1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“You’re fired!” Andrew Chilton wasn’t joking. At that moment, the high school junior wanted his personal care attendant, Christy Chachere, out of his life forever. He didn’t want her help any more. He thought he could write his own term papers. “You’re fired!” He said it again.

Christy Chachere, a retired PE teacher, didn’t take a step back. She believed she could do this job. “You know, I’ve taught middle schoolers,” she said. What about Andrew’s outcry? It was music to her ears. Progress was faster than expected.

When Andrew suffered from autism (自闭症) at age eight, people told his mom, Cindy, to get him on the list for an attendant to provide after-school care. Someone would drive him to places and see that he was safe. In New Orleans, Louisiana, the wait can be years, the need far outstrips (超过) the supply. Cindy had no choice but to turn to the program Volunteers of America for help.

Even so, it was eight years before they were matched with Christy. In the meantime. Andrew’s family did their best to help him get through life’s hardships. “I did worry about him,” said Cindy. There was a lot to worry about. Doctors and school teachers said that Andrew might not even graduate from high school. Other questions were around the corner as well. Would he ever have a job, or live independently?…Cindy would do anything for her son.

Christy saw the problem right away. “Andrew wouldn’t take a step without his mother’s permission (同意),”she recalled. “You have to let him fail,” she told the family. “It’s the only way he’s going to learn. He has to be able to do things on his own.”

No longer would Cindy help Andrew write papers. His younger brother wouldn’t help him with the computer, either. It was a little unacceptable to step back. Actually, everyone was on board but Andrew.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It is hard not to desire victory with all your efforts when the world seems so competitive, especially if you’re a boy growing up with those values. A boy called Edward grew up in a similar environment where winning was all that was valued, and he longed to succeed. He was good at running, so he called everyone in the nearby villages for a race. A large group of people from around came to see this exciting event!

Edward had been training hard for this race. He ran among the strongest boys from around the villages, and the young boy came out victorious! The crowd went wild with excitement as they cheerfully held banners (横幅) praising him. The boy loved the attention. It made him feel happy and energetic.

There were two types of races-short distances and long distances. The boy was unbeatable in both the races he competed in. The crowd loved him even more after the second victory; they clapped with excitement. The boy felt very proud of his achievements.

But among the crowd was a wise older man who did not seem as impressed with the boy’s performances as the rest. Just as the boy thought the races for the day were over, the old man shouted from the crowd, “There is one more race left, the most important one.” The boy was surprised by the additional race, but he was, confident he could win any race.

The old man brought two new competitors for the boy, a blind man and a weak old lady. “What type of race is this? I can easily win them,” the boy said. “The most important one,” repeated the old man. So, the boy ran the race as he knew he would win this time, too. When the boy crossed the finish line, the blind man was still at the start, and the old lady had just started to move. The boy was successful, and he raised his hands with great joy after his victory.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Janiece Jenkins is a math teacher at East Orange Community Charter School, New Jersey. She had been certified in CPR (心肺复苏术) and first aid, 5 years before working here in the school. Because Janiece had never had a chance to put it into use, she almost forgot it after all those years. Recently, the school arranged for all the teachers to take a refresher course. As in the past, Janiece thought little of the first aid knowledge and she never thought she could put it into practice one day. But it happened that way.

On a hot summer afternoon, 9-year-old Robert Stonaker was preparing for his math class when he felt a rush of thirst. He reached for a bottle of water from his school bag. But the cap of the water bottle was too tight, so he struggled to remove it with his mouth. When the third grader squeezed (挤压) the bottle, the water pushed the cap down his throat and blocked his airway.

Unable to breathe, Robert got out from his seat in panic and ran over to the sink to see if he could spit the cap out himself. When that didn’t work, he ran across the room to ask Janiece for help, pointing to his throat.

The boy couldn’t talk. His face was pale, nd he was struggling to breathe. Janiece knew from the desperation on his face that he was choking and that he was in bad need of help. At the critical moment, timing is everything. Brain damage starts after approximately four minutes without oxygen.

Thanks to the refresher course, the first aid steps were fresh in Janiece’s mind. She stood behind Robert and wrapped her arms around the boy’s waist. With one hand made a fist, she pressed hard and quick into his stomach. She pulled inward and upward as she pressed as if she’s trying to lift the boy off the ground. After several rounds of pulls and presses, the cap of the water bottle popped out of his mouth. Seeing the cap on the floor, Janiece breathed a big sigh of relief.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“A nursing home would be safer, Dad,” Arlyn told her father, Jim.

