1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel (吵架) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh and had to leave.

The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”

“Oh, yes, but I don’t have money on me.” she replied.

“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “Come in.”

The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.

“What is it?” asked the man kindly.

“Nothing. Actually, I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”

Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you remember the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”

Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock: she remembered her mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful. Why haven’t I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?”

On the way home. Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

文章大意:本文是新闻报道。报道了市长Andre Dickens致力于将亚特兰大打造成美国最适合养育家庭的地方。他提出2023年为青年年,关注年轻人,改善教育。各界积极参与,提供实习计划和免费活动。

2 . “My goal is that the City of Atlanta becomes the best place in the United States to raise a family,” says Mayor (市长) Andre Dickens about the capital of Georgia.

Dickens grew up in Atlanta. Recently, he was asked about his main goals for this city of nearly 500,000 people. His focus, he said, is on the youth. For that reason, he told the public officially 2023 is the Year of the Youth.

“Whatever we do, we have to think about young people,” Dickens said. “Atlanta’s young people are our future. Continuing to invest (投资) in future generations puts them on pathways to success that will help us move Atlanta forward together.”

Dickens said that after he put forward the idea of the Year of the Youth, businesses, nonprofits, and other community members all said, “I want to be in on that.”

Businesses offer summer internship (实习) programs. They allow students in Atlanta to get valuable experience in the workplace. Dickens explained that several businesses in the city even made their working environments suitable for young people to join in internships.

Improving education is another key goal. Schools and city leaders have been working together to make their partnership in the service of young people stronger. Toward this end, the city is working to improve educational opportunities, create safe ways to school, and offer after-school activities for free or at little cost.

Dickens also believes that it’s important to invest in early education. Investing in early education, he explained, means that more young people will be able to develop basic skills, stopping them from falling behind later in life.

Dickens is looking forward to positive results. “Everyone’s getting ready to serve the young people over the summer,” he said.

1. Why does Dickens invest in future generations?
A.To encourage the development of the city.
B.To draw more attention to young people.
C.To attract more youths to Atlanta.
D.To make Atlanta more famous.
2. Which of the following best describes the public’s opinion on the Year of the Youth?
A.Worried.B.Supportive.C.Doubtful.D.Uncaring.
3. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.The importance of internship for the youth.

C.How businesses help the youth.
D.Why businesses offer help.
4. What does the city government do to achieve positive results?

B.It cooperates with schools and businesses.
C.It asks more young people for their support.
D.It helps young people with personal problems.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是友谊的重要性以及如何保持友谊。
3 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Friends make up a huge part of most people’s lives, but over time, friendships can fade (褪色) unless they     1     (maintain) carefully. Putting effort into friendships is key to     2     (enable) them to stay strong.

Scientists have found that friendship plays a     3     (significant) important role in our mental (心理的) health. Spending time with friends can increase our feelings of well-being, make us happy,     4     improve our overall mental health.

There is no one way     5     (keep) friendships for good. In fact, not every friendship is meant to last forever, and sometimes it might pain us. “Being yourself” is one of the     6     (old) suggestions on making friends. To maintain strong friendships, you ought to try to be yourself so that you can exactly describe your needs and wants to someone else, giving them the opportunity to care for you in the best way.

Whoever your friends are, their actions are out     7     your control. They may not choose to work toward being the best self they can be.     8     only one you can control is yourself. Therefore, you may sometimes have to learn how to let those friendships go, or learn to put     9     (distant) between you and the other person if you often feel     10     (misunderstand) or disrespected by them. Not every friend has to be a close friend, just like not every friendship will last forever.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了研究人员发现用过的尿布可以代替沙子来制成混凝土,使用过的尿布也会造成的污染以及尿布代替沙子具体的操作过程。

4 . Concrete (混凝土) is one of the most common building materials in the world. It’s used to build many things, including roads, sidewalks, and buildings. But making concrete creates a lot of pollution. And it uses a lot of sand. Mining for sand creates other problems for the environment. Siswanti Zuraida from the University of Kitakyushu in Japan had an unusual idea. What if some of the sand in concrete could be replaced (代替)with used diapers (尿布)?

Diapers are a huge source of pollution. In the US alone, over 8 billion pounds(3.6 billion kilograms)of them are thrown away each year. In other countries, dirty diapers can end up in rivers and roads. One 2018 study in Indonesia showed that diapers made up more than 20% of the rubbish pulled from waterways in 15 cities.

So Ms Zuraida and her team collected used diapers, cleaned them up, and killed any bad germs (细菌) in them. Then the diapers were dried and cut into small pieces that could be added to concrete.

The team made different mixes of concrete with different numbers of diapers. They found that this new kind of concrete was just as safe and strong as normal concrete. The researchers think their idea could make it less exorbitant to build homes. After all, sand needs to be mined, which costs money. Used diapers are basically free, and there’s no shortage of them.

Ms Zuraida and her team are excited about their results. However, if diapers are really going to be used in concrete, someone will have to think about how to safely collect, clean, and store lots and lots of used diapers. The team is also studying how well diaper concrete is able to block out heat and sound. Perhaps the biggest challenge will be encouraging people to use concrete made with diapers.

