When You Snooze (贪睡), You Lose!
Last Wednesday, I set my alarm for seven o’clock in the morning, just like I always did. But I’d gone to bed a little later than usual, so when it went off, I rolled over and hit the snooze button, thinking I’d have five more minutes of sleep before I got up. For some reason, the snooze alarm didn’t go off. When I saw that it was 7:45, I couldn’t believe it!
Since I was late, I skipped breakfast, and I didn’t make the bed or straighten up my room even though it was part of the “house rules”.
I ran as fast as I could to catch the school bus, but even so, I missed it. Luckily for me, my father hadn’t left for work yet, so I asked him for a ride to school. He wasn’t too happy about it because it meant he would be late for an appointment he had set up. So he was annoyed with me, especially since it was the second time in two weeks that I had missed the school bus. We rode to school in total silence.
By the time I got to school, the bell had already rung, so I had to go to the office to get a “late pass” before I could be admitted to class. That’s when I remembered that I hadn’t asked my father to write a note for my being late. He’d been in such a bad mood, and I knew that this was especially directed at me, so I decided there was no way I could call him now. Besides, he was sure to be in his meeting.
So, there I was, sitting out the first hour in the principal’s office. Things were really starting to snowball but it was only the beginning. Since I was absent from my first-hour class, I missed my science test. My teacher said I couldn’t make up the test since I was absent without leave. But I really needed that test to improve my grade point average. My dad promised to give me half of the money for a car if my grades improved by the end of this semester. So I started thinking about not being able to buy a car, and I got even more upset.

5 . Two years ago Lucy was saved from a rural area in New South Wales, Australia. Today, she is one of the lucky animals living in rows of trees that have been created to protect koalas and other animals by saving their smaller and smaller habitat (栖息地) , or natural environment.

This protects koalas from human threats (威胁). “Our trees are actually trying to get them away from humans, cars and dogs. ”said Linda Sparrow. President of Bangalow Koalas.
The koala is expected to die out in the wild in New South Wales by 2050. Some of the biggest threats include wildfires and habitat loss through land clearing for development.

7 . Films to watch this year
Lightyear
Buzz Lightyear has been central to four Toy Story feature films, his own TV series, and various cartoon shorts. This year, the square-jawed Space Ranger is getting a film of his own. Director Angus MacLane ( co-director of Finding Dory ) and screenwriter Pete Docter ( Soul, Up, Inside Out ) bring back a beloved character while giving his interstellar story a new look, a more serious tone, and a fresh voice:
Chris Evans rather than Tim Allen is the actor who’ll be shouting,“To infinity - and beyond!” Released internationally on 17 June
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ( Part One )
It’s unlikely that the sequel will be quite as creative, but, as the sub-title suggests, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ( Part One ) is the first episode in a two-part story, which makes it a rarity in the world of cartoon films.
Released internationally on 7 October
Avatar 2
There are two things we know about James Cameron: he can’ t be rushed, and he loves the ocean. Those qualities come together in Avatar 2. The new film returns to the planet of Pandora, where blue- skinned Neytiri ( Zeo Saldana ) and her human husband Jake ( Sam Worthington ) are now patents, and Earthlings still haven’t solved the climate crisis. Most of the action took place underwater and was shot in a 900,000-gallon tank.
Released internationally on 16 December
Top Gun: Maverick
It was back in 1986 that Tom Cruise last played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a trainee fighter pilot in the US Navy. Can anyone really believe that, all these years later, Maverick would only be a captain while his old frenemy “Iceman” ( Val Kilmer ) would be a four-star general?

I still remember how nervous I felt doing some things for the first time. You’d think that after a lot of first times the butterflies-in-stomach feeling would disappear. But here’s what happened a month ago.
“Please come to the chess club tomorrow,” Mareya said to me. “I know you’re going to love it!” “I’ve never even played chess(国际象棋),” I said. “It seems super hard.”
“I went last week, and it was extremely fun!” said Mareya. “Really?” I said, not convinced.
“Really. Also, the club needs more people to keep it going.” Mareya smiled.
“Listen. If you try it, I’ll do my silly rabbit dance in the middle of recess (课间休息).” I laughed. “In front of everyone? It’s a deal!”
When I arrived at home. I searched our game shelves. Finally, at the very bottom of the pile, I found a tattered (破旧的) box with a chessboard and plastic chess pieces. I read the instructions carefully. Knights, rooks, bishops, pawns, a king, and a queen — each piece had a special starting place and its own way of moving. My heart sank. I couldn’t possibly memorize all the rules in time. Everyone in the chess club was going to think I was inexperienced!
That night, I dreamed I was in a chess game, and the queens, kings, and knights were laughing at me. Even the knights’ horses were snickering (窃笑)! The next day, I told Mareya I was having second thoughts.
“Please don’t back out,” she said. “Remember our deal.”
“I would like to see your silly rabbit dance,” I said, smiling.
After school, I found the chess club’s meeting room and went inside. I looked around, but Mareya was nowhere in sight! To make matters worse, I didn’t know a single person in the room. Butterflies filled my stomach as I started to head toward the door.
“Hi!” said a friendly woman. “I’m Ms.Martinez.”
“I’m Arizona,” I said. “ I was supposed to meet a friend, but I don’t see her. I’d better get going.” “Well, as long as you ‘re here, why don’t you sit with Joe and Jess and watch their game?”

10 . World number one Ashleigh Barty surprised tennis on Wednesday by announcing her retirement (退役) from the sport aged just 25, saying she had realized her dreams and was “spent physically”.
Barty dropped the bombshell weeks after becoming the first home Australian Open champion in 44 years and so winning a Grand Slam (大满贯) crown on three different surfaces.
In a tearful social media video message with her close friend and former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua, Barty said she was “so ready” to call it an end after achieving her life-time goal to win Wimbledon last year.
“Success for me is knowing that I’ve given absolutely everything I can. I know how much work it takes to bring the best out of yourself,” said the three-time Grand Slam winner.
She began playing tennis as a child in the Queensland state capital Brisbane and went on to win the junior Wimbledon title as a 15-year-old in 2011.

The attraction of tennis was never far away and she returned after a season out, breaking through for her first Grand Slam triumph (胜利) at the French Open in 2019 and becoming Australia’s first women’s world number one since Evonne Cawley 50 years ago.
Barty finally won a Wimbledon crown last year before her Australian Open triumph at Melbourne Park in January, storming back from 5—1 down in the second set against American Danielle Collins.
