6 . Book clubs are a great way to meet new friends or keep in touch with old ones, while keeping up on your reading and taking part in lively and interesting discussions. If you’re interested in starting a book club, you should consider the following options and suggestions.

The first thing you’ll need is your members. Think carefully about how many people will participate and what the club’s focus will be. For example, some book clubs focus only on fiction, others read nonfiction. All of these possibilities can make for a great club, but it is important to decide on a focus at the beginning so the guidelines (准则) will be clear to the group and potential members.

After making the basic preparations, recruitment (招募) can begin. Try to invite friends and family, advertise in the local newspapers, stores, colleges, libraries, and bookstores. When enough people express interest, schedule a kick-off meeting during which decisions will be made about useful guidelines that will ensure the club runs smoothly. This meeting will need to determine where the group will meet; how often the group will meet, and on which day of the week and at what time; how long the meetings will be; how books will be chosen and by whom; who will lead the group; and whether snacks will be served and if so, who will supply them. By the end of this meeting, these guidelines should be set and a book selection and date for the first official meeting should be fixed.

Planning and running a book club is really challenging, but when a book club is run effectively, the experience can be extremely happy and satisfying for everyone.

7 . How to Make Good Oral Presentations

Talk to the Audience

We do not mean to face the audience, although gaining eye contact with as many people as possible when you present is important, since it adds a level of intimacy (亲近) and comfort to the presentation. We should prepare presentations that address the target audience. Be sure you know who your audience is—what are their backgrounds and knowledge level of the material you are presenting and what they are hoping to get out of the presentation.

    1

A common mistake of inexperienced presenters is to try to say too much. They feel the need to prove themselves by proving to the audience that they know a lot. As a result, the main message is often lost, and valuable question time is usually reduced. A side effect of too much material is that you talk too quickly, and the audience can’t follow you.

    2

Not everyone can have a chance to stand on a real stage before they make an oral presentation because the price is too high. Even if you are rich enough, the stage is not always empty for you. So why not use your own living room to better your oral presentation? Imagine the floor is the stage, and the chairs are your audience. Several times later and you will get more confidence.

    3

The more you practice, the more likely you will know the time exactly. The more presentations you give, the better result you are going to get. An important talk should be given for the first time to an audience of family, classmates or friends. Repeat this for several times and collect advice. More importantly, when you give the presentation, stick to what you practice.

A.Treat the Floor as a Stage (舞台)
B.Remember: Less is More
C.Remember to Speak Loudly
D.Practice and Time Your Presentation

8 . It was bad enough when COVID- 19 closed schools in Philadelphia, US, in March. Like a lot of students, Makyla Linder, 16, found herself getting bored. So she started watching baking videos and shows on TV and online. Soon, she started baking on her own.

Cupcakes and chocolate-covered strawberries were her first creations.

“I tried them on my friends when they came to my house,” Linder sad. “I also tried them on my family. They said my creations were good.”

For most children, that would have been enough. But Linder had bigger ideas. She asked her mom - what if she started selling her baked goods?

9 . If Albuquerque Police Officer Ryan Holets had his way, this story would never have got so much attention. CNN would not have learned that Holets, while on duty, had agreed to adopt a baby from a homeless drug addict.

Holets values his privacy and didn’t do it for the attention. He did it just because he knew it was the right thing to do.

On Sept. 23, Holets responded to a call about a possible theft from a convenience store in Albuquerque. By the time he arrived, the thief was no longer there, but Holets spotted a woman in a grassy area behind the store about to inject a needle into her companion’s arm. The woman, Crystal Champ, was eight months pregnant.

After a short conversation, he learned Champ longed for her child to go to a good family. Holets offered to do just that.

When Sergeant Jim Edison learned what Holets did, he was floored. In his 10 years as a police officer, he has seen many “heroic acts” but none like what Holets did, Edison said.

Edison awarded Holets for his outstanding service for the city, but felt that wasn’t enough. It’s his job to reward his officers and encourage them to do the right thing, so Edison signed Holets up to do an interview for CNN’s “Beyond the Call of Duty”series without telling him.

“Every day Edison calls me to ask for forgiveness.” Holets said laughing, “And I keep assuring him that we're fine. We didn’t quite realize it would get this response, and neither did he. But we all realize it’s a really good thing, and some really good things can come of it.”

One of Holets’s conditions when he agreed to CNN’s interview was that his superiors would not set up a GoFundMe page for his family. “We don’t want anybody to say we've used this occasion to enrich ourselves,” Holets said. He instead urges those who want to offer support to donate to a local drug recovery center or adoption organization.

4. What did Holets expect people to do?
A.Raise money for families like his.
B.Support the police’s routine work.
C.Make donations to adoption organizations.
D.Set up an organization to help the homeless.