“No way,” Jim interrupted. His wife passed away just a year before. At 91, he still wanted to remain in the cottage he and his wife had built.

Jim started experiencing an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Arlyn found his decline was indeed all-consuming. However, she herself was in her late sixties; her house was a 40-minute drive from the cottage. One day, when she read about a new eldercare service called Care. coach, it fueled her interest. For about $200 a month, a computerized avatar (头像) (controlled remotely by a human caregiver) would watch over a home-bound person 24 hours a day. She signed up immediately.

A week later, a tablet arrived. Following the instructions, Arlyn uploaded dozens of family pictures. Then an animated dog appeared on the screen. She presented the tablet to Jim, pointing to the screen pet, and said excitedly, “Here Dad. You have a new companion.” Jim, doubtful about the dog’s service, knew he had to learn how to get along with the dog before Alzheimer’s took hold.

Within a week, Jim and his dog, whom he named Pony, settled into a routine. Every 15 minutes or so, Pony would look for Jim calling his name if he was out of view. Sometimes Jim would “pet” to awake the sleeping Pony on screen. Pony reminded Jim which caretaker would be visiting to do the tasks: preparing meals, driving him to a senior center, etc. Pony would read poetry aloud or discuss the news. When Pony praised Jim’s sweater, Jim repaid by petting Pony’s screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head. One evening when Arlyn came to visit her father as usual, she was amazed to find that Pony was holding up a photo of her late mum to her dad between its paws.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“Hey, honey!” I said, hugging my seven-year-old, Jean Prince, as she got off the bus. “How was school?” I asked her as I always did.

“Well, not so real good,” she replied, looking sad. “Everyone has their pictures on the Reading Bulletin Board (布告栏) but me. I never get my picture up, not for math or reading or anything.” Her shoulders fell suddenly, and her chin began to shake clearly.

I’d like to believe that, with enough educational treatment, visits to the doctor, experimenting with different medicines for ADHD (多动症), and drill, practice, and patience at home, I can turn my Jean into a teacher’s “dream child,” the skilled and intelligent kid who gets everything right and never colors outside the lines.

But I can’t. And every failure is yet another blow to me, as well as to Jean. Taking a deep breath, I turned on the “building self-esteem (自尊)” mode. “Well, honey, I’m sorry. But I’ll bet something good happened to you today, didn’t it? What was the best thing that you did today?” Jean took her own sweet time, thinking things through. To my relief, she wasn’t, however, on the edge of tears anymore.

Finally, she brightened a bit and said slowly, “Yes, when I passed the gate of the park, I saw a little girl who was walking with her mother and she fell down and cried because her knee bled, I hurried home and took my Barbie doll and gave it to her. She loved it and stopped crying, her mother said thanks to me and I felt good.”

“Sweetie, that’s great!” I said excitedly.

“It is you who have told me that I should be kind and learn to share good things with others,” Jean replied.

I learned that Jean had saved from her allowance (零花钱) for the past month to get that doll, which was her favorite, so I thought to myself, “I will tell all these to Mrs Doe, Jean’s teacher.”

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Charlie was a rich boy who had more toys than you could imagine. His family had a lot of money, and whenever he liked something, they would buy it for him. In reality, then, he had no idea what things cost, and wouldn’t bother to take care of what he had. Nor did he realize how difficult it was for other children to get toys like the ones he had.

A time came, though, when he was so used to all his toys that he began to want something different. One of his uncles found a fine horse and he gave it to Charlie, as something unusual. Charlie was very excited at having a horse. He learned to ride, and was constantly on his horse, going here and there. However, he treated the horse just as badly as he treated all his other toys, and it soon started looking sick. For the first time in his life Charlie became truly worried. He loved the horse, and the fact that his family had offered to buy him a new one meant nothing to him.

One day, while in the countryside, he saw a little girl with a horse. The girl looked very poor, but the horse seemed happy and looked great. Wondering how she had managed this, Charlie secretly followed them, watching everything they did. First he followed them through the forest, where he saw that she never used the stick and never hit the horse. This was the opposite of what Charlie had done to his horse. Then they came to the stable (马厩), and as soon as they arrived the girl fed and watered the horse. Then she carefully cleaned it. Charlie was surprised. He’d never done any of those things for his horse. He saw that the girl spent a lot of time giving care and attention to her horse, and that she did it all on her own. This had never entered Charlie’s mind; he had always been too busy playing and having fun to look after the horse.

