1 . People tend to use trees for papermaking. But maybe electronics (电子) engineers are missing out on something here. “It turns out that two major building blocks of wood have a lot of electrical qualities,” says Magnus Berggren, a professor at Linköping University.
His team has been working to make parts for electronics from the forest. Right now, they’re focusing on two materials of trees. The first material is cellulose, which can make energy. Lignin, the second material, can store that energy, just as a battery does. The team has found when pressed, cellulose can produce electricity.
Some device must then store the electricity until it’s needed. Batteries can do this. But batteries aren’t very green. They have harmful materials. That’s where lignin comes in.
Batteries cause electrons to flow from one place to another, which can produce electricity. In a typical battery, one material must give electrons. The other must accept them. Lignin can do both. A weak acid (酸) encourages lignin to produce electrons. “With a metal wire (金属线) to guide those electrons, you’ll have electricity,” says Berggren.
Berggren’s team use this quality to create its new lignin-based battery. Typical batteries use a metal wire as a path to guide the flow of electrons into or out of the device. But since Berggren wants to make a battery of the forest, he looks for a natural way. Once again, he turns to cellulose.
This natural material can serve as a wire-like path for electrons. To make it work well, Berggren lines them with another chemical known as PEDOT, which isn’t from a tree. But when PEDOT is added to cellulose, they can conduct electricity like a wire. “With a weak acid, now you have a battery,” Berggren says. “And two of its three materials come from the forest.”
Berggren can imagine one day having mobile phone batteries made largely from forest products. Tree-based electronics might also be useful in lighting.

5 . You can travel alone, with friends, or with a tour group. They all have strong points and weak points.
The best thing about traveling alone is that you can do what you want to do. No waiting around in places you aren’t interested in, no missing a bus because your friend was late. This may sound selfish (自私的), but this is your experience. Your experience will be greatly improved by traveling alone. The main worry is loneliness, but believe me, it’s not difficult to talk to and meet people. Just remember everyone is in the same boat; everyone wants to meet new people, have fun and be friendly! There’s a problem of safety in some countries, especially for women traveling alone. You should always check the foreign office of your country for advice on safety. Buying a personal alarm (警报装置) is a good idea for women traveling alone.
Traveling with a friend does sound nice, but it depends on how well you get on. If you have similar interests or travel ideas, it should be wonderful. You will find it much cheaper to cook food in developed countries and share a room. However, a lot of people I meet traveling together don’t seem to be having as much fun and often go their separate (各自的) ways.
Tours are great when they go well. Some of my best memories (记忆) have been with tour groups. The key there is when they go well. A terrible tour guide, quiet group and terrible food can ruin our time. My advice would be never to do a tour that is too long except in countries with safety problems or poor transport.
All in all, traveling alone is the best, but it is good to mix it up. Invite a friend from home to meet you for a few weeks. Try a tour or two — some people love them — perhaps start with a day tour.

6 . Indoor food growing operations are seeing both successes and failures in the United States. Some companies in the food industry are investing (投资) even as competitors fail.
California-based Plenty Unlimited this summer began working on $300 million indoor plants, while Kroger announced that it would be increasing its availability of vertically (垂直地) farmed produce. Meanwhile, two indoor farming companies that got strong backing—New Jersey’s AeroFarms and Kentucky’s AppHarvest—filed for financial failure and reorganization. And a five-year-old company in Detroit, Planted Detroit, shut its doors this summer.
The industry changes do not worry Jacob Portillo, a grower with Eden Green Technology, an indoor farming company. “The fact that other people are failing and other people are succeeding is going to happen in any industry you go to,” he said.
Indoor farming refers to growing crops indoors, which experts sometimes call “controlled environment agriculture”. There are different methods. One method called vertical farming involves putting produce from floor to ceiling, often under artificial lights and with the plants growing in nutrient-enriched water. Other growers are trying very large greenhouses, indoor beds of soil in big buildings and using special robots for parts of the farming process.
Supporters say growing indoors uses less water and land and permits food to be grown closer to consumers, saving on transport. Indoor growing is also a way to protect crops from increasingly extreme weather caused by climate change.
But critics question the sustainability (可持续性) of operations that can require a lot of energy for artificial lights. And they say paying for that light can make profitability impossible. Curt Covington of AgAmerica Lending, a private investment company centered on agriculture, is not convinced that indoor farming operations can work—except in special cases. Given the high cost of indoor operations, Covington said, “It’s just hard to be very profitable.”
1. What is Jacob Portillo’s attitude to the indoor food growing industry?A.Positive. | B.Worried. | C.Unclear. | D.Doubtful. |

7 . Quizzes help students learn better
Did you know that if you quiz ( 测验) students once a week, they perform better on midterms and final exams?
Not all quizzes are bad.
The most helpful kind of quiz is the one that is the least time-consuming.
Quizzes prevent students from losing focus.
Quizzing students on material as they learn could be a great way to grab their attention. Quizzing students also helps their comprehension levels and helps them retain information better.
Quizzes give the teacher an idea of how well the class grasps the concepts. Teachers can understand where students need help. After a quiz, students have a better idea of how well they grasp the material. This will (hopefully) motivate them to study more, and also help them divide their study time more effectively by focusing on the information that needs improvement.
A.Studying is more efficient after a quiz. |
B.There is a fear that quizzing students often will lead to anxiety. |
C.Quizzed students tend to outperform students who aren’t quizzed. |
D.They will get into the habit of reflecting on their learning independently. |
E.We all know what it’s like to be sitting in class and have our minds wander. |
F.Students who aren’t quizzed quickly forget content without this learning strategy. |
G.This is why quick and easy practice quizzes on recently taught content are the most beneficial. |
8 . Cannes(戛纳)is a place that offers lots of different ways to spoil yourself. During the Cannes Film Festival in May, nothing changes, except that there are more people doing this, and that they talk about film. Here’s a guide to what you should do during the festival, both film-related and not.
Hotel Intercontinental Carlton
The film festival is a busy time for Cannes. The best way to appreciate the crowds might be having a dinner on a terrace(露天平台). Head to the Hotel Intercontinental Carlton and wander the lobby to take it all in. If you’re lucky you might be able to secure a table in the restaurant. Dress to impress or you won’t stand a chance of getting in.
Cinema de la Plage
Throughout the Cannes Film Festival, one of the best places to soak up some of the wonderful atmosphere is the open-air Cinema de la Plage at Mace beach. If you haven’t secured a ticket in advance for a seat, there’s no need to worry. You can spread a blanket out on the ground, open up your pre-prepared picnic, and enjoy the movie.
Marché Forville
The Marché Forville is a must-see for any visitor to Cannes and a foodie
La Croisette
La Croisette is the most famous walk in Cannes and is listed under the cultural inventory of France itself. Stroll the whole length, stop for a coffee, and end your walk by sitting on one of the free blue chairs along the way while taking in the view. It is also a great place to admire Cannes’ sculptures.

10 . If you are shopping in any toy store, you can easily find the different games and toys for boys and girls: There are a lot of pink toys on one side of the store for girls and dark-colored toy cars, toy guns, and toy soldiers for boys. Some big stores with toys may even have a pink floor for girls and a blue floor for boys.
Some people think that too much pink is bad for girls. Sue Palmer, the writer of Toxic Childhood, is very worried that most girls over the age of three are crazy about the color. This may happen for two reasons. Firstly, most companies offer too many products in pink.
