1 . New research into a little-known text written in ancient Greek shows that “stressed poetry”, the ancestor of all modern poetry and song, was already in use in the 2nd century CE, 300 years earlier than previously thought. It has been found sculpted on twenty precious stones and as a graffito (雕画) in Cartagena, Spain.
In its shortest version, the nameless four-line poem reads “They say what they like; let them say it; I dont care.” Other versions extend with “Go on, love me; it does you good.” The poem, unparalleled (绝无仅有的) so far in the classical world, consists of lines of 4 syllables (音节), with a strong accent on the first and a weaker on the third. This allows it to come into the rhythms of numerous pop and rock songs. So it became popular across the eastern Roman Empire and survives.
By comparing all of the known examples for the first time, Cambridges Professor Tim Whitmarsh noticed that the poem used a different form of rhythm to that usually found in ancient Greek poetry. As well as showing signs of the long and short syllables characteristic of traditional “quantitative” poem, this text employed stressed and unstressed syllables. The new study, published in The Cambridge Classical Journal, also suggests that this poem could represent a “missing link” between the lost world of ancient Mediterranean oral poetry and song, and the more modern forms that we know today. A lot of popular poetry in ancient Greek takes a similar form to traditional high poetics. This poem, on the other hand, points to a distinct and rich culture, primarily oral.

I was a shy 13-year-old boy that year, afraid to speak before people and poor at communicating with others. My parents were worried so they introduced a part-time job in a restaurant tome during the summer vacation, hoping it would make a difference to me. Although I hated it and didn’t believe it would bring any change to me, I had to accept it. The part-time job fell on Monday of each week.
On the first Monday, I simply dared not look at people in the restaurant. And when I was speaking with them, my face turned red and my voice was low. On my way back home, I felt so bad. But when I reached home, my bad feelings disappeared. I found my parents had brought home a pet cat, which I had expected to get for a long period of time. The cat was so lovely.
However, one Thursday, he secretly ran out and disappeared. We looked for him everywhere the whole day but found nothing. We lived in the city, close to a high-traffic road, and this cat didn’t have “street smarts”. I guessed he would probably die and wouldn’t be home again. And after three days of looking for the cat with no sign of him, I quite believed he wouldn’t be home again. My parents told me “A miracle (奇迹) may happen as long as you don’t give up.” However, I quite doubted it.
On the morning of the following Monday, I left for work 45 minutes earlier and started walking to the bus stop a block away. While waiting for the bus there, I thought about the work and felt upset. It wouldn’t be helpful to me and it was tiring! How much I wanted to quit the job! And thinking of the cat, I felt even worse.
Since it was still early, I suddenly wanted to spare some time to look for the cat again though I had little hope. I told myself, “If I still fail to find him this time, I won’t look for him again.” Then, I decided to walk to the next bus stop to look for him around. Minutes later, suddenly, a dirty and weak cat sitting by a tree caught my eye.

5 . Mindfulness—a focus on the here and now through awareness of the present moment—can be both practiced and, importantly, measured by simply counting your breath, according to new studies led by University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers.
The practice of mindfulness has recently gained popularity in the US. Studies show it can reduce stress, improve student academic performance, and more. But researchers have lacked a scientifically rigorous(严谨的)way to measure it, sometimes influencing its credibility, says study leader Richard Davidson.
To measure mindfulness precisely, participants in the study were asked to keep track of nine breaths in sequence by striking one computer key at each breath and a different key on the ninth breath in each sequence. To do so accurately, a person must be aware of each breath as it happens.
While others—including new hands and long-term meditators(冥想者)—were trained in a distraction task where they were paid to correctly identify a colored object on a screen, followed by a test where they were asked to identify different colored objects. During the test, the subjects were no longer paid, but they were “distracted” with the presence of the original colored object.
The findings show that mindfulness as measured through breath counting is associated with more self-awareness, less mind wandering and distraction caused by financial temptation. Long-term meditators were better breath counters than new hands, and performed better in distraction tasks and participants trained in breath counting completed test tasks more accurately than those not trained in breath counting.
Davidson says that when people are off-count, they’re unaware of it roughly two-thirds of the time. “The cool thing is we are always breathing, so we can do this anytime, anywhere,” Davidson says. The researchers hope their findings will help push mindfulness into the mainstream. He wants to see more people using it as a tool to promote well-being and to engage in common conversation around mindfulness. He is hopeful this measure can help.

