文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章为家长们介绍了四个适合青少年暑期进行海外交流学习的项目。

1 . Here are the major ways for your teens to gain international experience during a summer abroad:

1. Summer Teen Volunteer Programs

Volunteering abroad offers a unique insight into another culture. Programs can teach much, while strengthening a commitment to the life of volunteering. Amigos International offers immersive programs that include leadership training, along with volunteering. Visions Service International shows ways for your teens to be a teen without borders through service work and cross-cultural living.

2. Summer Study Abroad Programs

Study abroad is my passion — there’s something unique about studying in another country that makes the subject matter come alive, from archaeology to literature. Studying abroad in high school, whether for a summer or on exchange, can get your teens excited about learning again. For those who can’t afford it, there are many ways of financing study abroad, including government programs to fund language learning overseas.

3. Summer Adventures and Cultural Travel Abroad

Maybe your teen is more drawn to adventure. There are many opportunities for adventures abroad — the best programs combine adventures with language learning, cultural activities, and community service, so that adventurous teens get the best of both worlds. Broadreach offers more than 70 summer adventures in more than 40 countries, including marine biology, sailing, language immersion, culture, arts, community service, leadership, and outdoor skills.

4. Summer Language Immersion (沉浸)

Some language learning programs also provide volunteer opportunities. This can be an ideal way to study by helping others. Intercultural Costa Rica also includes cultural activities and tours. The Alpine French School provides both language learning and cultural and outdoor activities. French Summer Classes is a unique opportunity for your teen to have a homestay and the language program in one place. Whatever language program your teen chooses, the chance to learn language through immersion is, as research has shown, the best way to not only learn a language, but gain academic, cultural, and employment benefits.

Start Looking Now and Change Your Teen’s Life!

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了热线项目“PepToc”是如何产生的以及它的意义。

2 . Students at West Side Elementary School in California, with the help of their art teacher, created a telephone hotline to offer cheerful advice during difficult times. In just days, the hotline began getting thousands of calls an hour. The hotline, available in English and Spanish, offers the happy voices of children of different ages sharing positive messages.

Most people agree that with concerns like Covid-19, extreme weather, and the climate crisis, the last years have been stressful.

“To hear the pure joy from kids is extremely comforting in these difficult times,” art teacher Jessica Martin says.

Ms. Martin called the project “Pep Talk”, which later changed to “PepToc” to draw an ad for the hotline. The project had two parts, one the hotline, and the other creating encouraging posters. Along with artist Asherah, she worked with students from kindergarten to sixth grade. Students working on the hotline thought of what they would like to say. When they were ready, Ms. Martin recorded each one. Later, she sorted out the recordings into the different parts of the telephone hotline. For example, pressing 2 results in words of encouragement and life advice. This includes messages like: “The world is a better place with you in it.” and “You are okay!” Pressing 4, you hear the sounds of children laughing — a sound certain to bring a smile to anyone’s face. Other students took part in making encouraging posters to hang up around the town. Many posters had strips of paper that people passing by could tear off and take with them.

Ms. Martin thought the project would attract interest from people near the school. But word of the hotline spread quickly on social media. The hotline has become popular with stressed adults, patients in hospitals, older people in homes, and others to beat stress by hearing the happy voices of children.

1. What’s the purpose of the telephone hotline?
A.To get people to express themselves.

A.To satisfy the need of an advertisement.
B.To make it attractive to people of all ages.
C.To add to the humorous effect of the hotline.

3. What did Ms. Martin do after making the recordings?
A.She sorted out the most cheerful information.
B.She advertised them in the local radio station.

5 . As is known to all, true beauty comes from within, but sometimes it’s not easy to know how to explain it.     1    .

Inner beauty is in the everyday choices you make.

When we are faced with small, daily choices such as whether to tell a white lie to avoid trouble, our inner beauty or lack thereof comes out.     2    . Honesty is real inner beauty. While no one is perfect, inner beauty will show itself in the repeated choices a person makes.

    3    .

I’ve known several people who were pretty on the outside, but when they said unkind words, they suddenly looked so ugly! True beauty comes from within and often comes out through your words.

Inner beauty is in how you respond to (应对) mistakes.

