5 . I have only given blood once. The Red Cross trailer pulled into our school and _________ students to donate. Most of us were attracted by the promise of free cookies. Missing math class was a _________, too.

The process was painless but _________, and the nurse had just removed the needle when the bell rang for the next period to begin. I grabbed my cookies and climbed stairs to the _________. By the time I opened the door, I was lightheaded, with a _________ feeling in the stomach. In the following years, the few times when I tried to donate, the terrible feelings _________ me. Gradually, the idea fell off my radar.

But ideas always change with _________. Early in my cancer treatment while I watched the blood enter my veins, it suddenly dawned on me that for each blood product donated, there was a breathing man who _________ it, just like me. I am_________ by the fact that platelets (血小板) are bright yellow, like the sun. It is surely a __________ that a part of one person can save the life of another. We are designed to be interdependent, to understand that each of us can indeed __________ other people. That’s a remarkable thing, something we often __________ in the fast-paced era when everyone is busy with their own business.

I am grateful for the generous __________ whose kindness has allowed me to __________ my weakened body and live to fight another day. The Greek word agape means “love with action,” which is concerned with the greater __________ of another. And to so many, myself included, that’s exactly what blood donation has been.

6 . Join the Virtual Book Club

Join our virtual community, which will introduce you to fellow alumni (校友) across industries, generations, and geographies all while gaining different perspectives by reading the book.

Why Join

Reading is good for you. It can reduce stress and increase your emotional intelligence and your creativity. The facilitated book club will also provide new insights to make you more effective in areas including leadership and communications skills, which will help you become a lifelong learner.

How It Works

Joining is completely free. You just have to get a copy of the book to enjoy. Then you can participate anywhere you have Internet access and on days and times that are convenient for you.

The book club will connect through a private forum where all participants can discuss the current book and network with each other. It will have a leader from Professional Book Club (PBC) Guru who manages the forum, shares relevant articles and facilitates conversation about topics in the book. Members will be encouraged to post and share as well.

The Books

The book club will read one book every two months so that you’ll have plenty of time for each book. We will vote among several options each period and decide on the book to read according to reader interests. Feel free to name specific titles and include things like “not too technical” or “easy but informative reads.” Our May to July Selection: Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. If you have between 1 and 1.5 hours a week to read, you should be fine.

7 . One Sunday, we arrived home from a wedding to find our neighbors siting among a pile of buckets, bot les, and anything they could fill water in. After inquiring, they said they had been waiting for the water truck. In some parts of Johannesburg, South Africa, homes have not had water in their taps for weeks and months on end.

Thankfully, my dad’s planning ahead blessed our home with a precious borehole (钻井) that provides us with freshwater every day. Sometimes, because we are off the grid (网格), we are not even aware of what is happening around us, especially with the lack of water-until we see people queuing up, waiting for the water trucks the government sends. Often, the trucks are late or run out of water before reaching our street.

In the spirit of Ubuntu, a Zulu (祖鲁语) term meaning humanity that also translates to: “I am because we are”, we encouraged the neighbors to collect their water from our borehole. We opened the gate and connected the pipe. Very quickly, the word spread, and old and young gathered with various-sized containers to collect this life-giving liquid. There was much laughter and chatter, along with some singing as bucket after bucket was filled. It was heartwarming to watch the young help the elderly carry their water home before returning for their own bucket. And as long as our family’s borehole is working, we practice Ubuntu.

“It is not safe to let strangers on to your property,” some say. But humanity drives us to take the risk because the burden is lessened when shared. It is what we need for our collective survival.

A simple act of sharing water has spread hope in the community that we can overcome the difficulties we face together.

8 . Monet: The Immersive (沉浸式) Experience

Monet: The Immersive Experience in Liège invites you to step into the world of the French painter Claude Monet, one of the greatest artistic geniuses of the nineteenth century!

Explore some of the most breathtaking paintings by Claude Monet with the help of a digital 360-degree presentation. The unique exhibition concept is staged with state-of-the-art multimedia technology, which shows very large images of Monet’s paintings on the walls and floors of the building. It has music, the smell of flowers, and voice-over in several languages to make the paintings come alive in a way never seen before.

To fully get into the world of the French painter, visitors are guided through three experience rooms. Each room is a highlight on its own and provides visitors not only with an insight, but also with new experiences and new viewpoints on Monet’s life, his work and his masterpieces.

9 . The Best Computer Science Competitions for High Schoolers

Microsoft runs the competition, and each year, students around the world compete in it. Students work in teams of up to three members to design a tech solution to a social or health problem.

Qualification: Student must be 16 or older.

Prizes: Each winning team is awarded $100,000.

Students work in teams of at least 10 along with 2 adult mentors to design and build an industrial-sized robot. They then must program the robot to compete in a sophisticated field game at competitions. Annual team registration fees are usually about $5,000.

Qualification: High school students in the U.S.,

Prizes: Various scholarships and cash prizes for top scorers.

It is designed to get more girls worldwide interested in coding and computer science. Girls work in teams of 1-5 and with volunteer mentors to use technology to design an app that helps solve real world problems such as climate change and hunger.

Qualification: Must identify as female and be between 10 and 18 years old.

Prizes: Prizes and scholarships up to $2,000.

To compete, your school has to have registered and paid the registration fee. Before the competition, the coach teaches coding with a focus on ACSL exam categories. Then, students work in teams of 3 or 5 students to complete four tests. Students can code in Python 3, Java 8, or C++ as defined on the programming platform. Top-scoring teams advance to regional, statewide, and eventually global competitions.

Qualification: Students whose schools have registered for the competition.

Prizes: Winners of the ACSL All-Star Contest receive prizes.

10 . Four best scenic paths near London

This path is far from boring for a rural walk. The footpath follows the curve of the river as it flows south, winding past wildflower grassland, and the Hartslock Nature Reserve, which is home to red kites and rare orchids.

Post-walk pub: The Swan serves these days. Order a table or keep warm by one of its open fires.

Admire the glorious views and escape the crowds. But first you’ve got to climb 272 steps to the top of Box Hill. The endorphins are definitely pumping—maybe that’s how it got the nickname “Happy Valley”.

Post-walk pub: The spacious Tree on Box Hill has an enticing menu and huge beer garden.

Following the path, you’ll pass plenty of former smugglers’ (走私者) caves and there are beachside cafes dotted along the route at regular intervals.

Post-walk pub: Order a pint of beer at Xylo, a pub with wonderful views over Margate Sands.

It isn’t home to any chess masters, but it did used to produce n lot of watercress, fed by its sparkling chalk stream. This walk follows the river, whose bank is covered with the rolling grass and woods.

Post-walk pub: The George & Dragon is an old coaching inn with a log fire and real beer.