6 . Understanding The Metaverse
The metaverse is rapidly being described as the next frontier in the tech, business, and finance world. The idea gained popularity in July 2021, after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg renamed the company to Meta to reflect its growing focus on the metaverse. Today, everyone, from major corporations like Microsoft and Disney to creative startups, is struggling to enter the market that is predicted to reach over $780 billion by 2024.
In simplest terms, the metaverse is a fully immersive (沉浸式) virtual world that is like our real life.
Zuckerberg may have drawn the world’s attention to the metaverse, but the idea of a virtual world is not new.
However, experts believe the technologies need to improve greatly before that happens. The still heavy virtual reality headsets often cause motion sickness and are not ready for long time use. The amount of computing power required to house billions of people worldwide in a virtual universe also presents an issue.
The various Metaverse companies will also have different virtual worlds. They will have to standardize the technology so users can move seamlessly (无缝) between them.
A.But what exactly is the metaverse? |
B.The development of the metaverse still has a long way to go. |
C.However, a metaverse is not a specific type of technology. |
D.The metaverse industry will create jobs for hundreds and thousands of people. |

8 . At the United Nations COP27 climate conference in Egypt, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres claimed that the world is on a “highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator (油门)”. To keep temperature from rising 1. 5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels by 2100, we need to pull a stop on greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, we’d basically have to bring the runaway truck to a complete and immediate stop. Now is the time for us to pull back before it is too late.
The climate pledges (承诺) made by nations at last year’s COP26 conference felt like a positive step in the right direction, but there’s very little doubt that the average temperature rise on Earth will pass the 1. 5-degree mark in the coming decades. Can we limit this overshoot? And how might we do that?
A study, released Thursday in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change, tried to answer those questions by modeling 27 different emissions reduction pathways of varying ambition. It came to an unsurprising conclusion:Countries need to act by increasing the ambition of their climate pledges. And they need to act now.
The 1. 5-degree rise has long been seen as a critical mark in the fight against climate change. Since the signing of the Paris Agreement at COP21 seven years ago, scientists have studied how this level of warming above preindustrial temperatures would affect the Earth. The models they’ve built show we are likely to see more extreme weather events, in addition to glacial melt, sea level rise that threatens many low-lying Pacific nations and significant loss of biodiversity once temperatures push past an increase of 1.5 degrees.
Though the 1. 5-degree target is practically dead, the situation isn’t hopeless. Now more than ever, there’s reason to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting more ambitious goals. However, ambition alone is not enough. We also need action -— investing in renewables and technologies like carbon capture and rapidly transforming our energy systems.

10 . Habitat loss, hunting, logging and climate change have put many large species on the planet at risk. A new study has found that not only are larger plants and animals at higher risk of extinction, but their loss would fundamentally affect life on earth.
Results showed that the continued loss of large animals alone would lead to a 44% reduction in the total amount of wild animal biomass on the planet. It would also lead to a 92% reduction in soil fertility (肥沃), which supports the ability of the earth to grow plants and sustain life.
“This research shows there are fundamental scientific principles that explain why large animals and trees matter for the health and integrity of all life on Earth,” said lead author Brian Enquist. “Protecting large species does have an umbrella effect to protect the wider ecosystem.”
A key reason for these results lies with the transport of nutrients(养分). When large animals eat in one location and defecate(排便)in another, they transport nutrients, often moving them from nutrient-rich areas to other, less fertile parts of the land and oceans. Similarly, the largest trees are the most productive, and contain more nutrients and carbon.
“Ecosystems with larger trees and animals are also more productive and provide more vital ecological services,” Enquist said. “The largest banks and corporations in the economy are the most productive and have the most impact on the economy. If they failed, they would have a big negative impact on economy. It’s a similar principle with large species across ecosystems.”
Unfortunately, these large organisms are more likely to be harmed by human pressures and climate change and take longer to recover from shocks, making them endangered species.
The findings help to answer an ongoing debate about where to channel limited conservation resources. While some species such as the tiger or redwood tree have historically been most appealing and therefore effective at pulling in donations, some scientists worry that the focus on a certain species could be coming at the cost of protecting other, less well-loved species.
“Our findings instead point to the importance of policies that emphasize the promotion of all large trees and animals, as such policies will have a great impact on biodiversity and ecosystem processes,” Enquist said.
