“Brrrrr—boppppp!” Ricky sat at the kitchen table, imitating the drumbeat of his favorite song as he finished his math homework. His pencil moved in time to the percussive (打击乐的) rhythms booming from his earbuds.

Grandma Johnson came into the kitchen just as Ricky was putting his math notebook back into his backpack.

“I don’t know how you get anything done listening to that hippity-hoppity noise,”she exclaimed.

Ricky took out his earbuds and fought hard not to roll his eyes. He knew Grandma Johnson was half-teasing. But the hip-hop rhythms relaxed his mind and quietened his thoughts, allowing his brain to focus on the page.

“Guess what, Grandma?” said Ricky. “I’ve finished my homework.”

Without his earbuds, Ricky could hear the music playing in the background — a song by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Pushing aside his annoyance, he took his grandmother’s hand and gave her a little twirl (旋转). Ricky has always felt close to his grandma. And now that his high school was near his grandmother’s Brooklyn home, he went there every day to eat dinner and do his homework before heading home to Harlem. Ricky knew his presence helped ease his grandmother’s loneliness, and he loved spending time with her. But… he just wished she would stop dismissing his favorite music as noise.

That evening, Grandma surprised Ricky with tickets to a Stevie Wonder concert at Madison Square Garden. Ricky was secretly disappointed, as he believed the concert would be boring compared to the hip-hop concerts he had attended. However, he smiled and thanked his grandmother for the gift. At dinner, Grandma Johnson took out her old photo albums and told Ricky stories about her past experiences at music festival s and concerts, including a Stevie Wonder concert in 1972. “This is not just music,” Grandma told him. “This is Black History, Black Culture. Blind as he is, he is a great musician.” But a Stevie Wonder concert today —an old guy on stage, playing a keyboard and singing? No dancers? No special effects? How boring!

Paragraph 1

The day of the concert arrived.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,文章主要探讨了忌妒的普遍性并给出了处理这种情绪的建议。

3 . The feeling of envy (忌妒) strikes at many moments these days: When a friend buys a house, or when a neighbor shares good news about their successful side project while you’re caught by sky-high debts, and when a co-worker gets a new job while your career has no progress.

“It’s normal to feel envious. After all, envy is a universal emotion, and we don't have to feel ashamed by it,” psychologists (心理学家) say. In fact, psychologists suggest trying a powerful method and analyzing our envy to get clues about what we really want out of life. Doing so can help us figure out next steps in our careers and personal lives.

“Two distinct types of envy exist. Malicious (怀有恶意的) envy arrives with anger, annoyance and a sense of wanting to take an advantage away from another person,” says Jan Crusius, psychologist and professor of motivation and emotion at University of Greifswald in Germany. Benign (良性的) envy, on the other hand, is when you wish you were in someone else’s position but don’t feel like tearing them down. That envy can inspire self-reflection and the motivation to set new goals. Research from Crusius has shown that marathon runners who were to experience benign envy also set higher goals for themselves, and tended to run faster in their races.

Rather than bottle up envy when it occurs, start by asking who inspires a mix of admiration and envy in your life. If they’ve achieved a particular milestone, investigate why you’re drawn to that achievement. The answer may point you on a more fulfilling path. Changing your thoughts helps you view someone as a model to catch up rather than an opponent (对手) to defeat, and helps you focus on what you can control.

1. How did the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By showing a definition.B.By telling a story.
C.By giving examples.D.By listing a series of findings.
2. What can benign envy bring us?
A.Improvement.B.Anger.C.Happiness.D.Gratitude.
3. What should we do to deal with envy according to paragraph 4?
A.Set a goal for ourselves.B.Defeat our opponent.
C.Just let it be.D.Bottle up our envy.
4. Where can this text be read?
A.In a news report.B.In a psychological magazine.
C.In a book review.D.In a novel.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Although it’s been almost two years now, I can still remember that day as if it were yesterday. We were all glued in front of the television, when Dad came rushing into the house after work to tell us that he had just bought a new boat. He promised us that the following week he’d take us all on a fishing trip. We were all very excited and happy at the prospect of it.

The much-awaited day finally came. After we packed everything onto the boat, Dad started the engine and steered it slowly out of the harbour. We headed out until we were a good distance from the shore. Then, when we found what seemed like a good spot for fishing, Dad stopped the engine.

The sky was crystal clear and the sea was as calm as a sheet of glass. We spent a good couple of hours bathing in the sun, fishing rods in hands, without a care in the world. It was fantastic just being there, staring out at the beautiful blue sea. We caught a good number of fish.

