“Let’s invite the neighbors to a get-to-know-you party!” I announced to my wife, Sarah, and our 11-year-old twins, Olivia and Holly, as we pulled into the driveway of our new house.
The idea had come to me the day we moved in a month earlier. Every time we passed each basketball field and garden, my excitement grew. Families! I could picture us all hanging out together.
Now, here I was at the end of that driveway, sitting in my camp chair, having serious second thoughts. What if we wait a couple more months to hold a get-together? What if we get to know a few folks first? Anyway, I made the final decision.
Sarah rearranged bags of chips and popcorn in a basket she’d set out. “I hope we have enough,” she said. Olivia and Holly threw the beanbags to each other to pass the time. A week earlier, Sarah had designed the invitations, “Hello! We’re new to the neighborhood. The Miller Family. We’d love to meet you. Monday, July 5, anytime between 6 and 8 p. m. It would be great fun!”
Sarah and the girls had gone house to house, putting an invitation in their mailboxes on Whitney Drive, namely the Parkers, a single mother Sally with two kids and Mr. Davis. Coming home, the kids excitedly talked about the Willsons’, an elderly couple they me t in the neighborhood, who seemed to be quite interested when they told them about the party.
However, we hadn’t heard a word since. I checked my watch. 6:10. Maybe I’d misjudged. Sarah also had her doubts obviously. “Would we look silly sitting all alone in our front yard?” she said. “What if no one shows up?” I put my arm around her and drew her close. “We have to have faith,” I said. Then I took two bottles from the cooler I’d stored with juice boxes and cold drinks. Sarah and I clinked (碰杯) them together. “To our new neighborhood,” I said.

5 . A flood can develop slowly, over time or rapidly, as in the case of flash floods which can develop in just a few minutes and without signs of rain.
Create an evacuation plan in case you have to evacuate your home. Pay attention to the safe areas you can go to. Prepare food kits for natural disasters that you can easily take with you if you have to leave your house.
If there is a possibility of a flash flood, leave your home and move to higher ground at once. Do not wait for instructions to move. Evacuation may also cause a shortage in the food supply.
While evacuating, avoid walking through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving.

6 . Top cookbooks of 2023
The Wok: Recipes and Techniques by J.Kenji Lopez-AltThe Wok’s appeal is not innovation; you can find many dishes like Kung Pao Shrimp and Cumin Lamb on many Chinese restaurant menus. But you don’t have to leave your home. As far as I’m concerned, it’s worth the sticker price to learn the techniques.
Turkey and the Wolf: Flavor Trippin’ in New Orleans by Mason HerefordChef Mason Hereford has put to paper some of the magic that draws locals and tourists alike to his popular New Orleans sandwich shop, Turkey and the Wolf. 7 . You just heard you would have a math test on Friday--the same day as your history test. Are they crazy? How will you get all your study done? Don’t worry.
Start studying in school
Good learning methods are developed in the classroom as you take notes.
Note-taking is a way of remembering what you were taught or what read. Keep your notes organized by subject.
Plan your study time.
When you sit down to study, think about how much time you want to devote to each subject. Most people can keep focused for about 45 minutes a time.
Many teachers tell students ahead of time what format(总体安排)of an exam will be. This can help you decide how you study. For example, if you know you’ re going to have multiple-choice questions(选择题), you’ll know how to focus on studying facts and details. But if the exam contains non-multiple-choice questions, you’ll think about which topics are most likely to be covered and how you might answer questions on those topics.
Start a study group
Sometimes it can be useful to study with others. In this way you can make sure that your notes are correct and that you understand the subject.
A.Work hard all the time. |

8 . It was a hot summer day. I was trying to manage a crying baby and two sons at the library. One of my arms held the baby; the other balanced a few children’s books. The librarian checked my card, showed some pages of the books to me and told me that I had to pay fine. I knew it was my sons’ great work. As I reached in my pocket for my wallet, my heart sank. My wallet was sitting at home on the table.
I asked the librarian to hold the books for us, thinking I would run home to get the wallet. All of a sudden, a woman next to me handed the librarian $20, and asked her whether it was enough to pay my fine. The librarian looked confused as I was. I didn’t know the woman. Why was she paying my fine?
I told the woman that it was not that I didn’t have the money; it was just that I left my wallet at home and could went back to fetch it. She just said that I could do something kind for another person someday, and walked out.
I know how I felt after a stranger paid my library fine. I was pleased that someone I didn’t know would do something so kind. We falsely believe that only the big acts of kindness are meaningful. That’s simply not true. Not everyone can hand out $100 on the street, but everyone can say a kind word or do a simple and free action, which is also meaningful. The power of kindness is real.

10 . Best known as an author of fairy tales (童话), Hans Christian Andersen (1805—1875) wrote such children’s stories as The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, and The Emperor’s New Clothes. However, he was also an actor, a singer, and an artist. As an artist, he was particularly good at paper cutting.
Andersen had many reasons for making his paper cuttings, but the main one was to give pleasure. Andersen loved to tell his interesting stories to anyone who would listen. As he spoke, he would take out his scissors (剪刀) and make a wonderful paper cutting to help his words.
He also found that his paper cuttings helped with a better communication between himself and others. Although a shy man, he still loved to tell his stories face to face with his listeners. His stories and paper cuttings helped him to communicate when he would have otherwise felt uncomfortable.
The paper cuttings also became great gifts for friends and families. He would give his cuttings not only to children but also to grown-ups. When his writing became famous, these gifts were even more valued.
Now more than 100 years old, many of Andersen’s fine paper cuttings still exist in a museum in Denmark devoted to his works. While Andersen will always be remembered for his fairy tales, his beautiful works of art also remain for all to enjoy.
