That December, with Christmas approaching, my mother was out at work when I let myself into her bedroom one afternoon in search of a safety pin. I took the key hidden under the carpet, unlocked the door stepped in. Standing against the wall was a big, black bicycle with balloon tires. I recognized it instantly. It was the same second-hand bike I'd been admiring in a Baltimore Street shop window. Somehow my mother must have scraped together enough for a down payment and meant to surprise me with the bicycle on Christmas morning.
I was deeply moved by the discovery and yet sickened by the knowledge that, bursting into her room like this I had robbed her of the pleasure of seeing me astonished and delighted on Christmas day. I immediately backed out, put the key back in its hiding place, and thought over what to do.
I decided that between now and Christmas I must do absolutely nothing to reveal the slightest hint of my terrible knowledge. Nothing must deny her the happiness of seeing me completely amazed on Christmas day. I even started practicing my surprised face in front of the mirror, testing exclamations of delight:"Wow!""A bike with balloon tires! I don't believe it!"
The day finally came when Christmas arrived. My mother woke me and my sister early in the morning."Go see what Santa Claus brought to you."

5 . Either consciously or not, we spend our lives continually gathering knowledge, information, facts which help define who we are.
Each fact learned, each skill acquired should have a purpose. We should not, therefore, waste our time learning facts by rote(死记硬背), simply to pass exams. But the training of the mind to remember crucial pieces of information and to exercise is a vital part of our personal development.
We should not underestimate(低估)how much children can learn. In memorizing lines of poetry or play scripts, children's minds are spongelike(海绵状).
In recent years, however, the Internet has given us pause to re-visit the debate of skills versus knowledge and to look at what we need to commit to memory.
No one would argue about the value of learning information by heart, but there is a lot more "knowledge" to choose from now and we have better tools by which to sort, gather and store knowledge.
They lead us to focus instead on improving the technical and kills required to sort, prioritize and use the knowledge that lie therein. That fact, above all others, should be reflected in our schools.
For decades, schools have been notorious(臭名昭著的)for teaching the same topics or"facts."
I recently found my late father's History exercise book with its notes copied from 5ome authoritative tome(巨著), but without any real explanation or analysis. Ox-bow lakes were one favourite topic that my father learned about at school, that I learned about at school and then taught to my pupils in turn. Why? Why ox-bow lakes? Why nuclear physics and not nanotechnology(纳米技术)? How do we choose?
That is our responsibility.