1. Why does Zuraida advise replacing some of the sand with used diapers?
A.To lower costs of building houses.B.To improve the quality of concrete.
C.To invent a new building material.D.To reduce pollution caused by concrete.
2. What does the author want to tell us by listing numbers in paragraph 2?
A.The reason why diapers can replace sand.B.The researchers’ worry over used diapers.
C.The seriousness of diaper pollution.D.The solution for diaper pollution.
3. What does the underlined word “exorbitant” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Harmful.B.Expensive.C.Dangerous.D.Challenging.
4. What can we learn about using diapers as building materials in the last paragraph?
A.It is well received by the public.B.It has more benefits than thought.
C.It still faces many problems.D.It is impossible to become a reality.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要就如何处理人际关系中存在的问题给出一些建议。

8 . Everyone, at one time or another, has experienced some challenges in friendships and relationships with family members. We might find ourselves frustrated or angry with other people, or even find that we argue with them. The reality is that nobody is perfect and we need to realise that we should find ways to live happier and less stressful lives.     1

Respect other people and accept them.

This is the most important point. If we want to show someone we love them, we need to first respect who they are and show them we accept them for who they are.     2    By always remembering this, we will be able to develop and maintain strong relationships.

Be interested in others' interests.

3    Or perhaps a parent's hobby seems boring to us but it is something they love. If we want to keep our relationships strong and positive, we should at least take time to listen to them and talk about what matters to them. By doing this, we show them that we care about them and their interests.

    4

This is the hardest thing for most of us to do.     5    By being humble (谦逊的,卑微的) when you make a mistake, you can fix any problem you may have caused and also show that you are a mature person.

So, try and follow the advice and you will find that you have happier and stronger relationships with your friends and loved ones.

A.You can learn from mistakes.
B.Apologise when you make a mistake.
C.Show your friends what you really think.
D.Yet a simple “I'm sorry” can undo a lot of tension.
E.Everyone is unique with different experiences and lives.

9 . I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a standup comedian in 2003. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. I’ve always been a performer-I’ve worked as a singer, actor and musician-but all that came to an end after I found people around didn’t want to go out and entertain themselves.

It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realized people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.

In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. But by the time I tried my first joke , people were properly laughing. 1 was enchanted (陶醉) by the charm and power of comedy.

Now, 1 might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people, or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100. After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I am.

They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased 1 can show that as an old person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.

Last year, I was recognized as the oldest female standup comedian in the world. My friends think I’m mad. They don’t understand why I wouldn’t choose to take it easy. But I like engaging with the world and you’ve got to be in touch to be funny. I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100.My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored.

1. Why did the author want to be a comedian?
A.She was tired of her previous job.
B.She wanted to explore new territory.
C.She was interested in performing training.
D.She wanted to make people laugh.
2. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Humorous and humble.B.Brilliant and confident.
C.Determined and adventurous.D.Calm and cautious.
3. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph?
A.Her family doesn’t understand her.
B.She often feels bored in daily life.
C.She likes traveling around the world.
D.She will continue her comedy career.
4. Where can the text be found?

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了中国设计师如何从中国的丰富历史中寻找灵感来创造他们的现代服装,以及这种趋势对未来时尚界的影响。

10 . Chinese designers are setting themselves apart from the global competition today by turning to China’s rich history for inspiration to create their contemporary clothes.

Long before the invention of the qipao, there was a similar-looking type of clothing that most Chinese wore starting from as early as the 26th century BC. Known as hanfu, these traditional clothes featured loose lapels and long flowing sleeves. While the details changed through the centuries, the style of the hanfu has endured even till today, with a growing number of Chinese designers turning to it for inspiration and infusing (注入) elements of it into their contemporary designs.

“The old style is monotonous and makes people think of patterns featuring dragons and phoenixes. To make it appealing, we need to get rid of the original frame and be innovative,” said Cai Wenqiao, an integrated design undergraduate student.

For her final-year project, Cai designed eight pieces of clothing inspired by the Chinese prose called Peach Blossom Spring by Tao Yuanming. Cai used pink as the main color for all the pieces as it represents the peach blossom. She has also included classic hanfu elements such as embroidery (刺绣) featuring flowers and butterflies. Silk, a common material used to make hanfu, was also the choice material for the project.

“The combination of nostalgia (怀旧) and modern influences should set trends for some time to come. The fashion’s future is far from clear, but what is clear is that Chinese designers’ influence and Chinese heritage infusion are here to stay,” wrote Mike Bastin, senior lecturer at Southampton University.

1. What can we learn about hanfu from paragraph 2?
A.It develops from the similar-looking qipao.
B.It interests a large number of designers.
C.lt is characterized by simplicity and comfort.
D.It dates back hundreds of centuries.
2. What does the underlined word “monotonous” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.InspiringB.ConvenientC.BoringD.Expensive
3. What is Mike’s attitude toward the future of integrating Chinese elements into clothes?
A.DoubtfulB.PositiveC.CautiousD.Unclear
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.An Eight-year Project of a Chinese Designer
B.A Combination of Ancient and Modern Fashion
C.Differences Between Eastern and Western Cultures
D.Chinese Culture Fueling International Fashion Trends
