文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了人脸识别技术在学生食堂的使用,以及人们对这项技术使用的评价。

1 . Facial recognition software has found an unlikely new application: scanning the faces of thousands of British children in school canteens.

Nine schools in North Ayrshire will today start taking lunch payments by scanning the faces of pupils, claiming that the new system speeds up queues and is more secure than the card payments and fingerprint scanners they used previously. “It’s the fastest way of recognising someone at the till,” said David Swanston, the managing director of CRB Cunninghams, the company that installed the systems. “In a secondary school you have around a 25-minute period to serve potentially 1,000 pupils. So we need fast productivity at the point of sale.” He said the average transaction time was cut to five seconds per pupil.

However, privacy campaigners say there is little need to spread out facial recognition technology, which has been criticized for often operating without gaining approvals from the owners. Swanston argued that CRB Cunningham’s system, which uses cameras to check against coded face-print modes stored on servers at the schools, was different from live facial recognition systems that scan through crowds to identify faces. Live facial recognition has previously caused debate after being used by schools for security or to monitor attendance.

North Ayrshire committee said that 97 percent of children or their parents had given agreement for the new system. “Pupils often forget their PINs and unfortunately some have also been the victim of PIN cheating, so they are supportive of the planned developments and appreciate the benefits to them,” the council said.

But some parents said they were unsure whether their children had been given enough information to make their decision, and suggested that peer pressure had also played a role.

1. What can we infer from Swanston’s word?
A.He speaks highly of the system.
B.The software is intended to promote the sales.
C.The technology has previously caused debate.
D.The system will be helpful when the students forget their PINs.
2. What is not the advantage of the facial recognition software?
A.It speeds up the queues.
B.It is safer than the previous payments.
C.It operates without being approved of.
D.It benefits the pupils who often forget their PINs.
3. What’s the author’s attitude to the application of facial recognition technology?
A.SupportiveB.Disapproved
C.ObjectiveD.Critical
4. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.Facial recognition has been the best way adopted so far.
B.Parents disagree with the application of facial recognition system.
C.The facial recognition system can benefit the pupils who are forgetful.
D.Schools speed up canteen queues with facial recognition technology.

A New Addition to the Family

For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.

However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.

Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.

Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

3 . Hundreds of friends on Facebook can’t replace a handful of close friends in real life, a study has found. In a recent study, researchers discovered that people with only a few friends were at least as happy as those with far more if many of theirs were online.

Social media, the researchers said, has encouraged younger people to have larger but more impersonal networks of “friends”. But instead of trying to amass friends, they added, a better cure for loneliness might be spending time with those you’re closest to.

Scientists from the University of Leeds did their study using data from two online surveys on 1,496 people by a non-profit research organization. People taking part in the study showed their ages, the make-up of their social networks, how often they had different types of social interactions, and their own feelings of well-being. They included details of how often and how they interacted (交流) with families or neighbors, and whether they included people who provided services to them in their networks.

The number of close friends someone had appeared to be the only thing which influenced how satisfied they were with their social life.

“Loneliness has less to do with the number of friends you have, and more to do with how you feel about your friends,” said Dr Wändi Bruine de Bruin. Actually, it's often the younger adults who admit to having a bad opinion of their friends.

If you feel lonely, it may be more helpful to make a positive connection with a friend than to try and seek out new people to meet.

One Saturday afternoon, Li Hua and Wang Ping were having an environmental protection activity in the woods while they caught sight of a bird on the ground. They picked it up and found it wounding. Thinking it might dies without timely help, they took it home. They made a nest for it and feed it with rice and water. It was with their treatment that the lucky bird gradual got recovered. When time came for it to fly the bird back to the woods, they felt a little pitiful but very delighted. In my opinions, their good deeds deserve more praise. Here I call on public to show respect for nature. Only in changing the way we treat the environment can we get along well with it.

5 . Microplastics are tiny bits or threads of plastic, often too small to be seen. In recent years, microplastics have been found almost everywhere, from the North pole to Antarctica, from the top of Mount Qomolangma to the deepest point in the sea.

In a recent study led by a group called Ocean Wise, researchers made four trips across the Arctic Ocean. They took 71 samples from between 10 and 26 feet below the ocean’s surface, and 26 more samples from more than 0.6 miles below. They found microplastics in all but one, with an average of about 40 microplastic particles in every cubic meter. To identify the particles they found, the scientists used a tool based on infrared (红外的) light. Over 92% of the microplastics found were small threads, called microfibers. About 73% of these fibers were made of a plastic known as polyester(聚酯), which exactly matched polyester used in clothing.

The study also found far more microfibers near the Atlantic side of the Arctic Ocean than near the Pacific side. The fibers on the Atlantic side were also newer. The team believes this suggests that the fibers come from Europe and North America. Peter Ross, who led the research, said, “With these polyester fibers, we’ve created a cloud throughout the world’s oceans.”

Most samples were taken from an ocean layer where lots of sea life finds food. The scientists believe this means that many kinds of sea life, from the smallest to the largest, are likely to be affected by the pollution.

So how do these microfibers get into the sea? They break off when clothes are washed and emptied by washing machines into underground pipes. One recent study suggested that laundry from the US and Canada carries around 7,716,000 pounds of plastic microfibers into the sea every year.

