2 . The SNAG stands for stereotyped nature-inspired aerial grasper and it’s a 3D-printed bird robot with claws. It can fly, stay on various surfaces catch and carry objects, just like the mighty falcon（隼）that was used as the source of inspiration in its development.

Each leg of the SNAG has two motors, one for helping it move back and forth, and the other one for grasping. Twenty printing attempts were necessary for the robot to finally reach its current structure, but it was worth it. Now, according to researchers, the flying machine has an impressively strong and high-speed clutch（离合器），being able to land and wrap its claws around a branch in about 20 milliseconds. SNAG has ankles lock, and there’s an accelerometer （加速计）on its right foot that reports that it’s landed while triggering（触发）a balancing process to stabilize it.

Scientists have already conducted several tests with the robot in rural areas and on different surfaces. In all the situations, the SNAG was able to catch objects thrown by hand, such as bean bags, a tennis ball, and more.

As for the applications of the bird-like robot, the SNAG can get attached to drones（无人机）and be used for search and rescue missions, wildfire monitoring, to offer just a few examples. Another great application is environmental research, with the SNAG also featuring a temperature and humidity（湿度）sensor. By using a robot that can act like a bird, you can unlock new ways of studying the environment, as explained by William Roderick, mechanical engineer and one of the researchers involved in the project. Now scientists are moving on to improving the robot’s situational awareness and flight control.

6 . Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot… you can travel fast or slow. The movement of your feet gets you where you need to go. But it also gets you so much more!     1    

Walking helps you in various ways. First it makes your heart stronger. Studies show regular walking lowers your chance of heart disease. Walking for 30 minutes per day also helps control blood pressure. It can reduce your chance of having a stroke or developing some cancers, too.

Want to lose weight? You need to burn 600 more calories each day than you eat.     2    

Walking helps your brain health. As people age, their brains don’t work as well. One in 14 people over 65 years old suffers from memory loss. Older people who walk six miles or more per week keep their brains in better shape.     3     You don’t have to think about it, so you can consider other things. You can consider problems or think of ideas. You can think over conversations again or just remember funny things that have just happened recently.

Walking is also good for your wallet. It saves the cost of going to a gym.     4     A pedometer(计步器) can get you started. Begin with trying to take 1,000 steps in 10 minutes to set the right pace.

You can make walking part of your day. Instead of parking right next to your office, park a distance away— and walk. Do not take the elevator, but walk.     5     They are what they sound like. Rather than sit, you walk and talk things over.

Make walking a habit, and see how it makes you feel.

7 . You accidentally step into quicksand(流沙）. You begin to sink. Can you drown? Quicksand is sand with so much water between its particles (颗粒) that is soupy. Quicksand can no longer support weight. So does this mean one can drown in quicksand?

The truth is that it is very rare to drown in quicksand. This is because of two things. The first reason is that most quicksand pools are not deep. Usually, a person will sink only a few inches before hitting solid ground. If it is a deep pool, an adult will usually hit solid ground after sinking only to his or her waist. Deeper pools are rare, but even then, there is a reason why people are not swallowed（吞没）up after accidentally stepping into quicksand.

The reason is that quicksand is dense（稠密）. When something is dense, its particles are crowded close together. Quicksand is denser than the human body. This means that humans will naturally float in quicksand! The upward push of quicksand is greater than the downward push of the human body.

Usually you will sink to your chest before you begin to float. Your lungs, acting like giant balloons, help you float. You will only sink further if you are loaded down, perhaps with a heavy pack. Take off your pack, and you cannot drown. You cannot be swallowed.

One man escaped from quicksand after he sank up to his chest. How did he do it? He swam. People can swim in quicksand if they move slowly enough. The man slowly made swimming motions with his arms and legs. He swam slowly and carefully for an hour. He did not stop making the swimming motions once. Finally, he reached the edge of the quicksand pool. He did not drown. He climbed out unharmed.
