文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章主要讨论了气候变化对滑翔伞运动的影响,并呼吁人们加入环保组织,减少化石燃料的使用,保护地球。

4 . My kitchen may be the best kitchen on the planet. That is because when I look out of its window can see the west side of Grandeur Peak. Grandeur Peak is one of the most attractive mountains in central Wasatch, with its animals, trees, morning clouds, evening sunset, and the mountain’s paragliders (滑翔伞运动员).

The number of paragliders flying above Grandeur Peak has grown over the past 15 years, so much so that they have become part of the mountain. But during the past year they have largely disappeared. Some paragliders told me that the wind became too strong to fly in. The wind is too strong! Is this another character of our changing climate (气候)? Will paragliding be a sport affected by a warming planet? Utah has been much windier in the past few years. For me, a scientist who studies living things, it is easy to believe that our future will be windier. This year it’s getting super-hot, and the planet is warming faster than scientists expected. I can’t help but worry that the future of paragliding in Utah is not bright.

I’m writing to the brave people who fly from Grandeur Peak with beautiful wings. I want you to join Clean The Dam Air, a group that’ s working hard to fight climate change and air pollution — I’m part of it too. We are introducing a measure, which aims to remove the state sales tax (税) on grocery store food and put a carbon tax on fossil fuels (化石燃料) in its place: gas, electricity produced from fossil fuels, and natural gas. The goal isn’t to make taxes higher. The idea is to encourage everyone to reduce their use of fossil fuels. So, paragliders, join us. Now is the time to take care of our planet. If we succeed, then Utah can be an example to others in fighting climate change.

1. Why does the author mention his kitchen?
A.To share his love of cooking dishes.
B.To bring back his memories of paragliding.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了研究表明,普通人服用维生素、矿物质和复合维生素补充剂并不能降低患病风险,也不能帮助延长寿命,建议应该关注有据可循的方法。

8 . Vitamins, minerals, and multivitamin supplements won’t protect you from cancer, heart disease, or help you live longer, the US preventive Services Task Force said in the new guidelines released Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association on June 21.

Following the release of the previous guidelines in 2014, the Task Force reviewed 84 studies testing vitamins in almost 700,000 people, including 52 new studies.

However, the conclusion is still the same as that of 2014: If you are a healthy adult who is not pregnant, there is not enough evidence of benefits to expand one’s life in taking vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin A, calcium tablets, carotene (胡萝卜素), vitamin B3, vitamin B6, vitamin C and other supplements. The Task Force does not recommend taking carotene supplements to prevent cardiovascular (心血管) disease or cancer, with enough evidence that it “may increase the risk of death, the death rate of cardiovascular disease and the risk of lung cancer”. Nor should people take vitamin E, “because vitamin E is not likely to be beneficial in reducing death, cardiovascular disease or cancer risk,” the Task Force said.

“Lifestyle recommendations for preventing chronic diseases (慢性病) should continue to focus on evidence-based methods, including balanced meals rich in fruits and vegetables and physical activity,” Dr. Jeffrey Linder, Director of General Internal Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University in Chicago, wrote in an additional commentary.

Take the Mediterranean diet for example. Eating the Mediterranean way, which focuses on a plant-based diet, physical activity and social engagement, can reduce the risk for high cholesterol, dementia (痴呆), memory loss, depression and breast cancer. And numerous studies found meals from the sunny Mediterranean region have also been linked to weight loss, stronger bones, a healthier heart and longer life.

Another evidence-based approach is the DASH diet, which stands for “dietary approaches to stop hypertension (高血压)”. Many studies have shown that this diet successfully reduces hypertension. Both the Mediterranean and DASH diets avoid processed foods and focus on fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

“Rather than focusing money, time, and attention on supplements, it would be better to emphasize lower-risk, higher-benefit activities...following a healthy diet, getting exercise, maintaining a health y weight, and avoiding smoking,” Linder and his colleagues wrote.

However, certain groups of people do need to take specific vitamins. Some seniors may need vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 supplements because they absorb fewer vitamins from food as they age. Because the elderly often have less sun exposure than younger people, they may need vitamin D supplements, but the dosage must be checked by the doctor, as too much vitamin D intake can be harmful.