1. Which is true about the study according to paragraph 2?
A.All the samples taken contained microplastics.
B.Polyester accounted for most of the microfibers.
C.The head of the research group is called Ocean Wise.
D.Most samples were collected from over 0.6 miles below.
2. What can we infer from Peter’s words?
A.These polyester fibers look like clouds.
B.The world’s oceans are linked together.
C.The pollution has reached a serious level.
D.The food chain of the sea has been damaged.
3. Which one might be the source of the microfibers?
A.Plastics.B.Ocean layers.
C.Washing machines.D.Laundry.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Efforts Made to Protect the Arctic Ocean
B.Reduction in the Consumption of Plastic Products
C.Microplastics Found All Through the Arctic Ocean
D.Reasons Behind the Pollution of the Arctic Ocean

9 . Yesterday, a salesman called me by phone, on behalf of a telecom company, to sell his phone plans. I was at work and I usually didn't like telemarketing (电话销售), so I excused myself that I couldn't talk yet and said he could call me back one hour later, at 6:00 pm.

That's what he did. So we talked for 15 minutes. He explained to me his different phone plans, which he stated to be better than my current one. While listening to him, sometimes I was lost in my thoughts and I gave several “hmm hmm” as a sign of agreement to convince him that I was still there. Sometimes, I felt a bit impatient, especially as he had difficulty in correctly talking in French. But I stayed calm and polite until the end of the discussion.

At the end of the conversation, he revealed (袒露) the following to me:“Thank you, Linda. You are the first person in a long time with whom I had an enjoyable conversation. Usually, people shout at us, speak to us rudely, and treat us as thieves. Today, since 10:00 am, I hadn't had a conversation without an offense. I know you had a long day at work and you could have relaxed in front of your TV. Instead, you listened carefully to me. I sincerely thank you. I wanted to tell it to you.”

I thanked him for this revelation. I realized how much he could have been the subject of verbal violence, all through his working days. Unfortunately, the telephone enables the customers to have such aggressive behavior. Indeed, physical barriers do not exist in this situation and a kind of dehumanization (非人性化) seems to happen. I am also conscious that those people getting impatient could have been me. Yet, he was only doing his job and he shouldn't have suffered from the violence.

1. Why did the author let the salesman call back later?
A.She meant to refuse him at once.
B.She showed interest in his phone plans.
C.She hoped for more about telemarketing.
D.She wanted to use the way to discourage him.
2. How can we describe the author during the 15-minute talk?
A.Patient.B.Careful. .
C.Kind of absent-minded.D.Obviously impolite.
3. What did the salesman intend to express in Paragraph 3?
A.His deep apology.B.His true appreciation.
C.His anger at misunderstanding.D.His sufferings in telemarketing.
4. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.People say unkind words to him.B.There are physical barriers.
C.Salesmen's impatience.D.Customers' Humanization.

10 . In October, 2019, Beijing Daily warned the youth that they shouldn't let Internet slang (俚语) deepen the generation gap(代沟),after People Daily started a discussion on Chinese microblog Weibo on how to "explain" the youth's Internet slang terms to parents. The post got 40,000 likes. People were commenting that they couldn't keep up with the rapidly developing Internet lingo (术语)in China.

People also fear that Chinese Internet slang will negatively influence broader linguistic (语言的) trends of Mandarin Chinese, in particular, the gradual taking over of pinyin, the romanization of traditional Chinese characters using the Western alphabet. As pinyin gets widely used when people text or write on mobile phones or computers, while less and less people write characters by hand, people gradually forget how to write them, which is called "character amnesia" in China.

2019s latest slang terms add a further simplification: the use of pinyin acronyms. "Awsl"   in pinyin, for instance, means Ah, wo si le (Oh, I'm gonna die), and is used if something is too cute or adorable. "Nsdd" stands for ni shuo de dui (you're right).

Certainly, as an age-old written language, Chinese has been evolving and developing over the years. But the Chinese Internet lingo is unlikely to replace the existing use of Mandarin Chinese, but will rather be enriching it by adding another layer.

Acronyms aren't new. They have appeared with the limited space available in early-generation cell phone messaging. Some of them have become a part of the English language, such as BTW (by the way) and LOL (laugh out loud), while others had a rather short lifetime. That's likely to be what's going to happen with China's Internet slang terms. Some are going to be old in a few weeks, while others might make it into mainstream use, and as they do, young net users are coming up with new slang words to differentiate themselves.

In China, using Internet slang means belonging to a certain generation that likes to watch the same talk shows, play the same games, etc., and therefore, creates unity. Older generations don't have to feel left out, and certainly don't have to fear a degradation (没落)of the Chinese language. While language development is unavoidable, Internet slang is not going to let 6,000 years of Chinese written language completely change overnight.

1. The public are worried about Chinese Internet slang abuse because
A.It's used by children to keep secrets from parents.
B.It can cause confusion even among young people.
C.It was invented in response to the limited messaging space.
D.It will rarely have a positive effect on linguistic trends of Chinese.
2. How do Chinese Internet slang terms affect the Chinese language?
A.They add variety to the language.
B.They are replacing its traditional vocabulary.
C.They make the language more global.
D.They only have temporary effects on Chinese.
3. By using Internet slang in China, people may get.
A.a sense of purpose
B.a sense of group identity
C.a sense of cultural pride
D.a sense of safety
4. Which could be the best title for the passage?
A.Is Media Helping Older Generation Understand Internet Slang?
B.Is Chinese Language Too Powerful to Be Largely Affected?
C.Is Mandarin Chinese Useful to Bridge the Generation Gap?
D.Is Internet Slang Deepening the Generation Gap, Ruining Chinese?
