 years old, Danay Ferguson is the youngest business owner in Fresno, California, where the literacy (识字) rate is shockingly low when compared to the rest of the United States.

“I wanted to share my enthusiasm for reading with other kids, so I asked my daddy if I could open up my business,” Danay says, adding that her father, Dwayne Ferguson, asked her to prove she was serious about taking on such a major project. “He said I had to invite all of his friends on Facebook to the fan page he made for me,” she says. “It took me two days to invite my dad’s 4,000 friends to ‘like’ my page, one by one.”

With the help of her family and team of over 40 volunteers (mostly consisting of kids), Danay strengthened her literacy support in 2014 with her very own no-profit (非营利的) organization named Reading Heart. Danay has worked hard to raise awareness of her organization’s task by giving talks at schools, meeting with city officials and hosting board meetings.

“Her main line is ‘How about you get a book and read it and then share the book with somebody else, and do it again?’ instead of, ‘I give you a book and keep it,’ says Dwayne. “She’s starting a movement on ‘I will give everybody books, but you have to read and share them.’ And she’s trying to do this worldwide.”

And Danay also hopes to break the Guinness World Record for most books collected in a 24-hour period. Danay has a goal of beating the existing record (set at 274,325) with 500,000 donated books, which she is now making possible with a speaking tour that covers 130 schools encouraging kids to read. So far, Reading Heart has collected 90,000 books and given out over 20,000 books, having gifted used and new books to kids in schools, hospitals and in poor areas. “It is the most amazing thing to be a part of,” Dwayne tells us. “My wife and I have to remember that we are her parents because we have great respect for her.”

1. What is Reading Heart intended for?
A.Collect books.B.Encourage reading.
C.Break world records.D.Make friends.

The Right Thing to Do

“Today’s test score will decide who has topped the class, so be ready,” Miss Natasha announced to the class.

Miss Natasha collected everyone’s test papers, and then cleared her throat to announce the results as she distributed the test papers among the students. Everyone was nervous about what their scores might be.

Ali and Bob had been competitors since class one and each year it was always one of the two that came first in the class. This year, there was tough competition between them both, and they eagerly awaited the results.

“Peter, 18,” announced Miss Natasha as she handed him his paper, “Eric, 16, Ali, 20, Bob, 19… and lastly Alia, 15.”

Once Miss Natasha had distributed (分发) all of the test papers in class, everyone soon realized that Ali had beaten Bobby one mark and topped the class. Everyone congratulated him and Ali was happy.

As Ali was about to put his paper in his bag, he noticed that by mistake Miss Natasha had given him two marks for an incorrect answer. He was shocked. He rechecked his answers and realized that all his answers were correct except for that one. However, if he informed Miss Natasha about it, he would not only lose two marks but also his first position.

After considering the situation, he decided to keep quiet and went home. However, he kept thinking about it all evening. Should he or shouldn’t he tell Miss Natasha about it? He thought that it had been already done, and no one would notice if he didn’t tell anyone, but then another thought crossed his mind. If he didn’t tell the teacher about it and stayed top of the class, he would have taken a title that should have belonged to Bob.

This situation put Ali in a hard position. His parents always taught him to do the right thing, but doing the right thing here meant he would no longer be top of the class. He remembered how everyone cheered for him and congratulated him in class.