We must have lost track of time, chatting and laughing, because the next thing I remembered was being put into a darkness which was so thick that one could almost cut it with a knife. Looking around, it was all pitch-black. Then, out of nowhere, a big wave came crushing into the boat, nearly overturning us all overboard. If that wasn’t bad enough, we could hear the rumbling (隆隆声) of thunder in the distance—it was unbelievable how the weather had changed so quickly before our very own eyes. The storm was rolling up on us fast and it wasn’t long before the rain started to come down in showers. The rain was so dense and heavy that we could barely breathe.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要解释了运动后体重增加的原因。

6 . If you’ve ever started an exercise with good faith and enthusiasm, only to be met with disappointment as the scale goes past the weight you started with, you may have had a question: Why does exercise make me gain weight?     1     Any post-workout weight gain is most likely the combination of a few factors.

While exercise plays a role in weight control, the other side of the coin is food intake.     2     At this time it’s worthwhile to review the quantity and quality of the food you’re eating. Their post-exercise weight gain could be explained by what and how much you’re eating.

3     If you’re not used to a good workout and then exercise a lot, you could end up making your muscle fibers suffer microtears (微撕裂). It’s the reason why your muscles ache the next day, but over time it leads to muscle growth. However, these microtears can cause swelling (肿胀).     4     In effect, this increased water can be another explanation for after-exercise weight gain.

The other potential explanation comes down to the amount of blood. When you do aerobic exercise, there may be an increase in blood volume, which is essentially an increase in aerobic capacity. Aerobic capacity is a measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen your body can consume while exercising. Muscles need oxygen supplied by blood.     5

What all of this means is that people who have started to work out properly shouldn’t be discouraged from continuing, even if they gain a little weight.

A.You should do exercise.
B.The answer is many-sided.
C.A person notices his weight increasing.
D.When they eat pizza, they’re eating slowly.
E.This in turn leads to extra water staying in the body.
F.There are a few other biological reasons for the weight gain.
G.So the more oxygen a person can consume, the better their strength.

文章大意:本文是说明文。音乐可以使患有老年痴呆的人唤起过去的记忆,并重新联系当下。文章主要介绍了音乐对患有老年痴呆症的人很重要。

7 . An orchestra is attempting to bring people living with dementia (痴呆) back into the present. The work being done by Manchester Camerata has never been more important, given that there are about 900,000 people with the condition in the UK, a number that is predicted to nearly double by 2040.

People with dementia often find listening to music can reignite old memories from long ago. Much more overlooked, though, is the impact that making music can have on the present. While some with dementia can often feel trapped in the past, some researchers believe the act of creating music—as well as listening to it—can help to reconnect then to the here and now.

A new BBC documentary—Dementia, Music and Us—follows the work of Manchester Camerata and its principal flautist (长笛手) Amina Hussain. who, also a professional music therapist, leads classes across the north-west of England that have been described as life-changing. Classes for the community consist of improvisation (即兴创作), singing, and writing their own music.

Keith, 62, was diagnosed with dementia when he was 53. Like many, he really struggled to come to terms with his new reality. He found the sessions to be genuinely life-changing. “I think the thing that saved us was the first ever music group we went to because from that group it opened other groups up for us.” he said. “The workshops make you smile, enjoy life and it just brings the best out of you.”

Researcher Dr Dowlen is seeking to better understand the “in the moment” benefits of music-making for people with dementia. She believes the improvisational music workshop experience allows people to “create something that is held now in the moment.” She added, “Improvisational music-making is particularly important for people with dementia, especially when it comes to building their confidence and their self-esteem.”

1. Why is the work being done by Manchester Camerata important?
A.Music is an important part of daily life.B.Music is an effective cure for dementia.
C.More people are pursuing a musical career.D.A growing number of people live with denentia.
2. What does the underlined word “reignite” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Keep alive.B.Bring back.C.Push away.D.Take up.
3. How have the workshops affected Keith?
A.He has become more socially active.B.He has adapted to life with dementia.
C.He has demonstrated his music talent.D.He has recovered his long-lost memory.
4. What can we learn about the workshops from Dr Dowlen?
A.They bring mixed results,B.They enjoy great popularity.
C.They promote people’s welfare.D.They need to focus on the moment.

John and Nancy were left with their grandmother Linda after their mom was hospitalized for illness. They were curious about when they could finally see their mom.

“The hospital won’t allow her to leave until all of her medical bills are settled. I have given your mom all I could, but there’s still a large amount that we need to pay off,” Linda explained. John and Nancy missed their mom a lot and wanted her to come back home as soon as possible.

“What if we put up a lemonade stand (摊位), John?” Nancy asked her older brother.

“We can pick the lemons from the garden and make fresh juice out of them,” she suggested. Her brother smiled, “That’s a great idea, Nancy!” From then on, John and Nancy stayed outside the entire afternoon after school selling lemonade. A week went by, they only managed to earn ten dollars.

On Saturday morning, they sat on the side of the yard, looking worried. After a couple of seconds, their silent pondering (沉思) was interrupted by loud police sirens. “Hey, fellas!” one of the policemen greeted. “My colleague Jacob said that his neighbor had a lemonade stand in front of their yard.” The two children nodded. “I’m sorry, officer. But I didn’t think there would be anything wrong with that. Besides, we didn’t earn a lot,” John tried to explain.

