文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了人们对攀岩日益感兴趣,介绍了攀岩的过程以及面临的困难和攀岩的好处。

1 . People believe that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you’re wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms. Here, people are learning on special climbing walls. The climbing wall goes straight up and has small holding places for hands and feet.

How do people climb the wall? To climb need special shoes and a harness around your chest to hold you. There are ropes tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don’t fall. A beginner’s wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it’s easy to see the new piece of metal. Sometimes, it’s not. The most difficult is to control your fear. It’s normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it’s difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.

Climbing attracts people because it’s good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger.

1. What can we infer from the passage?
A.People are fairly interested in climbing nowadays.
B.It is impossible to build up one’s body by climbing.
C.People can only learn the skill of climbing outdoors.
D.It is always easy to see holding places in climbing.
2. The most difficult thing to do in wall climbing is        .
A.to tie ropes to your harnessB.to control your fear
C.to move away from the wallD.to climb straight up
3. What does the underlined word “workout” in the last paragraph most probably mean?
A.Settlement.B.Exercise.C.Excitement.D.Tiredness.
4. Where do you suppose this text comes from?
A.A science book.B.A research report.
C.A sports magazine.D.A sports history book.

2 . 阅读下面短文, 根据内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

There are many benefits of public transportation. For example, public transportation makes it easier for people to get where they want and need to go. It also helps people save money, as the cost of maintaining a working vehicle is often much more than the cost associated with public transportation. The frequency of traffic jams and accidents may also be reduced when a person uses public transportation.

One of the main benefits of public transportation is the fact that it makes it easier for people to get around. Without public transportation, many people — especially those without cars — would be limited in where they could go and what they could do. With public transportation, however, people can get to school and work, get to the grocery store and to doctors’ offices, and visit relatives, even if they do not own vehicles. Public transportation serves people of all ages and from all walks of life, ranging from families, including their children, to business people on their way to the office, to the elderly.

Often, people complain about the cost of public transportation when the rates are raised. When compared to the cost of buying a car, many people find that choosing to ride public transportation is a much cheaper option.

When public transportation is available, many people choose to use it instead of driving to work and school. This is true even of many people who own cars, as they may prefer to ride to work on a bus or train rather than deal with traffic jams and parking frustrations each day. When people make this choice, the result is less traffic on the roadways, which means fewer traffic jams and less pollution. In fact, the choice many people make to ride public transportation may even translate into fewer car accidents and vehicle-related deaths and injuries. Additionally, the use of public transportation also means less gas is consumed each year.

5 . Every year, more books on happiness are published. And every year, more people feel depressed because they do not see themselves as happy. They don’t remember or know what it feels like, and instead, they feel guilty that they aren’t as happy as everyone says they should be. This is really a sad state of emotional affairs.

The books, blogs, YouTube videos and advice columns (专栏) will tell you that if you read, exercise, stay busy, help others, and increase your intimacy (亲密) every day, then you too can be happy.

The simple truth is that no one can be happy all the time. That doesn’t mean you have to be sad, angry, or depressed the rest of the time but that you can find a middle ground called contentment. This middle ground is a good place mentally and emotionally, and spending time there is a healthy choice.

Contentment is somewhere between satisfied and peaceful. When you are in that place, the stuff of life can be going on around you, but you don’t need to allow it to bother you. And that, my friends, is a very nice way to go through life.

I find contentment in walks and in writing, and in talking with my partner and reminding each other that our life is good, despite temporary setbacks or scary moments. Because I know about myself and I can respond differently. Doing this takes away stress and will keep you from losing your state of contentment.

If there is even one thing that puts you in a state of contentment — you do it regularly and early enough each day — it will help you go through any challenges you may have to face later.

Right at this moment, things around me are still a little out of my control — such is life — but I am feeling pretty good because I actively living my purpose. I am now content, and that feeling will last the whole day through. You can do the same.

1. What does the author want to stress by mentioning “Books on happiness in paragraph 1?
A.People find it difficult to agree on what happiness is.
B.Such books are so popular that they are sold out very soon.
C.Happiness is something easy to gain in our daily life.
D.Experts find it useless to argue about the value of happiness.
2. When facing setbacks or sad moments, what does the author do?
A.He turns to such media as blogs.
B.He definitely communicates with partners.
C.He adjusts himself and reacts positively.
D.He sees himself unlucky and feels depressed.
3. What is the author most likely to agree with?
A.Still water runs deep.B.Health is better than wealth.
C.Enough is as good as a feast.D.One good turn deserves another.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To introduce a novel experience.
B.To advocate a proper life attitude.
C.To encourage studies on happiness.
D.To persuade us to work endlessly.

By Steven Ashmore

When traveling, I always look for museums and sites that have evening hours. We went to the Barbican Gallery on a Thursday evening and caught their recent Lee Krasner exhibition. It was fabulous. The gallery is two levels with numerous smaller spaces, making the exhibition an interesting and enjoyable experience.

By Laura Miller

I have just watched To Kill a Mockingbird here. The play and actors were fantastic. Nice and clean ladies’ toilets with hot water. During the break, they were selling the usual ice cream and drinks. Not all staff were friendly, but most were. I would come again to watch another show or even the same one.

10 . In this digital age, people measure their popularity by the number of likes and followers they get on social media. But as it turns out, people are happiest when their friends are high quality – not high quantity.

Scientists from the University of Leeds, UK, studied data from two online surveys of nearly 1,500 people. Those who took the survey gave details about their age, social interactions, and how satisfied they were with their social lives. The researchers found that those who had a small number of close friends generally tended to be happier than those who had a large number of superficial(关系浅表的)friends.

“Loneliness has less to do with the number of friends you have, and more to do with how you feel about your friends,” said Wandi Bruine de Bruin, one of the researchers.

Bruine de Bruin found that older people tended to have smaller social circles than young people, but the people in these circles tended to be closer to them.

Younger people, on the other hand, tended to have bigger circles that were made up of “peripheral(次要的)others” – people who are not true friends, but just people they know. These people had no influence on the younger interviewees’ happiness.

The results of the study show that the opinion society has about old people being sad and lonely might not be accurate.

“The research shows that older adults’ smaller networks didn’t prevent social satisfaction and happiness. In fact, older adults tend to report better well-being than younger adults,” said Bruine de Bruin.

1. According to the study, people tend to be happier when they _____.
A.have a small circle of close friends
B.are satisfied with their work and lives
C.have a lot of followers on social media
D.make friends with people who are older
2. What do we know from Paragraphs 4 and 5?
A.Older people’s friends seem to be of higher quality.
B.Young people don’t need to make peripheral friends.
C.Older people’s happiness has nothing to do with their friends.
D.Both old and young people find it hard to make close friends.
3. Which word might Bruine de Bruin use to describe older adults?
A.Sad.B.Happy.
C.Lonely.D.Superficial.
4. What is the focus of the story?
A.Different types of friends.
B.Changes in people’s happiness levels.
C.Interactions between old and young people.
D.The relationship between happiness and number of friends.