When someone makes a mistake and it annoys you, how do you respond? True beauty comes from within when someone is understanding. Someone without inner beauty will be angry. And when you are the one who made a mistake, how do you respond? Do you accept it and move on, giving yourself room to grow? A person with inner beauty doesn’t see mistakes as threats.     4    .

Inner beauty is on the outside.

If you look closely enough, you can see inner beauty from the outside.     5    . And the truth is that when people get to know you, inner beauty is all there really is. 文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。讲述了作者的钥匙丢失了,上面有自己的孙子做的铁心,作者非常懊恼。结果邻居前来归还了作者的钥匙,作者非常感动。

6 . Returning from an early-morning walk with my dog, I dug in my pockets for the keys to the front door but failed. I decided to return to find them.

I spent an hour looking for the keys, but the keys remained lost. At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch thinking. The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. I had a spare car key, but the iron heart made by my grandson was precious. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes. I blamed myself for not being more careful. In my head, I reflected on my steps but finally gave up. Life is too short to get worried over these things.

For some reason, I continued the day without beginning the various tasks of getting replacements. That night, it began to snow. I settled into a peaceful evening. It was peaceful until I heard the scream of my car alarm. I rushed to the car, opened it, and stopped the alarm. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next-door neighbors being annoyed.

I went back in the house, and the next sound was the front doorbell. Assuming it was a neighbor ready to complain, I opened the door with apologies ready.

In the light snow stood three neighbors from several streets away. One of them held out my keys with a smile! I wanted to hug her, but in a COVID world, all I could do was say. “Oh, my goodness! Thank you!” She said, “Sorry about the alarm. We had to press it to find your home!” Pressing the alarm until I heard a car alarm wouldn’t have occurred to me. I was astonished by her clever kindness and wished I could have hugged her. Instead, I hugged the keys.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。虽然有观点认为无籽水果有害,但实际上无籽水果与有籽水果在营养上的差异不大,且受欢迎程度很高。

7 . One thing that has always attracted us is the food taboos (禁忌). There is one that seems to be acknowledged in the West: the idea that seedless (无籽) fruits are dangerous.

For those unfamiliar with this belief, it seems to go like this. The basic function of fruit in nature is to spread the seeds of the plant to ensure the survival of the species. When fruits are seedless, however, it is meant to be a sign that they want to give up their basic function. According to more extreme views, these fruits not only have fewer vitamins and minerals, but also are actually harmful to humans.

In fact, from the view of science, seedless fruits are the result of a biological development. While it is true that this development can be the result of human actions, it also happens in nature all the time. Often, it is a combination of both.

What effect does the absence of seeds have on nutrition (营养)? Well, seeds do often contain nutrients like fibre, which can mean seed-containing fruits are a little bit higher in fibre. They can also contain potentially beneficial nutrients. This, however, will make a difference only when you eat up the seeds, bite them with your teeth and break the seeds in a digestible form.

Then there is the question of popularity. It doesn't matter how nutrient-packed a crop is if people are unwilling to eat it. While the nutritional difference between seeded and seedless is very small, we know that the sale of seedless fruits has greatly increased since seedless forms were introduced to the market. So when seen in this wider viewpoint, rather than being a loss for nutrition in our diets, seedless fruits have been a gain for us human beings.

1. What do western people with extreme views believe?
A.Seedless fruits are the result of a biological process.
B.Seedless fruits could actually do harm to human beings.
C.Seedless fruits could have more vitamins and minerals.
D.Seedless fruits could spread seeds to ensure survival of the species.
2. Which of the following is true according to this passage?
A.Seedless fruits existed due to human actions rather than nature.
B.Biting seeds of fruits can be helpful to your teeth more or less.
C.Seedless fruits have no difference from fruits with seeds in nutrition.
D.Many people choose seedless fruits after its presence at the market.
3. What is the author's attitude towards seedless fruits?
A.UninterestedB.PositiveC.NegativeD.Cautious
4. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?
A.Well, Seed Or Seedless, That Is a Question
B.Yes, Fruits with Seeds Always Win Your Heart
C.No, There's Nothing Wrong with Seedless Fruits
D.Surprise! A New Study Supports Fruits without Seeds