Paragraph 1:

Charlie wanted to change and become like the girl.

As a result, Charlie gave up constantly asking for new toys.

The sun shone high in the bright, blue sky. All the students were talking in the playground in excitement. They had been told that the next day they would have a test on good manners(礼貌).

The children had thought that hygiene(卫生)was an important part of the test. One child added that they should also remember to say “please” and “thank you.” The next day all the children appeared in their best clothes. The playground was very bright that day; a contrast (对比)that was provided with the usual black and white uniform of the school.

All the children made a line and began to go inside the building. As they went, an old washerwoman(洗衣女工)who worked at the school appeared. She had white hair and carried an extremely heavy bag of clothes on her back. As the students passed, she asked for help. Some of them did not reply at all and some of them replied, “Sorry but we have a very important test and we cannot be late.”

None helped until the washerwoman asked the last student going inside, Maria. Maria replied, “Of course, I’ll help you.”

Maria took the burden(重担)off the old washerwoman's back and put it onto her shoulders. She then followed the old lady to her workplace.

The path was not a smooth one. Maria accidentally(不小心) fell down and her dress became dirty. Maria was sure she would fail her test now, for she was already late and now she was not presentably(体面的)dressed either, but she put on a brave face and continued walking.

After a while, Maria and the washerwoman came to the workplace. The old lady opened the door and Maria followed her inside. Maria was shocked to find her whole class inside the room.

It is strange how a single moment can change a person’s life. It is incredible how one simple act of love can forever change one’s soul.

My adult son walked to the table this morning for breakfast. He opened his arms to me, saying, “Good morning, Mom. I love you!” I opened my arms, too, responding, “Good morning, honey. I love you, too!” And I gave him a big hug just like I do every morning. Just at this time, a beautiful memory from many years ago came back to me.

My Italian grandmother who lived in countryside liked hugging very much when I was a girl. But my mom had studied in the city and grown up in a more reserved environment. My mom hugged me sometimes, but less often as I grew into my teenage years. My dad also seemed to follow the gender roles of the day back then and didn’t hug me much as I got older. By the time I was a teenager, I didn’t hug anyone else except my grandmother.

I clearly remembered that when I was sixteen, I left on a trip with a group of boys to tour a college in the middle west America. As we entered the college, we were greeted there by an old professor. He was over six and a half feet tall with huge arms and a powerful voice. And as he greeted us, he gave each one of us a huge hug. When my turn came, I felt scared but stepped forward and hugged him back. I felt warmth in my heart as he shared his loving kindness. I felt peace and joy in my spirit as well. It was amazing.

Later that day, I began to wonder why I had ever stopped giving and receiving hugs when they brought so much joy. When my children were born, I decided to never stop hugging them and telling them I loved them, no matter how old they grew. As time went by, my children got used to my hugs and they learned to offer to hug me and others.

Emma was very excited Today was the championship baseball game! The winners would all get trophies(奖杯) and be the number one players in the town. Emma decided to bring home a trophy to put on her shelf. She had never won a trophy before.

She put on her red uniform and pulled her hair through the back of her baseball cap. She picked up her gloves and looked in the mirror. “I hope I get a hit today,” she said to herself.

On the way to the field, Emma felt nervous.

“Are you feeling OK, Emma?” her mother asked.

“I really don’t want to strike out(三击不中出局),” Emma said.

“Just keep your eye on the ball and don’t feel afraid. You can do it,” Emma’s mother said.

Emma was a great hitter in practice, but she had never hit a ball during a game. She always struck out.

When the game started, Emma cheered loudly for her friends. She caught a fly ball in the Outfield, and everyone cheered for her. Emma struck out when it was her turn to hit the ball, but her team was doing well.

The game was tied(平局), and it was her team’s last chance to score. The team’s coach encouraged, “Believe in yourselves, and you are the best.” Frankie was up first, and he hit the ball hard to get on base(垒). Next up was Henry, but he struck out. Kara hit the ball, but she was tagged out at first base. Frankie was able to run to third. That meant he could score and win the game if the next batter(击球手) got a good hit.
