4 . We all know what it’s like when a conversation dies off and you’re left to sit in silence. There’s only one word to describe it: awkward.
Think of topics ahead of time.
Before attending a social event, think of a few “go-to” topics to jumpstart a dead conversation.
Ask questions that have more than one possible answer. Such questions are likely to get the person talking more. They help avoid resulting in short response. For example, instead of asking, “Did you like your high school?”, you could ask, “What did you like about your high school?”
Listen carefully and respond to their reactions.
Give a compliment (表扬).
This is always a safe bet, as long as it’s appropriate. For example, you could say, “I really like your shirt. Where did you get it?” This could move the conversation in another direction while making the other person feel good.
A.Ask open-ended questions |
B.Keep the conversation flowing |
C.It is important to express yourself |
D.As with any good conversation, the biggest key is to listen |
E.Stick to saying nice things if you’re trying to make small talks |

G.This will help you to fill the silences instead of struggling for words in the moment |

Yesterday evening I went to the supermarket near my home. When I was about to enter, I see an old lady with dirty hands calling me. At the first, I got afraid but then I decided to go ahead and find out that she wanted. She asked me about some money. She said I hadn’t eaten anything since that morning. I gave her some money and she happy went to a food stand and had her food. It made me realize we go shopping without think twice and then forget all about it in a few day. However, there are people who don’t even have money get a meal. I hope to spreading kindness to those in need in any possible way.

Last year, my friends and I had a trip. We started early and traveled for a few hour on a bus. When we arrived, everyone was tiring. While we were getting off the bus, I noticed a young man, standing very close one of my friends. Suddenly, I realized that she was trying to steal my friend’s wallet! I felt really nervous, and I knew I had to pick up courage to take action to stop him. Luckily, I saw two policemen and got a idea. So I fell over and cried out painful. The policemen heard that and came to help. Then I told them that was happening. They catch the thief right away. After that, we thanked for the policemen and went on with our trip happily.
8 . Adrian’s “Amazing Race” started early, when his parents realized that he, as a baby, couldn’t hear a thing, not even loud noises. In a special school for the hearing-impaired (听觉受损的), he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. However, the sight of all the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead a normal life. So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learned to read lips and pronounce words.
Later, Adrian’s parents decided to send him to a regular school. But the headmaster tried to stop them from doing so, saying regular schools couldn’t look after a student with special needs. His parents decided to take the risk and push him hard to go through his work every day because they wanted to prove that — given the chance, he could do anything. Adrian made the grade and got accepted. It was a big challenge. The pace was faster so he had to sit at the front of the class and really pay attention to the teacher, which wasn’t always easy. But he stuck to it and did a lot of extra work after school.
The effort made by Adrian and his parents paid off. Adrian graduated with good grades and got into a top high school. He also achieved a lot in life out of school. He developed a love for the outdoors and went to Nepal to climb mountains. He even entered the World Yacht (帆船) Race 18/19 — being the first hearing-impaired Asian to do so.
But none of these achievements would have been possible without one of the most important lessons from his mother. “If you believe in yourself and work hard, you can achieve great results,” she often said.
