2 . It’s difficult not to admire the talent of a skilled musician. Whether it is a pianist, violinist or cellist, they have made great efforts to reach the highest levels of performance. But they say it’s never too late to learn. So what are the benefits, for both children and adults, in learning a musical instrument?
Learning to play a musical instrument when growing up can improve hearing in adulthood. According to a study by Dr Nina Kraus, Professor of Neurobiology at Northwestern University in Illinois, US, children who played musical instruments were better at recognizing different frequencies (频率). This improved hearing skill carried over into later life with adults who had once played an instrument able to recognize sounds of different pitches (音高) more easily.
And it could also have some academic benefits too. A study conducted by the University of British Columbia found that students who took part in music-related activities during grades 7-12 scored much higher in science, English and maths.
In addition, there are benefits for adults as well. Whether you choose to play the piano, pick a guitar or learn a drumbeat, you could end up joining a band. This in turn could improve your social life, meeting other bandmates who are likeminded in their love of music.
So, whether you’re looking to improve your grades or your social life, maybe taking up an instrument could help you.

How to improve your study skills
Studying is a skill you can improve, just like any other. Set yourself up for success by taking the following steps. You’ll find a few that work great for you.
Studies have shown that working on more than one assignment (任务) at the same time is not only ineffective; it’s also stressful. You can get much more enjoyment out of a task if you focus on it and do a good job, and then move on to the next thing.
Stay organized with a study schedule
Keep a detailed planner listing all your tests and assignments. For each day, write down your task you have to finish and check off each item as you complete it. You feel accomplished!
After an hour of sitting and studying, get up and take a little break. Try to make the break last about 10 minutes so that you can go back to studying. Your brain and body need a little activity and fun so that you are able to focus again.
Join or form a study group
If you have a big test coming up, get together a group of friends from your class to quiz each other and ask each other questions. Group study can be much more fun than individual study.
If you have difficulty studying for an exam, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can ask for help from a friend who’s taking the same class as you, or ask the teacher during class.
A. Take notes in classB. Study one subject at a time
C. Ask for help if you have trouble
D. Take an active break at least every hour
Going for a trip? Whatever destination you plan on, we have the information you need here.
Best for geological wonders: Gros Morne
Newfoundland and Labrador is one of Canada’s provinces. On its west coast is UNESCO-listed Gros Morne National Park, which is well-known for an ancient treasure — the Tablelands, one of only a few places in the world you can walk on the earth’s mantle (地幔).
Best for soft adventure: Thousand Islands
One of Canada’s smallest national parks, Ontario’s Thousand Islands is located in a region (区域) of the same name, and made up of many small islands in the St. Lawrence River. Formed from the worn-down peaks of ancient mountains, much of it is open for camping.
Best for a national park trip: Banff
Canada’s first national park, Banff sits in the palm of the snow-dusted Rocky Mountains and has drawn travellers to its natural hot springs since it first opened in 1885. The action here centres around the skiing town of Banff, but the mountains are home to wildlife such as moose and grizzly bears.
Best for wildlife: Jasper
Banff’s northern, lesser-visited neighbor, Jasper, is double its size and the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies. A hiker’s region of wild peaks, it’s hard not to come across wildlife here. Time your visit for spring or autumn when wildlife-watching is most suitable.

8 . 14-year-old Leanne Fan from San Diego, California, was named the grand prize winner of the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s top middle school science competition.
Leanne Fan developed the Finsen Headphones, a low-cost headphone device that uses machine learning and blue light therapy (疗法) to detect and treat mid-ear infections (感染) in children — potentially preventing up to 60% of hearing loss in children. The world sees 700 million cases of mid-ear infections every year. Fan hopes that this can be an effective and low-cost treatment option for the thousands who are affected.
Fan was inspired to create the headphones three years ago while learning about Niels Finsen, who won the Nobel Prize in 1903 after inventing light therapy to treat bacterial (细菌的) infections. “I thought, ‘This is an amazing idea, and I can apply it to something else in my daily life,’” Fan said.
Fan took home the top prize, earning the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” and $25,000. She is planning to use some of the prize money to start the patent process for the headphones. Fan is optimistic that the Finsen Headphones will be able to help people in the near future.
“Being part of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge was absolutely the best part of my year,” Fan said. “I could meet scientists that are my age and going for their dreams too, and made some friends.” She hopes to inspire other girls who want to become inventors. “Even a small idea can go far,” she said. “I had an idea to use blue light to kill bacteria and three years later, I’m here.”

10 . “Stove-boiled tea,” a way of drinking tea, has a strong sense of ritual and the ceremony has become a new favorite. People sit around a charcoal-filled stove, chatting, enjoying desserts, boiling tea while roasting snacks. Sounds great, doesn’t it? But how to roast (烤) snacks? Which ones are suitable? Save this guide and read on!
Niangao
Roasting time: 13-18 minutes
Niangao, or sticky rice cake, is one of the most popular snacks with the stove-boiled tea. Roasted niangao becomes soft and sweet. After it is roasted, you can enjoy it with condiments (调味品) such as brown sugar, white sugar or honey.
Oranges
Roasting time: 3-6 minutes
Roasting oranges is unique. With the rising temperature in the stove, the special smell of orange peel will slowly fill the air, making you feel relaxed. When roasting oranges, make sure they are heated evenly, so that they taste like warm orange juice.
Peanuts
Roasting time: 8-12 minutes
The peanut is a snack that will keep both your hands and mouth busy by shelling and eating. When roasting peanuts, one way to go is to make small cracks on their pods first, and remember to flip (翻面) peanuts to prevent charring (糊).
Chinese Dates
Roasting time: 8-12 minutes
The softness, aroma and sweetness of the Chinese date become even more pronounced after heating. To roast, you could skewer several Chinese dates together, which makes it easier to rotate them at the same time.
After preparing all the snacks, here comes the central figure — tea. Common tea choices include rock tea, aged white tea, Pu’er and black tea. However, if you are up for trying new things, how about fruit tea, flower tea, ginger tea, etc. based on your personal taste preference.
Enjoying boiling tea and roasted snacks on the stove is an interesting lifestyle. In this way, people can get a taste of a slower life and feel more relaxed. But when sitting around a stove and boiling tea, please ensure ventilation (通风), beware of fire and don’t get burnt.
