2 . Some 30 million Americans suffer from insomnia (失眠症). Here, our experts provide you with four different solutions for getting some rest:
Neil B.Kavey, MD. Director, Sleep Disorders Center. New York Presbyterian Hospital | The sleep specialist. Try behavior changes and proper use of medication. At night, keep away from bright light. In the morning, open the shades and go out for a walk,to tell your brain, “This is the start of the day.” You can try OTC sleep aids, but if you suffer for more than three weeks, see a doctor. Drugs are safe when used properly, and better than the consequences of not sleeping. |
Gerald Lemole, MD. Associate Medical Director, Christiana Care Center for Hcart and Vascular Health, Wilmington, Delaware | The alternative source. Stress often plays a part in insomnia, so try to change your reaction to it. Don’t exercise or eat at the end of the day, and avoid or limit caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. Enjoying a warm bath can help. Also, try taking 1000 mg of calcium (钙) (it may calm your muscles and nerves, helping you sleep). |
Lisa Derosimo, MD, Owner, The Weight and Wellness Center, Jupiter, Florida | The nutritionist. Go to bed and get up at the same time daily. Keep your room dark and quiet, and remove distractions (no working in bed). Have a cup of herbal (草药)tea, such as chamomile, to relax your body. And remember, people who eat a healthy diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat protein feel better and sleep better. |
Sandra McLanahan, MD, Medical Director, Integral Health Center, Buckingham, Virginia | The mind/body pro. Lying in bed, starting from your legs and moving up to your head, tense your muscles one at a time, and then release. Your body will feel more relaxed, like a rubber band after it’s been stretched. And try alternate nostril (鼻孔) breathing. Exhale (呼气) through one nostril, using your fingers to close the opposite nostril. Breathe in and out; then switch back and forth. |

6 . I am a book conservator. I work for The Gladys Brooks Book and Paper Conservation Laboratory, attending to the physical well-being of collections materials.
Currently I am working on a copy of The byrth of mankynde, otherwise named The womans book, by Eucharius Roesslin, London, 1545. The book arrived in the lab broken in half. It had suffered from several unsuccessful attempts to repair the damage over the years. I carefully documented the original sewing pattern, so that I could resew it in the same way. Next, I dyed(给上色) leather to match the original color, which I will use to recreate the spine (书脊). After it is completed, the book will receive a new, custom cover, and will be ready to be used again.
I come from an art background, having received my bachelor degree in studio art from Bard College. It was really through an interest in materials (specifically paper, leather, etc) that I became involved in bookbinding—fastening books together and putting covers on them. Later I received a diploma, which led me to many wonderful experience in book conservation.
Working in conservation can be very satisfying: the outcome of our work is unusually obvious. Working to preserve materials for future readers can be creatively challenging, and requires flexible thinking. I like that it is a profession that combines working with your hands with an intellectual component. And of course, I am very happy to take a book that is too fragile to be handled and make it usable again.
Many books that come up to the conservation lab are too fragile to be handled by readers; our work makes these materials accessible. This is important not just for readers that come and use our collection in person, but also for preparation for digitization projects and exhibitions. However, some people think that all we do is repair bibles! This work is much more creative than a few binding repairs. Many bookbinders create books and book art in addition to repair work. They are artists who show their work in galleries and museums.
1. What does the author think of his job?A.Easy. | B.Ordinary. | C.Satisfying. | D.Flexible. |
A.The way the book sewed. | B.The pattern the book broke. |
C.The method of repairing spines. | D.The material used for the cover. |