“Don’t worry. You’re not in trouble. I bought a cup of it from you two the other day, remember? I asked why you were selling lemonade, and you told me it was to raise funds to get your mom out of the hospital,” Jacob interrupted upon seeing John and Nancy looked nervous.

“I told my friends over here, and we decided we wanted to help. Come to the back of the police car, and we have something to show you,” Jacob told the kids. They slowly made their way to the back of one of the police cars and saw a nicely-painted wooden lemonade stand. “That’s beautiful!” Nancy said in surprise.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I like staying overnight at my Gramma’s house — that is, until Gramma starts telling me how wonderful my cousin Maya is. Then it’s Maya this and Maya that until I don’t ever want to hear another word about her.

That’s why I wasn’t too excited when Gramma called me on the phone to “come on over and bring your pajamas.” When I got there, it was worse than I’d expected. There, in Grandpa’s big leather rocker, sat Maya, all dressed up and formal-looking and wearing fancy shoes as if she’d just been to a party.

“Surprise, Kristen!” Gramma said. “Your cousin Maya and her parents have traveled in from the East Coast on business. Maya gets to stay with us this afternoon.” Gramma chattered away about how excited she’d been for this surprise get-together, and how cousins ought to get to know each other better.

I hung my baseball cap in the closet and set my backpack by the stairway, all the time smiling and nodding as if I’d been waiting forever for this chance to spend an afternoon with Maya. Grandpa’s chair squawked (咯咯叫) as Maya rocked back and forth. It’s the chair I like best in the house, the one I usually sit in. I sat down on the sofa across from her.

Shortly, Gramma went off to the kitchen to “see about some lunch,” she’d said. That left me stuck in the living room with rocking Maya.

She was still small but taller than I’d remembered her from her last visit four years ago. She was good at small talk, though, and was chatting away about how nice it was to see me again. But I could tell that she didn’t really think so. The last time she was here, we’d had hours of fun together building caves out of Gramma’s sofa pillows.

After that, I’d heard about her only through Gramma’s tales. Maya taking piano lessons. Maya learning math. Maya, Maya, Maya. Now Maya was here, looking great with the latest haircut and a fancy dress.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了一个成像光谱仪旨在帮助科学家了解大气中的尘埃的影响,却意外地发现了50多个甲烷“超级排放者”。

10 . A space instrument, designed to map the existence of dust in the atmosphere and help scientists know whether the dust in different parts of the world is likely to trap the heat from the sun or make it change direction, has also shown another vital function: detecting worldwide emission of methane(甲烷排放), which is a powerful greenhouse gas.

The instrument is called the imaging spectrometer(成像光谱仪). It has identified more than 50 methane “super-emitters” in areas including the Middle East and the southwestern United States. The newly measured methane hot spots include large oil and gas centers and places where rubbish is buried.

The observations came as scientists tested the ability of the instrument. Over its task, measurements of surface minerals in dry regions of Africa, Asia, North and South America, and Australia will be collected. The data will be useful for scientists to know if the dust has a warming or cooling effect on the planet. “We have been eager to see how our mineral data will improve climate modeling,” said Kate Calvin, a scientist and senior climate advisor. “This additional methane-detecting ability offers an opportunity to measure and monitor greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.”

From the space station, the instrument can study large areas many kilometers wide while also centering on small areas the size of a football field. “Some of the plumes(烟雾) the instrument detected are the largest among what we have ever seen—unlike anything that has ever been observed from space,” said Andrew Thorpe, a research technologist.

New images of methane super-emitters include a group of 12 plumes from oil and gas structures in Turkmenistan. Some plumes are more than 32 kilometers wide. Scientists calculate the plume areas all together give off methane nearly at a rate of 50,400 kilograms per hour. This is close to the top emission rate of the gas leak in Aliso Canyon near Los Angeles. That event was the largest accidental methane leak in American history.

1. What was the initial purpose of the imaging spectrometer?
A.To identify methane super-emitters.B.To measure the level of methane in the air.
C.To monitor the emission of greenhouse gases.D.To help study the effects of dust in the atmosphere.
2. What does Kate Calvin think of the accidental observations?
A.They’re useful for climate change study.B.They will assist in building climate models.
C.They confirm the scientists’ prediction.D.They set the direction for dust research.
3. How does the author show the methane emissions in Turkmenistan?
A.By describing facts and conducting tests.B.By giving examples and explaining reasons.
C.By listing figures and making comparisons.D.By referring to other studies and analyzing data.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Instrument Mapping the Dust in the Atmosphere
B.Big Methane Emitters Spotted by a Dust Detector
C.Turkmenistan Being a Main Emitter of Methane
D.Major Sources of Methane Emissions Identified