1. What can we learn from the Task Force?
A.Vitamins must be useful to prevent cardiovascular disease or cancer.
B.Doctors want to control cardiovascular disease.
C.It’s necessary for all people to take vitamins.
D.In some regard, taking vitamins is not beneficial.
2. How many kinds of diets are mentioned to reduce death, cardiovascular disease or cancer risk?
A.OneB.Two.C.Three.D.Four.
3. According to the passage, who can take vitamins regularly?
A.A 40-year-old healthy worker.B.A 15-year old healthy boy.
C.A 34-year-old healthy lady.D.A 69-year-old healthy man.
4. What’s the main idea for the text?
A.The history of vitamins.
B.The functions of vitamins.
C.Taking vitamins to prevent diseases may fail.
D.People’s attitudes towards vitamins.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一种治疗黑色素瘤的肥皂。

9 . Heman Bekele, a 14-year-old student from Annandale, Virginia, has created a bar soap (肥皂) to treat melanoma, the most common kind of skin cancer, which earned him the title of America’s Top Young Scientist and a $25,000 cash prize after his innovation won first place in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

“I made this soap by mixing regular medicinal soap with different cancer fighting chemicals.” Bekele said in an interview. Rather than a cure, Bekele’s soap aims to help the patient’s immune cells stay active while fighting melanoma.

While similar methods are available for skin cancer treatments, his solution is a more affordable alternative, especially for those in developing countries. Though the product is very promising on paper, studies would have to be carried out to test its efficiency in the real world.

For now, the young scientist said he has a five-year plan: At the end of it, he hopes to have created a nonprofit organization where he can provide fair and accessible skin cancer treatment to as many people as possible. But to accomplish his goal, he would have to get his treatment through clinical trials, obtain a temporary patent and have it licensed by the Food and Drug Administration, he said.

“I applied for the 3M Young Scientist Challenge because I believe that young minds can make a positive impact on the world,” Bekele said. “I have always been interested in biology and technology, and this challenge gave me the perfect platform to showcase my ideas. The opportunity to work with 3M mentors and show my project to judges was an exciting prospect. I am passionate about finding sustainable solutions to global problems, and I hope to inspire others to do the same.”

1. Why does Bekele invent the bar soap?
A.To deal with a kind of skin cancer.
B.To reduce the cost of making soap.
C.To change people’s immune system.
D.To complete the task for 3M challenge.
2. What aspect of the soap does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Its making process.B.Its working method.
C.Its advantage.D.Its development.
3. What is Bekele’s next plan for his invention?
A.To create a company.
B.To get approval by the authority.
C.To promote the soap in the market.
D.To work with a nonprofit organization.
4. Which of the following can best describe Bekele?
A.Innovative and ambitious.B.Inspiring and tolerant.
C.Honest and accessible.D.Energetic and thoughtful.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了弥合不同群体之间的文化差异的几条建议。

10 . In this globalized era, it has become more and more common to work, live, befriend, and even create families with people of diverse backgrounds. In this sense, understanding how to bridge cultural gaps among various diverse groups is important. The better we understand each other, the less misunderstanding would occur.     1    .

Recognize cultural differences.

Be as open-minded as possible. Recognize cultural differences among the people you are communicating with.    2     before you know the person more in depth. It is a way to respect their differences.

Show respect.

3    . Some cultures show it more physically, like bowing in Japan. Others are less physical, but more on the verbal level, like in most Western cultures. Respect the way people express respect.

Speak clearly.

Speaking clearly means using concrete words, not abstract words, which can often confuse those who speak English as a foreign or second language. Use a calm and soft intonation as well, as people tend to take in information better when listening to a calming tone.

    4    .

With awareness and understanding of cultural differences, asking for clarification should not be hard. Offer clarification as well, so the person would feel you are doing your best to communicate meaningfully.

In short, bridging cultural gaps requires a respectful and honest communication where clarifying and asking for clarifications should come naturally.     5    . So is the final quality of the results.

A.Clarify and ask for clarification.
B.Here are some suggestions which help.
C.These points not only decide on the topic.
D.People tend to show respect with polite words.
E.The way you communicate is of great importance.
F.Every culture has a very special way to show respect.
G.Know that the behaviors are based on cultural backgrounds.