C.My job as a book binder. | D.My experience of studying binding. |
7 . Chemicals are a requirement to keep farmers competitive, kill pests, and produce at a scale that means they can have a good livelihood. However, the EU has banned 250 chemical pesticides, forcing farmers to come up with alternative solutions.
The answer to an environmentally friendly pest-free farm is ducks. This approach was viewed by thousands of people late last year but the images turned out to be false. However, after some digging, we have found that it is real in many other places. There are a number of farms in countries like China, Japan, and South Africa that release thousands of ducks on their crops in order to keep off smaller bugs.
A wine vineyard(葡萄园) called Vergenoegd in South Africa has a team of 1,200 ducks to defend its vineyards. The location of the place is beside a large lake which makes snails arrive in incredible numbers to the location. Left unattended, their vineyards would be devoured by the snails. To combat this, the farmers hire some ducks. Every morning, the ducks will slowly go through the vineyards and will finish up by about 4 pm. A full day's work may sound pretty tough but the ducks receive good payment, all they can eat in snails and other insects.
The farm has been using ducks since 1984 as pesticides are not the only benefit. Ducks also provide great fertilizer as their poo is very high in nutrients and helps the vines to grow quickly and strongly.
While using ducks instead of pesticides seems to be a win-win situation all around, it does have its drawbacks. Most notably, the cost. At Vergenoegd, the ducks cost about nineteen thousand dollars per year to care for. The vineyard social media manager David Badenhorst says that using traditional chemical-based methods of pest control would be far less expensive, but of course much less sustainable. Farmers are working to come up with a label to attach their products to show it is more environmental awareness.

8 . Healthy eating may offer young children an unexpected gift—it might help them become better readers.
Researchers in Finland found students' reading skills improved more between first grade and third grade if they didn't eat a lot of sugary foods or red meat, and if their diet consisted mainly of vegetables, berries and other fruits, as well as fish, whole grains and unsaturated(不饱和的) fats.
The researchers observed 161 Finnish students. They were between the ages of 6 and 8(first grade to third grade). The researchers reviewed the children's diets and their reading ability using food diaries and standardized reading tests. A healthier diet was associated with better reading skills by third grade, regardless of how well the students could read in first grade, the researchers said.
“Another significant observation is that the associations of diet quality with reading skills were also independent of many other factors, such as socioeconomic status, physical activity, body fat and physical fitness,” said Eero Haapala, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Eastern Finland and the University of Jyvaskyla.
Does that mean parents of picky eaters should be concerned about their child’s reading abilities? Not necessarily. Although this study found an association between the foods young children ate and their reading skills, it didn't prove cause-and-effect. Still, the researchers said parents, schools, governments and corporations all have an opportunity to enhance academic performance in schools by making healthy foods more available to children.

10 . The good news is that more people bought electric vehicles (EVs) in 2020. The bad news is that sport utility (多用途的)vehicles (SUVs) continued to grow in popularity, too. “The fall in oil consumption due to the first trend was completely canceled out by the second," said Laura Cozzi, an officer at the International Energy Agency (JEA),
Between 2010 and 2020, global carbon dioxide emissions (排放)from conventional cars fell by nearly 35 billion Lons, due to reasons such as fuel efficiency improvements as well as the switch to electric cars. Emissions from SUVs rose by more than 50 billion tons. "While the growth in EVs is encouraging, the boom in SUVs is heart-breaking," says Peters at the Cicero Climate Research Centre in Norway.
There are many reasons for the growing popularity of SUVs. For example, rising economic boom in many countries means more people are able to afford them. Some people see them as status symbols. Also, SUVs are heavily advertised by car-makers, whose profit is higher on these vehicles. Some countries, including France, have introduced plans under which more taxes are paid on heavier cars. But Peters thinks that people who are rich enough to afford SUVs won't be deterred by slightly higher taxes. "There are now some electric SUVs available, but 1 hope one day you will see more electric vehicles brought to the SUV market," says Peters.
Even if it happens, switching to electric SUVs isn't a good solution. Due to their size and bigger batteries, it takes more resources to build electric SUVs, and they consume around 15 percent more electricity. That means higher emissions unless the electricity comes entirely from renewable sources, and higher electricity demand makes it harder to green the electricity supply.
1. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?A.Scientists should devote themselves to improving fuel efficiency. |
B.The emission of carbon dioxide of motor vehicles has hit a new low. |
C.Electric vehicles will certainly take the place of sport utility vehicles. |

A.SUVs are discounted heavily. |
B.SUVs are often advertised by car producers. |
C.SUVs are taxed at a lower rate in some countries. |
D.SUVs consume fewer resources than other vehicles. |
A.The electric SUVs should be made smaller and lighter. |
B.The electric SUVs are a good guarantee for less pollution. |
C.More electric SUVs don’t necessarily mean "environment-friendly". |
D.Future electric SUVs will be powered with completely green energy. |
