2 . Four unique European music traditions that are protected by UNESCO
Inuit drum dancing, Greenland
In 2021, UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) recognised Greenland’s Inuit drum dancing and singing as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) of humanity. The drum dance typical of the tradition can be performed by one dancer alone or accompanied by a group of people singing songs about love, humour and hunting.
Uilleann piping, Ireland
Uilleann piping was included in the UNESCO’s list in 2017. It involves playing Irish music on a particular type of bagpipe (风笛) known as the “uilleann”. It is a highly developed and complex instrument, with some functions that cannot be found elsewhere. It often accompanies music played at weddings and parties, and it’s been passed on through several generations of Irish musicians.
Kaustinen folk music, Finland
In 2019, UNESCO added to its list Finland’s Kaustinen folk music, a tradition where the violin, with or without accompanying instruments, is played by ear. The style is characterised by rhythms or accents that make it easy to dance to. The 250-year-old tradition is played during wedding parties, public concerts and at music festivals in the small village of Kaustinen.
Fado, Portugal
Fado music, which originated in Portugal in the early 19th century, is now a symbol of Portuguese culture and tradition. It combines poetry and music to create a sometimes sorrowful, and always passionate melody, usually performed by a solo singer accompanied by guitars. It was included in the UNESCO’s list in2011.

3 . My first dependant was a duck called Mr. Kite. As a cream-faced four-year-old, it was my job at the nursery to turn the eggs in the incubator (恒温箱) every day: one side “O”, the other side “X”.
We lived in a small, inner-city house with a long, thin garden in east Oxford at the time. As a gentle-hearted vet's (兽医的) daughter, my mum couldn't resist adopting these ducks. I named them Buttercup, Mr. Kite and Drakey. We made them a pond. The bottom was a mosaic (马赛克) made from all the bits of plate and cup that had been broken during family rows. Within 30 seconds, the pond was so full of duck droppings that we never saw the mosaic again.
One of the most magical moments during my caring for ducks was the night it snowed. Mum, over whelmed by pity and grandmotherly concern, insisted that Mr. Kite and her friends — yes, Mr. Kite was female — be spared another freezing night in the wooden house my dad had built for them at the end of the garden; we caught them, flapping and shouting, and brought them in to sleep in the kitchen.Have you ever seen three ducks go wild in a tiny kitchen? It was one of the best moments of my childhood. It smelled like the underside of hell's socks by the time they had left.
I used to spend my summers lazing in a swimming pool with Mr. Kite and the others. Eventually, though, our neighbour complained that they were being woken at 4:45 a.m.. So, the feathered three went to live with an old couple in the country. Fair enough — you don't move to the city to have the dawn torn apart by quacking — although it must have made a change from student parties and the sound of 19-year-olds being sick by the bins.
I wonder now if this early experience of duck adoption is the reason that, at least three times a week, what ever the weather, you will find me swimming in the Thames or a nearby lake with the ducks. Although they never say hello.

Most people visit the park between May and September since the weather is warmer.
Canyonlands National Park
Although it’s the 23rd largest National Park in the US, Canyonlands is the largest out of the four national parks in Utah. The best time of the year to visit is when the weather is pleasant in the spring and fall. The park has four main parts: The Maze, Island in the Sky, The Needles, and Horseshoe Canyon. If you plan to visit every part, you can go on a boat tour to explore it.
Arches National Park
Known as a red-rock wonderland, Arches National Park is popular for its stone arches (石拱).The park has over 2,000 stone arches, with Landscape Arch the largest. The Mackintosh House, Glasgow
Located on the site of the former home of legendary architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife, the reconstructed Mackintosh House offers a rare insight into their private lives. Furnished with the couple’s own furniture, everything has been considered in order to recreate the original interior as faithfully as possible.
Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, Cornwall
Though she was born in Yorkshire, British sculptor (雕塑家) Barbara Hepworth moved to Cornwall and stayed there for the rest of her life. 7 . If your books are piled up all over the place or you find yourself always digging through piles looking for that novel you’ve been meaning to read, it may be time to reorganize.
Organize your books by genre (体裁)
Organize your books by the author’s last name
Sorting by the author’s last name is a classic way to organize. If you have an especially large collection, sorting by author will make it a lot easier to locate a given book when you want it.
For a narrower collection, arranging the books by subject makes sense. If you’re a huge poetry buff, you could separate your Romantic collections, postmodern books, and objectivity poetry. If you’re super into historical nonfiction, give World War I its own shelf, the Civil Rights Movement another shelf, and books about the United Nations in another area.
Organize your books by how much you like them
Put your favorites up top and your least favorites at the bottom. This is going to be totally subjective, but it may be fun to spend an evening taking the books down and assessing how you feel about it.
A.Organize them by subject |
B.Display the books you use the most |
C.Did a book completely change your life |
D.Look for a book written by James Joyce |
E.Want to read the book over and over again |
F.Luckily, you have a ton of choices to organize and display them |
G.Separating books by types will make you quickly find the book you want |
8 . When I was young, I had no idea what I wanted to do. The choices were thin. It was assumed (假定的) that I’d go to college, and after, that I could be a mom. I could, be a secretary. I could be a nurse or a teacher. If anyone asked, I said I wanted to be a writer. Even I knew that wasn’t a real job. Mostly, I didn’t think about it.
But just as I was coming of age, a world of possibility opened up. By the time I graduated from college with a science degree, I still didn’t know what I wanted to do. And one day, after seeing a notice in the paper, I remembered there was something I’d wanted to do, once. It sounded fun, so I took the test to be a mail carrier. The new Postal Service was by law an inclusive group. If you got a good enough score, you were in.
It was an older woman conducting (执行) my fitness entry exam who was the first to disagree. This wasn’t a job for a girl, she said. And I shouldn’t take a man’s job away from him. He has a family to support. Despite that poor assumed man’s family, I became one of perhaps a dozen female carriers in the whole city of Portland, Oregon.
On the street, I was a novelty (新奇的人). I didn’t go a single day without hearing some friendly words: Well, I guess we can’t call you the mailman, can we? We’ll have to call you the mail-woman! Those particular words somehow appeared naturally in thousands of minds at once. My existence received attention. It’s hard to imagine now.
Thirty-two years later I retired into a very different world. Being a retired mail carrier is even more fun than being a mail carrier. And finally, I get to be a writer. It’s still not really a job.
1. What can we know about the author when she was young?A.She had no plan for her future. |
B.She studied hard to be a writer. |
C.She never wanted to go to college. |
D.She knew little about what a real job was. |
A.She could do nothing else after her graduation. |
B.She thought it interesting to be a mail carrier. |
C.She got a high score in the test to be a mail carrier. |
D.She was bored with studying for a science degree. |
A.Supportive. | B.Careless. | C.Unclear. | D.Negative. |
A.To stress the importance of a career plan. |
B.To share the story of her career options. |
C.To show the fun of being a mail carrier. |
D.To express her regret about her job choice. |
